I find that using vinegar to remove rust won't last very long as the rust will come back in no time. What I do now is using the electrolysis method, basically it's washing soda as the electrolyte, a piece of steel or iron as the sacrificial anode (positive) and the piece that i want to remove the rust as the cathode (negative). I use a 5v 1a power supply for this and it works fine, don't even need to brush it once it's done.

That sounds great. But I didn't want to remove the sprocket. They are very difficult to remove, sometimes. After cleaning, I oiled the surface and it seems to protect the steel from the rust returning.

Well done, how did you do the chain?

The chain was really bad and the links were frozen with rust, so I replaced the chain.

@@edscyclingwithcoyotes yea, you could spend a lot of trying to loosen stiff links but it probably isn't worth it. Good luck.
