RX 7800 XT in Alan Wake 2 | 1080p, 1440p, 4K, Ray Tracing and Path Tracing

In this video we'll benchmark the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT in Alan Wake 2. We'll be testing at 1080p, 1440p and 4K, as well as use multiple presets, test FSR Super Resolution as well as ray tracing, and even path tracing.
Alan Wake 2 is an extremely graphically demanding game, and unfortunately when it comes to ray tracing, the RX 7800 XT struggles quite a bit. I would highly recommend not to use Path Tracing with the RX 7800 XT, especially in this game, as the visual compromises you need to make to get a playable framerate just negates any of the enhancements ray tracing and path tracing bring to this game.
Alan Wake 2 is one of the best looking games that released in 2023, and because of that, it is also extremely demanding on GPUs.

Great video! I do have a question though, if you don't mind... What version of MSI Afterburner are you using to also display the GPU VRAM usage? I can't seem to find the vram display options in the app's settings.

I just downloaded the latest version the other day. You are looking at two settings essentially here to display VRAM allocated and VRAM usage. VRAM allocated is called "Memory Usage" and VRAM actual usage is called "Memory Usage \ process". I just renamed them individually to what you see on the screen. This is still an estimation, but a far more accurate estimation than allocated VRAM.

Hey dude! I have a question regarding your 7800 XT since I'm planning on getting one really soon :D Which model of the 7800xt do you have? Is it loud? and do you reccomend it?

Hey bud! This is the XFX Qick 319 model, and it's one of the quietest GPUs I have had. The temps stay quite low and you almost never hear the fans. Definitely gets a recommendation from me!

@@brexy9984 The Hellhound is one of those iconic GPUs, so if they go for the same price, I personally would choose the Hellhound. But the XFX one was so cool and quiet, you can see it barely breached 60C, and that while running in the middle of summer with temps reaching 35C outside.

Try FMF, I think you'll get llike 70fps avg 1440p, Medium RT, Low PT and Ultra preset (with FSR Quality)

AFMF helps, but the FSR 3 mod is better in the way that it is UI aware, and also it doesnt deactive during fast motion. The framerate gains are about the same though, and if you dont want to use mods, AFMF is definitely an option!

if you have a 7800xt and want to play Alan Wake 2 decently, forget about ray tracing, it's completely out of the question even with FSR active

RT in general is a bullsh*t. I know people that have Nvidia and never enable it. It cuts down the performance so much that it’s not worth it. Modern games look incredibly beautiful already.

@@thishallakshan7410 Thanks! I'm okay, and I do have a tough skin, as you need it to not get upset at each hand every negative comment. But sometimes you have a bit of an off day and the comments have a slightly bigger impact than usual. But then you just shrug it off and march forth! Appreciate the support bud!

🤣🤣🤣 Хм, 7800 XT немного лучше в некоторых играх с чисто растровой производительностью, но совсем не справляется с трассировкой лучей. Я только что снял видео с Palworld, где 4070 немного быстрее даже в растре. Но лично я бы выбрал 4070 Super, который превосходит оба этих варианта. Если вы не можете потратить дополнительные деньги на Super, вам нужно решить, является ли более быстрая трассировка лучей более ценной, чем производительность чистого растра, но в целом 7800 XT примерно на 10% быстрее, чем 4070 в чистом растре.

@@Mostly_Positive_Reviews😁 Большое спасибо за ответ.)) Трассировка лучей для меня не самое главное, но насколько я понял, в этой игре она встроенная, поэтому у меня и встал этот вопрос. Не хочу переплачивать за 7800 XT если эта карта хуже 4070. Хотя, есть ещё 7900 Gre, относительно бюджетная видеокарта, но стоит много для меня.🤔 Так что как-то так.>_

До этого я ещё опирался на то, что при включении frame generation 4070 доминирует, но многие пишут как про его минусы, так и про то, что Fsr 3 нивелирует даже это преимущество. 🤔

@@eternity__65 FSR 3 определенно помогает, и он распространяется очень быстро. Я читал, что 7900 GRE кое-где станет доступен широкой публике, хотя понятия не имею, сколько он будет стоить. Проблема при сравнении 7800 XT и 4070 связана с производительностью видеопамяти и трассировки лучей. 7800 XT гарантирует, что вам не хватит видеопамяти в течение следующих 5 лет при разрешении 1440p, но трассировка лучей у него совершенно отсутствует. С другой стороны, 4070 на 10% медленнее, чем 7800 XT в растре, но намного быстрее в RT, но у него всего 12 ГБ видеопамяти, поэтому в ближайшие 3 года она может закончиться, особенно при использовании трассировки лучей. 4070 также на 10% дороже (500 долларов против 550 долларов и 600 долларов за 4070 Super). Но вы получаете больше игр, поддерживающих DLSS 3 Frame Generation, вы получаете лучшее качество изображения с DLSS, а не с FSR. Мне нравится 7800 XT, и за его цену вы получаете приличные характеристики и производительность, но у меня такое чувство, что вы будете разочарованы его производительностью трассировки лучей, и в этом случае я бы посоветовал выбрать 4070. What are you on about? It is the high preset, I literally show you the options menu where the Quality Preset selected is High. Also, there is no Ultra preset, only custom, and then the only options that have an Ultra setting is texture resolution and scattered object density, which get set to Ultra anyway on the high preset.

Yes. If I'm not mistaken you can also enable fluid motion at the same time and pretty much double the frame generation FPS. That's what I do on cyberpunk. 1728p fsr3 quality, ultra ray tracing hitting 120fps. Feels smooth and look smooth. 1440p fsr3 quality, path tracing hitting 100fps. 20-30 ms on both occasions. Can't wait when both are fully optimised and released.

Good video too show how a 7800XT perform. But no joke thats worlds vs a 4070. 1080p all Maxed out pathraching Dlss q plus frame generation are 110 fps up too 150 fps. 1440 p is also no problem. AMD must upgrade rt, that will be a big problem in the future.

Indeed. If you want decent RT at this price point then the 4070 is the way to go. It'll be even worse for AMD with the 4070 Super at the same price. The 7800 XT is a great raster GPU, but really pulls up short when using extensive RT unfortunately.

@@gan7940 It's hard to say, but it might hold up for a bit still. Many people jumped on the 8GB not enough bandwagon when the 3070 struggled to play it with 8GB of VRAM. A few patches later and the 3070 can play it just fine, meaning the game could definitely have been better optimized, meaning more GPUs would have had no issue with it. That said, unfortunately we are in an age where unoptimized games are a given, and there might be a time soon when such a game will release and 12GB will not be enough at 1440p. We'll then have to wait for patches etc, and eventually we'll be able to play it fine with 12GB of VRAM. That is an issue, and it kinda goes both ways I believe. On the one hand Nvidia is more stingy with their VRAM than AMD, but on the other hand gamers shouldnt need to have to compensate for poor optimization. You shouldnt have to buy a GPU with more VRAM if 12GB is actually enough just because a game has been terribly optimized. TLDR: 12GB will be an issue with unoptimized games in the near future. Optimized games shouldnt have an issue though for at least a few years. Just my opinion of course.
