As someone who already knows English cursive, is actually kind of weird writing cursive in another language. It feels familiar, but also different enough to feel awkward.

I know this is an older video and others have left helpful comments, but in case anyone sees mine, I'd like to say I'm now learning Cyrillic after studying Latin script of course and also Arabic/Persian scripts, and one thing I've learned is that when it comes to handwriting, there are simply many ways of writing each letter. Each person will write each letter somewhat differently, but the important thing is to know the general template of each letter, and be able to distinguish each one from the others. Especially when the letters are similar, even between languages or scripts. In the case of Cyrillic, half of the challenge is simply remembering the differences in phonetics between Cyrillic and Latin, but within Cyrillic, some letters are very similar and could be written in different ways. It's important to practice and write what feels most natural for each letter, and try to create the appropriate variation between each. I recommend using a proper writing tool, like fountain pens, to practice and to enjoy the process of calligraphy. Then when it comes to writing for communication or further studying, you will feel much more confident, especially if your journey includes multiple languages.

I just finished my online Russian Language lesson today, I am into it going on 130 days, my pronunciation is well an epic fail, on the other hand, I surprised myself with being able to translate Russian into English without looking it up first. And picking the correct words that I hear. Not perfect I make mistakes, but I am 100% better at it than I was when I started. I might be up to the first grade come 2021 in speaking and writing skill. after all at 65, I am still young. Sometimes I am still an 8-year-old boy! I have been making a habit of watching one Russian Movie and to listen to some music every day. It's really a beautiful language.

I am on Day 7... I feel desperate even though it is obvious that every day I get better.. This is my Main Teacher (although her crappy handwriting has caused me grief) A good plan is to find 2-4 solid teachers and Cross Reference ... I have a digital alphabet downloaded with all Cyrillic letters and phoenetic pronunciation whicn I often check against Teachers handwriting and pronunciation.. Every day or so, I will try another site or app.. but I think it is best to stick with a single Main teacher... whoever that will be,

I write in cursive, but in my native language teachers always told me "I don't want you to write like that 'cause I can't understand" or "I won't accept any more jobs with that letter" (never changed my writing, though), so when I found out Russian is written in cursive it filled me with joy. 💛

The trickiest part of writing in cursive is connecting letters, without knowing how to connect them the right way, writing can turn into a total mess. Some letters have little tails to be connected with following letters, but others don't, so we should add those tails, without the proper connection "ам" can look like "аи". for instance.

I am Hungarian and learned Russian in my childhood. My Russian handwriting is much more beautiful than my original Hungarian. Nothing weird in any of the languages. What is shocking to me, is that now I am living in an English-speaking country, where people are not able to read handwriting, and I have to write in print style. Crazy.

It's very interesting. At school, learning Russian was compulsory in Hungary when I was a kid (in the 80-s, during the cold war). We learnt Russian cursive right from the beginning, alongside with grammar and vocabulary. I never forgot it, and when I restarted my Russian studies in my mid-30-s, cursive writing come back to me almost instantly. I must admit, it is still super difficult. Both writing and reading. And I also must admit that I cannot write in block letters in Russian at all.

After 20 videos, finally i find a Diane/Diana like here who states after half an hour "Nobody can judge me because i am a Russian" and this made fall in love with your open way of teaching. i even followed some lessons calligraphy in Bulgarian (in Sofia) with a Bulgarian friend as a Belgian guy who now is learning Russian and history about all slavic languages as well. i was very confused because we had very strict Latin 'prescriptions' and your D is indeed Deautiful like Biana! (haha) So now i can invent my own calligraphy in Russian and later on will publish this for free on Facebook to use or to invent your own script. i admit: Cyrillic is much more beautiful to write poems in than Dutch, but Flemish poems can be wonderful too. i live Bulgaria and now i love Russia too!!!! ❤️❤️💯💯💯 And you too! (it is platonic and i am 58 so do not worry and just consider it as a real compliment, but as a Russian woman... you know for sure, i have a wonderful Russian girl friend born in Krasnodar that moved 30 years ago for her child to Bulgaria as well in 'LOVEch', with beautiful written T's in her name (Tatjana). In calligraphic lessons in Sofia i learned that Latin script combines the letters all in words but basicly in cyrillic they 'space' all letters with a little room and do NOT connect them. However, i break that rule because even a Bulgarian painter said i had such beautiful cyrillic writing when combining it with the rules i learned in my Belgian country. But be careful: if you omit the endings before and after on the lower line, your 'l' and 'm' lose their functions and become other letters. So you always have to make some 'bows' below. i cannot post a picture but perhaps later, i will make a video when i write in Macedonian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian better with each some different styles and some other letters in each of them! But i feel devine with these very old scripts that find their origin at Kyril and Methodi in Bulgaria and in Ohrid, now North Macedonia (of course i visit all places there and in all slavinic countries since i arrived here in 2015 after 50 Belgian years... +je

a suggestion if i may add, when you try explaining to english speakers about writing the cursive small letter "з" and about going slightly below the line. Tell them that it's similar to how when writing cursive english that the small letter y goes slightly below the line. It may be a simpler way for them to grasp that aspect. Love the video by the way Russian and other slavic languages have always sounded so facinating to me
