This sound doesn't exist in spanish, but we have the interjection "uy", that sounds exactly "уи". This can be used for a nice surprise or pain at the same time. So if it's a surprise, you say "уиии". But if it's pain, you ocasionally close your mouth (because of the situation), and actually you say it as a long "ыыыы". Everybody listening to you will understand that you forgot your keys inside the house, or you didn't win the lottery for just one number, or something like that :) although the sound Ы is not used at all in spanish.

To clarify, these methods allow you to get a not very clear sound, although very close to the sound Ы. Ы and У are not related. In rapid speech, you may find a similar sound in the phrase 'We will going to drink whisky' = Wы wыll going to drink whыsky The main thing is not to make the consonant sound before Ы softer, otherwise you will get the sound И ('ee').

As I try to pronounce /bI/ correctly, I feel that pushing the tongue up and backwards is more like a move that prepares its coming forward again. It is like the winding of a spring in order to make it springy. So, the tongue goes back to be able to articulate the next phoneme or word in a more clear, vigorous and uniterrupted flowing manner. For instance in "A TbI KAK?" with the tongue back after TbI, we are ready to articulate KAK more clearly and emphatically. Is this the right approach?

"и" is never like "ы" or vice versa. Can you indeed give examples of songs and words in them where you think you hear "и" instead of "ы" ? I'm puzzled because changing "ы" to "и" usually completely changes the meaning like "мыло" (soap) becoming "мило" (nice), so we hear the difference very well.

Believe it or not, this sound somewhat exists in American (and possibly other variants of) English, and English speakers pronounce it all the time. It's pretty much the sound of the isolated "i" in the word "six". Just analyze carefully how Americans in particular pronounce the word "six" and it's probably the closest sound to the Russian "Ы". Stretch out the word "six" for a couple of seconds, accentuating the depth of the vowel by opening up the jaw, and this pretty much puts your mouth and tongue in the correct position to pronounce that letter. Change it by saying "six" but begin with a "T" sound and not an "S" sound. Then omit the "X" sound at the end completely, and you should have a much better pronunciation of the word for "you" in Russian than most of the complicated guides out there. Another exercise. Say the word "thin" or "this" with an American accent a couple of times, then start dropping the "TH" sound. Congratulations, you're 95% closer to pronouncing "Ы" properly. Source: I be Russian but became bilingual in English from a very early age, so I've tried to explain this sound before to English speakers on many occasions.
