6.3 mile out and back hike featuring Hayter's fire tower built in 1939, a killer view of the tallest mountain in VA Mt Rogers elevation 5,728 ft, and Whitetop Mountain elevation 5,520 ft, and of course the amazing labyrinth of a sandstone slot canyon. The Channels are truly a hidden natural wonder of Virginia.

I love the Channels!😀 Before the brain tumor, a friend and I went up to the cabin at the top of the fire tower. Even back in 08 the bottom platform (level)had been removed, but we climbed the frame to the intact level and went up the stairs from there. I’m glad the Nature Conservancy was able to put a halt to the planned subdivision. I’ve not been back since 2017. I think it’s about time to head back.

Would the top of the channels be good for sunrise? Also, there’s another way to get to it and it’s about 10 miles out and back. Not sure if you know if that trail is overgrown since it may not be heavily trafficked since the new trail.
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl Жыл бұрын
There are 2 views, not sure which direction they face. One looks out next to the fire tower and the other one is the opposite direction. I am sure you could get an excellent sunrise or sunset from up there. But there is no camping anywhere around that area. Its a fragile ecosystem. There are some privately owned cabins that you can rent that you pass on the 6.3 mile hike up. I show in the video where I park. I don't know about a 10 mile route to get there. I did not see another place where the trail split off to come is from any other direction. Its on All Trails the route that I took. The trail will never be overgrown as its a popular trail and very wide until you get passed the fire tower. Not sure if that helped or not. ~RVA~

The trees, rocks in the woods, and the rocky outcropping are all covered with graffiti. It's bad there because you can drive to that location. From what I understand is as soon as they spend all the time and effort to clean it up, they just go back and do it again. It's sad.

So glad! No, it was rainy early in the afternoon and we weren't near the campfire rings. We set up camp right in the middle of the road to get up to the top of the mountain since we were the only ones camping there. The other spots were slanted and nobody wants to sleep like that, right? LOL! We opted for flat ground. We were on private property, rather than a campground for this one. That song is by Ten Towers, its called In Our Hands. Thanks Ally for watching this one. ~RVA~
