I've been meaning to make this video for a long time, and it's finally here! The machine is still working great, with a couple of minor (to me) issues that I discuss in the video.
It's still a very inexpensive solution for anyone who wants to add plasma to their home shop. Actually, it's even less expensive now than it was when I got it a couple of years ago.

For those of you who have one of these chinese plasma cutters...they work excellent, especially if you do some testing with feed rates and amperage settings as well as cut height. I recently purchased a hypertherm powermax 85 for my cnc plasma table. After learing how exact the set up needs to be I now better understand these cheaper chinese models. I have an all-in-one tig/arc/plasma that I now am much better at because of this process. My powermax 85 has a factory designed optimum cut height of .060 inches. That's really close! I measured the depth of the plus sign at the end of the chinese consumables tip. It seams to be about .080...so dragging the tip across the plate, like this video, does give the optimum cut height for this style torch. I was able to cut 10 guage at 50 amps moving along quickly with nearly any dross...just like my hypertherm. Hope this helps.

I paid $216 for mine with free shipping and am quite impressed so far. It handles 1/2" steel plate, but really not much more than that. The only annoyance is that the regulator leaks when turned up to 60-70psi. It's not the fittings, but something inside the regulator itself. It still works fine though.

Pretty sweet vid. I was just looking at this exact cutter on ebay. I'm not paying $1000 for a tool to cut metal. I'm not a pro thats going to use it 8 hours a day so I think your vid proved that this is every bit as capable as the expensive machines. Good deal

when you let go of the trigger and air keeps flowing don't worry about it actually that's how it is suppose to work the air cools the tip the machine has a setting of a couple of seconds for the air to keep flowing for cool down you may not get that all the time you may only notice it when you cut excessively

This is an excellent plasma cutter, the consumables that came with this did not yield good results. I use Esab 21008 extended life nozzle and Esab 20862 electrode from the Esab PT-31XLPC Torch. This greatly increased its cutting capabilities. Youbwill breathe new life with the esab hardware. I cut 1/2" steel with this and with the esab hardware, its a slow process but it works. Stick to this model cut 50 without the digital amp readout. I bought this 2.5 years ago for my dad, He has used this plasma cutter many times. I bought a heavy duty clamp and thick ground cable for it. You can find the quick connect plugs on ebay from river-weld. I am actually setting up a petsonal welding shop in my garage and buying another one of these but for myself.

For Gods sake get the trigger fixed. Saw your video for the first time and is a fair representation of the machine. I guess some one has told you by now, the delay between the trigger function is to allow the tip to cool down after a cut. Also dont turn the unit off quickly after prolonged use as it will cook the electonics. From experience.;)

the guns are fairly standard for the cheaper cutters.the air attachment is a threaded fitting and the switch is a standard 2 wire connect.of course you will have bigger consumerbles.just seach sg51 plasma torch,if you buy one ,get a decent length.say 5 metres.

Trust me, you do NOT want to cut without a glove. Under certain conditions your hand may slip and the torch may "surge" forward. When this happens, depending on the angle of the torch, the molten metal can spray right up at your hand. This even happens in this video at 3:45, luckily it sprayed away from you. I've had it spray at my hand and put a nice big hole in a glove, and a painful (although minor since I had the glove) burn to make me remember it.

I actually got my consumables from the same ebay vendor where I got the cutter itself. I ordered a 30pack of everything (or something like that). I believe the parts are universal, so you may actually be able to use name brand stuff from your local welding shop. You could always take your parts in and see if they match? Your user name implies you dropped a diesel into a (sami) zuki? What motor did you go with? I wheel a 72' FJ40 and the guys I go with all drive LCs and zuks.

russtuff Yep! I have an old walkaround video on my channel if you check it out. It's almost complete now, just waiting for my radiator to come in so I can take it for a test spin. I used an AHU TDI VW motor, that I converted to mechanical with a special injection pump, to eliminate all the electronics. It's been quite a project because I have a tracker transmission and nothing fits quite right, the ACME kit helped a lot, but it's still a huge mess lol.

Diesel Zuk Sweet I'll check out your video. I was going to guess you were doing a TDI, but the Tracker trans is a nice touch. One of my buddies has talked about swapping a Tracker motor and trans into his but he ended up just not doing anything :) I've had a couple Toyota pickups myself, but never really got around to swapping out the 22RE. I don't love that motor (though I know a lot of people do), and had to rebuild one for an 85 Hilux I had years ago. Fun stuff!

Wouldn't a higher pressure setting provide more cooling? From your video it looked like the higher setting also cause greater splatter, which to me indicates more oxidation, where as the standard setting appeared to be smoother and more controlled. Ideally you shouldn't actually contact the tip to the material. Some higher quality companies use a standoff for 1/8" or so gap.

Pressure that’s too high results in a variable arc. That arc spits all over. Often it causes metal to fly around in the cut. Usually, more dross at the bottom as well. Experiment with pressure, but don’t go much m0re than + - 15% or so from the rating.

Russtuff - Would this be an OVERKILL if you were cutting out rusty areas in a car body that might be 18 or 20 gauge (much thinner than what you cut here)...?
@russtuff
@russtuff 10 жыл бұрын
It can handle way thicker material than 18ga, but when cutting sheet metal you have he benefit of being able to cut much faster. If I needed a plasma cutter for sheet metal, I think I would buy this one.
@DanTheManIOM

russtuff - What wiring did you do for this unit ? 30 AMP or 50 Amp ? Guy at big box store said I needed 8 gauge for 50 Amp service. I don't know. Thanks
@russtuff
@russtuff 10 жыл бұрын
DanTheManIOM I honestly can't remember how mine is wired, but I'm certain there are some guidelines in the manual (which I can't find). I would use 8ga for 40amps and 10ga for 30 amps. You might get away with 8ga for 50 amps depending on how long the line is. I think 6ga is rated for 55 amps or so. If you can't find anything more concrete let me know and I'll try to dig up some specs.

russtuff My Machine works great. (I have the yellow one - the gauge is in the machine up front) and 30 AMP is ok, I ran it at 30 amps most of the day and never tripped the 30 Amp breaker...I ran 50 feet of 8 gauge (rated for 50 Amp)....I said, if I go cheap and it does not work, what am I really saving ? Nothing if I have to come back and redo it.

What do you think of the new digital ones. Digital inverter. 265.00. Seems really cheap. I would only be cutting car sheet metal. Are these cheaper ones like this any good. Do you have to send back for repair if something goes wrong. or are there people out there that can repair them.

Heh, repair them. That’s very good. The importers just buy some required minimum from the factory to get a price. Maybe they stock parts, and maybe not. Where do you expect to send then for repairs? When buying stuff like this, I highly recommend buying from Harbor Freight, Grizzly or Northern. Yes, you likely will pay some more, but if your unit does break, it’s much easier to get it fixed, as these are real companies. Many times, these others on eBay, which are all selling the same machines, are one guy who is set up by a third party as an eBay company. So usually you have to send the machine to the Chinese factory for service. It’s not worth the price of the machine. So unless it’s something minor that you can fix, if it really breaks, you just throw it away.

I am new to plasma cutters. Does plasma cutters require any special supply of gases to operate? I am planning to get one but am afraid of any recurring costs.
@russtuff

+Jia Jun You need an air compressor is all. In industry, specific gasses might be used for specific cut situations. It's not really a thing for home gamers though.

You need an air compressor big enough to keep up. Different models have different air requirements so you have to look at that. A really good air drier is also helpful.

Has anyone tried the 70A Colossal Tech Plasma cutter and is there any service centers in the LasVegas area to get them fixed if it breaks down??
@russtuff
@russtuff 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't even know they made a 70A. My guess is that you will have a hard time finding a local service provider since these all seem to be coming from the same factory in China. Parts for the 50A seem to be available on eBay at least....

thanks for the review, it may be the perfect tool for my weekend warrior projects. can you recall the thickness you could cut on 110 power?
@russtuff
@russtuff 9 жыл бұрын
I get that question a lot, but mine does not have a 110v option. It is 220v only. They must be offering them with the option to do both now.
