This was my first time hiking to the summit of Mount Washington. I'm not sure I could have made it without being able to stay the night at the Lakes of the Clouds mountain hut.
There were some audio challenges due to rain, wind, and waterfalls. But I am happy to have made it home with this footage from four different cameras in my backpack.
Shoutout Hello! to Abby from the Hut Croo, who has a design business called Abby Clark Design.

For a couple of summers in the 1980s I was in an environmental sciences program that culminated in a 3 day trip to Mt Washington and a stay at Lakes In The Clouds. It hasn't changed at all in 40 years. Amazing! Thanks for this video.

Wow! That was a great video and congratulations on making that major hike! I was relieved to see that warm, dry stop at the hut with food and shelter and all those other happy hikers! Very interesting... (now I won't have to do all that hiking to see what it's like! : P )

Great video. It was nice meeting you at Lakes of the Clouds and getting to chat with you. We were the group of 4 guys that wished you a good day on the beginning of the final climb to Mt Washington.

Hi! That was very cool how we were all strangers in the hut but came to feel connected after several hours shut in from the bad weather outside.

Neat! A classmate and I did this after we finished doing a couple of sections of The Long Trail. '87? I guess. His knees were giving him trouble so we took the Cog down. I took a chance and drank some water from the falls on the climb up. Fortunately I didn't get sick.

Sometimes I like to imagine if all the water in the world was safe to drink. The Cog idea is good. I wouldn't mind doing that sometime, hike one way and ride the other way!

Once past the Gem Pool the climb up those granite rocks becomes (seemingly) nearly vertical; you toughed it out! Another fine video that brought back valued memories. Thanks

My favorite video going up to and showing Lake of the Clouds hut by far. I spent the summer of '75 there when I was 15 along with a few other huts doing some trail maintenance for a short time. Loved playing my blues harp, watching the sunrise on Mt. Monroe. ❤

Another great video! You do such a good job conveying the experience of the places you hike and camp. You're also very good at including the viewers. It felt like I was hiking alongside you. Congrats on tagging the highest peak! I only get to visit the Whites once a year (and that's still over a month away) so thank you for letting us vicariously visit the mountains with you!

I agree. You showed us the trail. I saw the part I hiked wearing snowshoes. It was so eroded we had to take our snowshoes off. The trail wasn't wide enough to fit them. I think that section has been rerouted; So thanks for showing the trail. So many videographers do not. They keep the camera on themselves while talking/walking. What's up with that? I love the sounds of the whites, Mt. W in particular. I don't care for funky music during meals but that's ok. Didn't last too long and I do have a mute button. Very realistic video especially that poor man shaking from wet and cold. Very dangerous situation to be in. Hope he had dry clothes in his backpack no matter what they were.

You have more energy than I do, plus a few decades younger. I have not hiked up and down lately. I use the train. I hike up Ammonosuc Ravine to the hut, stay over, then hike up to the summit then take the train down. I'm lucky to be able to do that. I hope you can to when you're an old lady. I thought you would choose the Jewell trail for the decent. That is very pretty (no waterfalls) and dryer then Ammo. You end up across the road directly from the hikers parking lot. The last few yards you cross a very nice bridge, photo op, then a short hill to the parking lot. The Jewel was the first trail I took up there. Amazing views. I tried going from Mizpah hut to Clouds hut (2017) but on top of Mt. Pierce the wind and rain nearly blew us over. People coming the other way advised us not to do it. So, we bailed out, going down Crawford Path to Rt. 302 drying off at Crawford Station. The whites have to flex its muscles to tell us who's boss!! (oct. 2022)

Thank you for your wonderful comment! I am taking notes. I was too afraid to try the Jewel Trail since I did not know it and I at least knew what I would see going back down the same way. But now I will do it. In fact I love your entire plan of using the train for part of the journey. Now that I hiked it once, I have nothing to prove and can mix in the train if it makes life more enjoyable.

Great video! I’ve been up top many times but never from that side except as a child with my family on the cog. I once had the great good fortune to be on top during one of the warmest and clearest and calmest days ever. It got to 69F with 100% visibility. I’ve also experienced some absolutely miserable conditions up there.

Great video Rachael....I so enjoyed watching your adventures....especially up to Lakes in the Clouds. My small family and I made that hike many years ago when our kids were 2 and 6 (my husband was 63 and such a trouper!) Our 2 yr old was in the backpack most of the trip! I remember the great difficulty in climbing this trail and the exhilaration once we arrived. We ended hiking back down that same day. It was the most challenging hike our small family ever did. Thanks for providing that wonderful memory almost 30 years ago. Don't know if I could manage that hike these days....too many slippery rocks to navigate. Happy travels from a fellow New Hampshirite.

Rachael, so glad I found your video. did you do this in July? I am doing the traverse, hut to hut early July. Not sure what to bring as far as clothings are concerned. Amy tips?

@RachelWhelton 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, July 21. I researched years of Julys and saw low chance of rain. And then it rained! Check the Summit report everyday leading up to your trip. You will need a full change of clothes in case your main outfit gets wet or damaged. You will probably find more detailed full videos about hiking layers. And of course a warm and lightweight jacket! Yes, Interesting you mention the capacity of the hut. The bookings looked full online but another hiker said he got his reservation two days earlier (I made my reservation in April). Perhaps they were under-booking coming off the Covid year. I do not know for sure.
