When you think of Rusty Wallace, Midnight is THE car. From 1992 to 1994, merely uttering the world “Midnight” in the NASCAR garage was enough to strike fear in the hearts of drivers and teams. During that span, Wallace and Midnight simply dominated the NASCAR circuit. Together, they captured an astonishing 13 wins (41.9%), 25 top-five finishes (80.6%) and 27 top-ten (87.1%) finishes in a 31-race span, as well as leading 3,918 of 12,001 possible laps (31.4%) during the period. The legendary Wallace was elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2013. Upon his election, Wallace’s eldest son, Greg, headed an effort-with support from Penske Racing, MillerCoors and Ford Motor Company-to restore Midnight to its 1994 trim for Rusty’s NASCAR Hall of Fame exhibit. A conversion from Midnight’s 1998 Ford Taurus body, back to its 1994 Ford
Thunderbird skin and its iconic Miller Genuine Draft livery was thus undertaken by a group of former Penske Racing employees.
Afterward, Midnight rightfully appeared on static display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame-as the centerpiece of Wallace’s induction exhibit-before returning to his personal collection. The car has subsequently been returned to its 1994 “race-ready” condition. It features an authentic, period correct Ford “C3” engine, built on an actual Penske Racing block, producing approximately 750 horsepower.

@@billbry oh I know the feeling. I was totally consumed by NASCAR and auto sports. I used to race scca back in the late '70s and early '80s. I had a great deal of regard and respect for Winston cup. Man, I sat in this car on April 4th 1993, tears in my eyes, celebrating Rusty's win and still devastated by Kulwicki's death. They were my favorite two drivers at the time, and when Alan left us, Rusty came out and won Bristol in his honor three days later. I was ten years old at the time and it wrecked me to lose my favorite driver. I'd met both of them numerous times growing up, and when we found Rusty in the pits, he was more than happy to let me sit in it, same as Alan had the year prior after his win. This car will always hold a very special meaning in my heart. Thank you for this video and for bringing back these memories.

My mom became a reluctant nascar fan back then because of my dedication of watching since 84 with Ford becoming a force to reconned with again, she was in tears that night....so sad.....and then a few months later we lost Davey.

Best NASCAR stuff I’ve seen in a long time. No one gave better post race interviews than Rusty especially when he was pissed. This is coming from an Earnhardt guy. So many reasons why NASCAR isn’t big anymore to fans of the sport of this era (90’s) that I won’t even attempt it in this comment section. Just to bring up one point: would be the uniqueness of “Midnight” vs the what NASCAR has done to the cars over the last 15 or so years.

Tears of excitement in my eyes as many years ago I pitted for Joe Ruttman in USAC, Rusty was just starting out and his brother Kenny and I were sitting on the wall at a dirt track after running buckets of water back n fourth from the infield to cool the cars down. Neither Rusty nor Joe did very well, but I was a Rusty fan as he sat next to me and we both had dirty blonde afros and Joe said we looked like the bopsy twins lol. Miss those days of NASCAR. Rusty was my favorite driver. I was at my yearly aircraft maintenance recurrent training several years ago in Dallas and he was there for his pilot recurrent also. Such a surprise to meet him. I was in the break room having a coffee and I look up and he was standing right in front of me talking to his son on the phone. Rusty was my guy!! This car is so beautiful. I never realized it. I think because we didn't have HD TV back then. Everything was pretty fuzzy compared to now. Can't wait to see and hear this thing out on the track.

Same name, born in 94 myself…Midnight has always been my absolute favorite racecar, without question, Petty’s Daytona a close second. Met Rusty and Kyle Petty in Nashville when I was a young kid, 2000ish maybe? Told him I was named after him. Absolutely no telling what was going through his head😂 Would love to be able to meet him again somehow!

I've been a Rusty fan since I was a kid (30 years), I think any NASCAR fan of this era or Rusty fan would agree when I say a hard lap at Richmond and Bristol would be appropriate. This is a great video. Thanks to you and Rusty. I can't wait to see that car out and about in the future.

When I first met my wife she had never been to a NASCAR race. I had been going with my grandfather since the 70's. Our first race together was the 600 at Charlotte. I was young and dumb. This is not a good first race to take your new wife. I had my radio on and was listening to old #3 as always. My wife was bored to death. She told me she wanted to go walk around because she was bored. I took my radio off and turned the channel to #2. I programmed the radio so the channel number matched the car number. Rusty was always "excited" for lack of a better term on the radio. I put the radio on her head. Her eyes got huge and she was yelling and cheering for the rest of the long race. She was a Rusty fan ever since that day. She said she has never heard so many colorful words placed in the same sentence in her life! LOL. Thanks Rusty. My wife loved your passion on the track. She also wondered why you always flicked your wrist when you shifted. Ya, she went deep after that first race. The car is totally awesome. Why did they switch from Red to Gray chassis? Was it a chassis builder thing or was it because the gray paint was lighter?

Father passed away in 2019 and was still wearing one of his many rusty hats till he was cremated. Still love being able to see the man my father idoled. Reminds me all the wins we watched rusty get together in the living room.

Man, I can't tell you the smile on my face watching a legend reunite with a car equally infamous! Don't know if Rusty will see this... I was a Jeff Gordon fan growing up in the 90's, but I sure loved the way Midnight looked. It was such a striking car especially in a night race! For the longest time I had no idea if it was a dark blue or black... I can't wait to see him behind the wheel once again! If you guys at Stapleton see this... I wanna know how cool you think it would be to make a stock car "sandbox" game that incorporates bits of history from the sport's past! Cars and chassis that have history behind them, giving them character and infamy. Maybe some sort of dynasty career mode that leans on the stories behind the scenes like we have seen in your videos! Still working on putting together some people who might wanna make something like this happen.

I work for Sherwin williams automotive and Sherwin williams did all the colors for DEI. I can look up the colors in our system today.
