It took three drones. Three drones at $500 each to destroy a million dollar piece of equipment. The cope cage may have helped some, but monetarily it is very cheaply destroyed.

Very salient point. But I wonder if Russia really can replace a destroyed tank for a million dollars. I could be wrong but I'm guessing that even the refurbishment of old tanks from storage costs more. (Advanced T-14 Armatas, built from scratch and made in very small production runs, cost an estimated $5m-$7.1m in 2022.)

Or they could be actual jammers. Just ones that are out of date. The Russians operate in a bureaucratic 'top down' manner so the jammers are made to a specific design. This design is then shipped out to the entire army. However, it - at best - takes several months from determination of the need to the equipment reaching the troops. The Ukrainians are innovative and decentralized. This means that they can create countermeasures to the Russian jammers and have then in the hands of the troops in a couple of weeks. So, the Russians will have brief windows where their jammers work then have to wait for the next iteration of jammers to be developed, manufactured and deployed.

There are multiple examples of how poorly these Soviet era tanks have been maintained while in mothballs and how little has been done to them before throwing them back into service. That they are using it at night to clear mines also speaks to the value they place on it. Also the seals only work if the hatches are secured. A mine clearing job likely isn't given to the best and brightest and they may also feel they may have to escape quickly in an emergency.

NO. It is a STUPID idea. It doesn't work. Not as a tank nor as a transport vehicle. It only "works" for someone who can throw away tanks, transporters and infantry in dozens if not in hundreds - while feeling out a stretch of road for mines. Meanwhile it sacrifices a whole tank - it is combat ineffective. Turret can't turn, it is slower AND it is a magnet for artillery, drones and any kind of infantry operated anti-tank weapon out there. FFS, you can DANCE UP TO IT IN PAJAMA AND SLIPPERS AND CHUCK A MOLOTOV AT IT - THEY CAN'T SHOOT AT YOU OUT OF THAT THING! The only reason it APPEARS to work is because Ukraine lacks shells and mines to cover the area currently on the attack. Notice we practically never see it clear a mine. It is COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE against something like a PARM mine or even a garden variety IED of the sort used in Iraq. Ukrainians aren't stupid. They know that. They simply didn't have the mines, artillery or time to cover the roads those ovens on tracks were "clearing". That is why they are not wasting time upwelding what tanks they have. They need them fast, agile and able to turn the fucking turret. NOT be used as meme fodder.

Those big cope cages are a variety of spaced armor with a lot more space than usual. Seems to be working against drones that hit it. The cage can't cover the lower tracks, and as of yet they haven't covered the forward view. I suspect that we'll see cages in the future that cover both. It also seems like we're seeing a pattern of strikes. First strike is inaccurate because the drone controls are jammed right before it hits. Second strike is more accurate, immobilizes the tank. Third strike can be accurate, prevents the tank from being recovered. Godspeed, Ukraine. I'm sorry we delayed.
