Today we release the fifth of eight segments featuring an unbelievable night with two baseball legends. The Kings of the Diamond Dinner, featuring the all-time strikeout leader (Nolan Ryan) and all-time hits leader (Pete Rose), was held March 19, 2015 at the Marriott Plaza Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The dinner was the kickoff to H-E-B Big League Weekend, an annual two-game Major League Baseball spring training exhibition series held at the iconic Alamodome. It was a great night with two legends recalling their epic battles on the field, sharing stories about baseball’s colorful past, and their insights on the game today and the players that play it. he doesnt even have a photographic memory of the play. rose did not knock the ball out of the catchers hand. the asshole clubbed him after the ball was in back of rose. totally unneeded. glad he isnt in the hall

Pete faced some of the greatest pitchers of all time: Koufax, Drysdale, Spahn, Burdette, Gibson. Jenkins, Hunter, Sutton, Carlton, Marichal, Niekro, Seaver, Ryan just to name a few. No way Ichiro faced that level of pitching.

Pete is mlb.....hes the best all around player ever.... my uncle is a die hard met fan and he remembers Ryan's rookie season .....still till this day my uncles mad the mets let him go .....hes a legend

All around best player ever? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. I will agree that he played the game harder than anybody and nobody other than maybe bob Gibson had the competitive fire that Pete had. He is on his own planet as far as tenacity goes, but there’s at least 10 players I can think of off the top of my head that were better all around players than Pete. Im not trying to incite an argument jsut stating my opinion

You can just tell how much Pete Rose love the game with every story he reminisce. Every little detail he remembers. How can you keep a guy like that out of the Hall of Fame? 😢

They're talking about two different games. The Rose-Bochy collision was Game Four. The Ryan walk of Rose was game five and Rose was not the leadoff man. But they told the stories pretty well.

Game 5 of the NLCS, Larry Bowa led off the top of the 8th, not Pete Rose, like Nolan said. Bases were loaded when Rose came up. 7 pitch AB. Not an 18 pitch AB like Rose said. Proof that memories in general are pretty inaccurate. Still, I could listen to these guys talk baseball all day for weeks. Rose especially.

Reds were World Champions in 1980. Strike season, the league split the season into two halves. The Reds had the best record in the MLB and were not allowed in the playoffs. Bull-- makes Reds World Champions in 1980.

give me a break. rose was never that great of a player. he was at best, the 4th best hitter on the reds. johnny bench, joe morgan, and tony perez were all more deadly than pete rose. pete rose has to be the most over rated player in baseball history. i followed baseball back then. there were easily 40 other players (non-pitchers) that would not have been traded in a swap for rose. at least. probably more than that. there was never any talk about rose being a hall of fame player, while he was playing. NEVER. most teams had 2-3 star players, upon which the team was built. rose was never good enough to build a team around him. i get so tired of hearing all this ridiculous nonsense about pete rose.

@@rbrtmasten1 did you actually see rose play ? for me to consider someone a superstar, he has to be someone that you build a team around. mays and mccovey from the giants. kaline from the tigers. ted williams and yazstremski from the red sox. frank robinson from the reds/orioles. mickey mantle, yogi berra from the yankees. hank aaron from the braves. harmon killebrew, tony oliva from the twins. orlando cepeda from several teams. roberto clemente from the pirates. reggie jackson from the athletics. i am sure there were others. these come immediately to mind. pete rose was simply not in this class. now it is true that i dont like him, as a person. but i would be the first one to admit that he gave 110%. and he was a good player to have for a team. but his talent was not up there like the above players. he is not someone you build a team around

@@jimmybrice6360 Saw him play in 1971 at Jarry park in Montreal and for his whole career with the Reds and Phillies. Don’t like him as a person as well but he is my all time lead off hitter because of his skill and ability to get on base and HUSTLED HIS REAR END OFF EVERY GAME

Gee, memory sure is a funny thing ...Nolan, Pete didn't lead off the 8th it was Larry Bowa who did walk...Pete was the 4th batter in that inning & Pete, it wasn't a 18 pitch at bat it was only 7 pitches...and he fouled off 3 of those pitches (the other 4 were obviously balls) but hey their versions makes for a better story.

Pete wasn't the lead off in the 8th. He was the fifth at bat that inning and he did walk on I think 7 or 8 pitches. The bases were loaded so a run scored on that walk. Pete did walk on a high fast ball.

Marvin Heyboer True. Also strange how Ryan talks about the line drive hit back to him off Rose's bat in that series. He said it was headed to his head, but it was really just below the knee. I suppose after thousands of baseball memories some are bound to get distorted.

Bowa singled to left. Boone had an infield single off Ryan's glove, Gross laid a bunt down the third base line for a hit. Rose hit fourth in the inning, and walked on seven pitches driving in Bowa from third.

I think that they have played so many games that they can't remember perfect details it's more keys moments and those moments against the same people are just skewed in order. It common when people with huge lives look back but if there was video they would have been all over it

It amazes me how players forget what happened in games when trying to recall the game. Ryan said that Rose led off the 8th inning of game 5 of the 1980 NLCS game...Not so! Rose batted 4th in the inning. Bowa led off with a single. Boone hit a comebacker that Ryan wasn't able to handle and it was ruled a single (should have been a double play. Greg Gross hit a bunt single to load the bases. And then, Rose walked. Rose said it was an 18-pitch at-bat (lol!)...Sorry Pete, it was only a 7-pitch at-bat. Nonetheless, Rose walked to force in Bowa and make the score 5-3, Astros. Bill Virdon brought in Sambito and Dallas Green countered with Keith Moreland to ph for Bake McBride. Moreland hit into a fielder's choice (4-6) making it 5-4, Astros. Virdon made another pitching change and brought in Ken Forsch. Forsch struck out Schmidt and then Del Unser singled to tie the score, 5-5. Manny Trillo then doubled to score two runners (Ramon Aviles who pr for Moreland and Unser) and make the score 7-5 Phillies. Rose said that was the only game where he ran through a stop sign. Not so! It wasn't game 5 that he ran through a stop sign - it was game 4. Luzinski hit the double off of Joe Sambito who was in relief of Dave Smith. Vern Ruhle was the starter in game 4.

For me personally, I'm glad he's not in the hall. Why? Well I've been to the hall 6 times. I had 3 sons all participate in the Dreams Park Tournament in Cooperstown and we always took the Hall tour. For those who do not know, Rose's uniform is in the hall and more people stop in front of it and take the time to explain to their kid how great this man was and how he played the game the right way. He' spotlighted BECAUSE of this hypocritical position by baseball and the hall. Its become a focal part of the tour that may have otherwise been just another object to look at. I dare you to show me anyone else in the building besides maybe Ruth, Abbott and Costello that get more attention on the tour. Don't sweat it Pete.....its truly their loss.

Difference is that he was aggressive and smart who never made mistakes. Lot of arrogant types tend to be passive or dumb particular in tight situations. He was a fundamental type who got the cars and girls.

With all the crap going around today in not just baseball but all pro sports , what did is so minor to what some of these athletes are getting away with its totally asinine to deny one of the greatest players of all time a player who broke the great Ty Cobbs all time hits record , PETE ROSE should already be in the hall . Look at the hair , the absolute slap in the face in the way a certain ethic group defies the sanctity of the sport and wears their uniforms like they damn well please . The uniforms should all be the same thats why they all call them unis . I couldn't be a manager in todays game . Get that crappy hair cut and put on the proper socks and get that dang jewelry off when playing a game ❗❗.

The greatest gambling addict to ever play major league baseball Mr Pete, I repeat Rose. Gambling is an addiction many people have. So the fuc* what. Compared to doped up players playing the game with artificial strength 💪 as a decided advantage gambling addiction ain't shi* !!! Not only was Pete the greatest gambling addict and he'd be the first to admit to that. He was also among the top 5 baseball players in MLB history. His gambling never affected the outcome of a game. Imagine how many alcoholic addicted players there are ? My point is there's many vices we're all guilty of at some point in our lives. Gambling is among the least offensive of all. Your cheating yourself if you keep losing and you're single. If you're winning and can keep winking at lady luck on the way out, who loses then ? The casinos. Good.
