Got 'em all right. The trick is 'ы' words have a more glottal sound (more tongue pressure on roof of mouth). 'и' words are pronounced with the tongue more forward (less contact with roof of mouth).

First time listening: I guessed a bit less than half correct. I am definitely going to have to listen to this a few more times to really hear the difference. Thank you for the chance to practice hearing the difference this way.

Coming back to this video after watching the rule of first И!! I didn't know that rule Kristina!! Love the way you explain things, very clear and precise, in a way that it's impossible to forget!! About the video the rule of first И. As I told you I didn't know that the pronunciation of и could change in such scenarios, but I had read somewhere that the pronunciation of И changes to Ы when it comes after the hard consonants Ш, Ж and Ц. For example, in машина. So I guess this is also a rule of reduction, right?
@BoostYourRussian
@BoostYourRussian 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you´re enjoying the training! In writing, ы is never used after ж, ш, щ, ч and only used after ц in several roots. In speech, ж, ш, ц are always hard (non-palatalized), while щ and ч are always soft (palatalized) in Russian. Hence, all differences in writing are purely etymological: there are no differences at all between the first syllables in цыпленок and цирк; жёлтый and Жора, and so on.

Many thanks for this, Kristina. Very difficult first time round. Then I started to try to get a clue from the preceding consonant. Hard before ы and soft before и. Am I correct about that?
@BoostYourRussian
@BoostYourRussian 5 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Strictly speaking, there are no hard or soft consonants. Almost every consonant can give both hard and soft sounds depending on which vowel follows. For example, hard л in ла and soft л in ли, hard м in мо and soft м in ме. Does it make sense?

I think key is how many did you "guess", because i could mostly only guess. As in most languages, context is the most important factor in understanding.
@BoostYourRussian
@BoostYourRussian 4 жыл бұрын
I guess you will have to mostly only guess if you haven´t practiced enough in order to distinguish one sound from the other. In this case, yes, it´s almost impossible to guess correctly without knowing the context
@YaShoom
@YaShoom Жыл бұрын
No, it was important here to catch the differences by ear in order to train your phonetic hearing, and not reset the recognition function to the context.

Distinguishing between и and ы after the sound "р" always gives me trouble. The one I misidentified was "рысь - рис", the very first example. Everything went fine after that. Even "время" and "в Риме" continually confuse me. [Add to that "рым" (which means "eye bolt") and the confusion is multiplied.] Thank goodness for context, and the infrequent mention of eye bolts in daily conversation. Somehow пары - пари caused no problem. Perhaps the sound being in the final position, and being stressed, helped. Это отличное упражнение для "тренировки" звука и голоса. Спасибо.

I hope you´ll get better at this over time! Though honestly, after all these years, I still can hardly distinguish a couple of English minimal pairs (bad / bed, sit / seat, etc.). Knowing the context is usually the only thing that helps me distinguish them
@bhami
@bhami 3 жыл бұрын
@@BoostYourRussian "bad" can vary in the US with regional accents. E.g. I grew up in suburban NY and say something like BEH-yud, sort of a diphthong, while a Midwesterner might use a more open, pure vowel, sort of BAAAAD.
@bhami
@bhami 3 жыл бұрын
And a similar example with almost the reverse variations is the word "horrible", which I (and President Trump, who is also from greater New York) pronounce HAH-ruh-bull (open pure A), but midwest or west coast might prefer to say WHORE-uh-bull (less open A, almost a diphthong). Bottom line, there aren't a lot of consistent rules, and everything is ultimately case-by-case idioms. 😮 And to expound further on "bad", in the deep South they might say something like BUY-yud, where the extreme diphthong almost becomes two syllables.

@BoostYourRussian

No, it doesn't change. It just sometimes we pronounce it clearer than other times. Oh I still don't hear the difference between this and these! Luckily, it's easy guess which is which from the context.

You can just make the i longer for the plural (that's approximately right) but the s changes to 'z'. I still can't hear the difference between ш and щ. Sometimes in your verbs explanation (and I offer this advice in all humility) the way you say 'model' sounds more like 'modal', which is another kettle of fish!
