RV LED lights are a great way to conserve power. They use far less energy than incandescent, fluorescent or halogen light bulbs, and stay cooler, too. 50% our factory supplied LED's on the ceiling flicker after a few minutes of use by year 2 of use. So we bought substitutes from M4 LED and wow what a difference. Brighter light and heat sinks are superior. M4 was very helpful and supportive! Bought from them as recommended in one of the earlier RV Geeks KZfaq videos.

Upgraded my Class C RV to M4 LED bulbs a little over a year ago. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much less power they use and how much less generator needed to charge the batteries. Going solar hopefully in the near future.

Do you have a video on how to completely remove the fluorescent light fixtures altogether? I found the video on how to swap to led but I’d like to remove mine completely.

Hi Stephrae70. No, sorry, we don't. Removing the fixtures is likely going to leave you with two issues to deal with: holes (for the wiring and for all the screws that held the light in place) and a mark/indentation in the ceiling material from where the original fixture was installed (more likely the older the RV is). If you think you can hide/repair those issues, you can take off the lens cover on your lights and you should be able to see the screws that hold the fixture to the ceiling. Remove those and the light will come partway down... with the wires still connecting it. Make sure the 12V power is off before dealing with it... but you should be able to cut wires (or undo and connectors). Just be sure to use a wire nut and some electrical tape to be sure there's no exposed wires that could short before pushing them up into the hole in the ceiling.

@@RVgeeks so there’s a set of wires (I’m assuming one negative and one positive) to each light bulb on this dinette light fixture. Then there’s an addition set going to the on/off switch... can I cap them all and use just the two wires found to the on/of switch? Or should I use a set going directly to the light bulb? The replacement piece has its own off/on switch built in. I’ll try to attach the photos of the older one and the replacement! ( I can’t seem to attach photos... )

Hi Stephrae. Sorry about not being able to upload photos here... KZfaq doesn’t allow it. But if you can upload them somewhere else (like Google photos or iCloud) you might be able to share the link here. As for the light, yes... it sounds like there’s one positive and one negative wire run to each bulb... to bring power to them from the switch. We’d assume you want to completely remove the old fixture, so you’d want to use the set of wires that bring power through the wall and, presumably, to the switch in that old fixture. Hooking those up to the new fixture should get you what you need.

It was about six years ago that we replaced all our interior bulbs to LEDs. We used both the 2700 K and the 5000k LED bulbs depending upon where the light fixture was.

As usual, great information! My 05 Newmar Kountry Star (the cheap version of yours) ha! Is almost fully converted and it really makes a difference while boondocking. Now to watch your headlight conversion.. great job guys! BTW, what part of the desert are you guys hanging out?

I'm curious if you have continued to use LED tubes in your fluorescent fixtures or if you have moved to fixture replacement?

I usually enjoy the content you produce, but I have to say this is one area where you led me astray. Shortly after I purchased my motorhome 4 years ago, I followed your advice and purchased quite a few of these LED bulbs from M4. I ordered 19 bulbs totaling over $200 of varying sizes/types between June 2016 to November 2017. I spent the extra $$ and ordered the Elite series. Within about 18 months, nearly all of them failed and I ended up removing the remainder. Some quit working, some started to dim and produce less light, and some started to become incredibly hot while operating. Quite a few of them came apart in my hand when I pulled them out of the sockets after they had failed. So, in my opinion, the M4 bulbs definitely aren't worth the extra money. Now I purchase high-output ones on Amazon. They cost about $4 a piece. I've had much better luck with these (much longer life, more consistent operation, etc). And, even if they fail, the cost to replace them is much lower than the M4 ones.

Sorry to hear. But this is the first and only time we have ever heard a review anything like this about M4 products. Our first thought was that you have some sort of major voltage issue with your RV. But the fact that you’re saying that M4 bulbs fell apart in mass, and then cheap Amazon bulbs installed in the same RV all work flawlessly just doesn’t jive with the experience we’ve had with M4, and the literally hundreds of positive comments we’ve received about their products over the years. We’re sorry if you had this experience, but this is literally the first time we have ever heard anything even close to this sort of report about M4.

Nice video, technical question for you, are you using the AirPods to record audio? If so how do you get both mic’s you work

Good spotting, and great question! We were recording our audio on a Blue Yeti mic, sitting in front of us just out of frame (and right in front of our laptop). We didn’t want interference from Steve’s audio into that mic, so we fed our laptop sound into the earbuds so we could each hear him out of one ear. Used the earbuds solely to isolate his sound.
