I’m Australian and lived in the US for a while. With the petrol, you basically just swipe your card and then pump and then it takes the money off your card. You can opt to go in and pay first if you know you want a certain amount though 😊

You swipe your card at the pump, and it does a pre-check for an amount determined by the company. Usually, it's something like $150? If your card gets approved, the pump turns on, and you can gas up. Once you hang the handle back up, it sends the actual amount you pumped to the credit company, and the precise amount you spent will be applied to the card. All of that is transparent to the customer - you just wait a few seconds, and the pump turns on. Others have also mentioned you can go into the store and say you want $20 on Pump 9, and the pump will automatically shut off at the pre-paid amount. It's not as complicated as it seems.

American here. We prepay for the gas, we call it here, because otherwise people would leave without paying. It used to be pay after years ago before my time. And only one state here, it's actually a law where they can't pump their own gas. Just looked it up as I forgot where and it's New Jersey. I grew up with a stovetop kettle. But as an adult I've never been able to find a kettle like the one I had as a kid. But they do exist. The ones I find are expensive for some reason. Probably imported. And Hip Hip Horary was more of a thing back when I was a kid. (I'm 39) Now it's anthems from rock bands or movies that get sung. Like Queens song as that's also played at every sporting event ever now.

Jersey here, can confirm we don't touch the pump. It's like a waitress/waiter for gas. I wish we could pump it ourselves. I always feel obligated to tip the attendant that pumps my gas. Many don't because they're so accustomed to it. My reasoning is you tip a waitress or waiter for the convince of serving your food, right? So why aren't we tipping the attendant that pumps gas for our convinence? I understand we're not given an option, but still. It's a hotly debated topic amongst locals whenever it comes up. To tip or not to tip the gas attendants? And yes, hip hip hooray was very common as a youngster. Not so much today. It's weird that I never really noticed it stopped.

Idk about all of America but in California, we can just use our card and it’s not charged until you reach the desired amount as you fill your tank.
@MrWil2209
@MrWil2209 Жыл бұрын
Technically it is prepaid, an amount is held or soft charged on the card, then when you are done pumping, the final amount is updated. You don't see the held amount as pending, but you would see your available balance reduced. A sign on the side of the pump states how much is held, usually $75-$150, it also warns that debit card holds may take some time to release. The pump will stop at the held amount regardless if you have more credit available.
@blueskyla7978
@blueskyla7978 Жыл бұрын
@@MrWil2209 This does depend on the bank. Yes many cards place holds. But my BofA account will let us pay only what we pump. I suppose they depend on us over drafting. But if we have $10 we can pump $10. My Discover card, I get charged a $76 hold. So I only pay inside with that one. I work at a gas station. So many people don't get this concept and act like we are stealing because the bank places holds. Some banks will charge them even when declines until it clears. I've had that happen just paying in a convenience store when we had a different bank before. The guy ran it four times. We got charged but declined four times. Bank fixed it but it took days and we were on vacation. Kinda made things a little harder with less money for our vacation.

In Canada, it's the same; we pay for it beforehand by selecting "pay at the pump." You can pay after if you choose "pay in-store." The machine will prompt you to select an amount to put in. You only get charged what you use; the machine stops once the tank is full, and you get reimbursed for what you didn't use. You also have the option to select "fill up."

American here, worked for a gas station a long time ago... Dealt with a lot of theft issues during the Katrina hurricane. So the idea to pay first is to prevent theft. People point out that you can pay with card or cash and cash is typically cheaper, the reason being is that companies that charge the gas stations a fee for using their credit services, so it's cheaper on the gas station to just take cash than to pay a fee for processing and waiting on card payments. If you know where you're looking for the gas prices, you can guess about how much you want to spend depending if you want to fill your tank, or if you only have enough for the week until your next paycheck you either go in the store and give the clerk the number of the pump you're at, and the price you're putting on it, if you don't pump the entire amount you can come back in for your change (unless you pay with your card it won't matter, you'd do it at the pump), some pumps require you to come into the store to pay prior, this is for theft reasons. The pumps are designed to calculate per gallon how much everything is as it's being pumped. you can clearly read how much you're pumping and the current cost you are pumping into your car, there are people that will pump down to the exact penny and then can pay, but many gas stations have changed away from this option.
@toriala1

I am Canadian, and back 15 years ago I went to USA. I was driving and driving, every gas station I went to was self serve. I could NOT believe it. In Canada, they were like 90% full serve. I had to actually learn how to do it. Fortunately there was a really nice guy, who taught me how to put gas in my car. But that was such a shocker to me. Now in Canada there is around 50% full serve. Considering how cheap the gas was there, it was worth it.... In Canada, for Birthday's we don't do the hip hip either. But there is the rare celebration, like a sport where we will do it. Personally I love it, and it would be fun to do it with Birthday's.

@@Spacemongerr not upset, promise! 🤣 Just genuinely perplexed. I never once questioned microwaving a mug of water for my tea until the Internet shamed me.. Lol. Yeah, I have a pot.. It just feels like an unnecessary added step. Many, if not most, Americans don't have a kettle.. electric or otherwise. It's just not a common appliance here. They sell them, but they're not in most households here. I used to boil my water in a pot before I bought a microwave. Once I got it, I just microwaved the mug and water. Felt like I was cutting out extra steps to get to my cup of tea. We don't microwave the tea bag, just the water. However the disgust & shock at doing so is interesting. I logically don't understand it. So I'm really, genuinely, honestly, truly just curious & interested in the rational & reason behind the distaste for microwaving tea water. What's the big deal? It's there something I've missed? If so, I really need to know. Or is it really just the shock at doing things differently than tradition dictates? Can you maybe shed some light & insight into this? Thanks a bunch ahead of time. ❤️ Ps: I love these guys & will continue watching. I was never offended or upset. If it came off that way I do apologize for the confusion. I just think it's a funny cultural difference & I'm curious to figure out why it's triggering such visceral reactions like disgust from so many people. In my mind it's just hot water. 🤣🤣

At night, some petrol stations have machines to let you get petrol even if working hours are closed. For those, you insert your bank card, select a max amount of money they are allowed to UR up, ( ex. 80 Euro) and THEN you cna pump. Either your vehicle is full before then and you pay less than 80, or at 80 the pump stops.

USA essentially boycotted tea and drinks coffee. I love tea. So don’t get me wrong, it’s a drink we drink. But do I have a kettle? No. The microwave does a faster job and doesn’t take up counter space and need to be plugged in and put away every time I get it out for just my cup of tea because no one else in the House drinks it. Go inside and put the money we had to spend into the tank. That way they will turn off your pump so you don’t go over. It’s a nice feature. There’s nothing worse then only having $10 and your watching the pump. Then something distracts you and you look over and when you looked back you went over the amount you wanted. Americans, most Americans, don't pay for petrol before filling up. We put the card in the machine, or tap or what ever, and it verifies the card is good, then we pump how much we need, then it charges. It doesn't actually charge the card until the pump nozzle is put back on the petrol machine thing. That's how it works. By verifying the card is good and getting the card details into the machine before pumping, it stops people from filling up and driving off without paying.

Nope, not remotely true. We use our debit card and the exact amount spent, is the only amount held. Our pumps tell you how much you've spent in gallons and dollars.

@@jenniferwolford4646 It literally says pre authorization amount meaning, you’re giving permission to hold those funds. The point of pre authorizing purchases is to make sure that money is there, BEFORE YOU PUMP, cause uh, it’s preauthorized. Once you finish pumping fuel, the actual amount is charged to your account and the preauth amount is released. You can’t pump fuel, at least in western Canada, without pre authorizing it or prepaying to prevent theft, it’s the law the came into effect a couple years ago. Prepaying isn’t ideal because if you pump less then what you prepaid, the difference is given it back to you in cash. Maybe you don’t understand the context of preauthorized purchases. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Business accounts and large carlock stations for corporates drivers/accounts are different though, if you’re using a company card.

We don’t just guess. You just swipe your card and start filling up and the gas pump tells you both how many gallons you’ve put in and how much you’ve spent and it increases in real time. You can fill until full or unlatch the handle to stop pumping at any time when you’ve spent or filled up the amount you want.

Late to the party, but I don't see anyone else saying it. To be clear, in American you can get change if you pay too much up front. If you pay $50 cash for gas and you fill up and it's only $42, you just go back inside and ask for the change. If you pay credit you are charged what you fill, you don't select a sum up front unless you want to.

There's this weird thing where people just say the same 3-4 things about Americans as a "Comparison" to the other English speaking countries. the kettle thing always gets me. It's not really all that hard to comprehend... On average, most American's don't drink tea or pour over coffee, we typically drink coffee made from a coffee machine. We don't NEED kettles. And genuinely, not be that guy, I realize it's not that serious, honestly, but who the actual fuck gives a shit if someone puts a mug of water in the microwave to heat it?! You just compared that to being classless or uncouth... It's beyond me why this conversation even had to happen. I love Toni and Ryan's content, I genuinely do, but like... holy hell, there's no common sense with some of their reactions sometimes. If someone said "Did you know in the UK and Australia, there's an electric kettle in almost every house?", I'd simply respond "Well, they have a daily need for one, so that makes sense!". I wouldn't be like "Fuck! Those declassee fools have microwaves, why buy an entire other appliance?!". But it's not that serious, it's just water... I guess I'm just tired of people using the low hanging fruit to make fun of other countries, not just my own. It's just frustrating. Sorry for the rant.

Not all states have prepaid systems in their gas stations. Any state that has fuel attendants there is a good chance they have a post pay system. So New Jersey or Oregon. There are some gas stations in Oregon that prepay but it's very easy to fill, all you have to do is overshoot the amount you would need when the pumping and the card system will take whatever's been pumped off the card. If cash you are owed change.

I haven't paid for "petrol" with cash in a decade or more. I use my rewards credit card, get 5% cash back and don't have to deal with going inside at all. As far as kettles go, I think my Mom used one since she drank tea, but I don't need it for coffee.

In Canada the pump just checks to see if you have funds on your card but only charges the fuel amount. I've had issues in the states because some of the pumps want your zip code. Since I do t have one you have to go in and guess. Really a pain when returning a rental car that needs to be on full. But I will say I have heated water in the microwave haha

I have always used a kettle to make tea. You can't get a good cup of Tea from a microwave. I think if you are a serious Tea drinker you use a kettle. My Mom always used a kettle too. And my children all use a kettle as well. Most American prefer coffee over tea so that may be part of it but not all Americans use the microwave to heat water. I would say my microwave is the least used item in my kitchen so much so that I will probably thrift it to someone.

I’m American, and I’ve NEVER heated up water in a microwave. If I do make tea, which is about 5x a year total, I use a kettle on a stove. Electric? Nahh no need for that shit in my house. What am I gonna do with an electric kettle? It’ll just take up precious counter space. Fuck that.
@ZeroSuitSamo

I do not understand the desdain for microwaving water. Americans simply don't drink enough tea to justify having an electric kettle most of the time (most people will have a drip coffee maker instead, so unless you have a huge kitchen, its hard to justify taking up the counter space for that and an electric kettle), nevermind that they work slower here. And even if someone here does have one, if you are only going to have one cup of tea or coacoa or whatever, then why bother using a kettle? The microwave does not make the water taste like anything, the whole "superheated water exploding" thing is incredibly rare (my father microwaved his water for instant coffee every day when i was growing up and it never happened) and it cuts down the number of steps required between water out of the tap and tea in your belly lol

Petrol: Too many people drive off without paying, stations had to implement paying before pumping. We are really good at calculating how much gas we need and knowing how much money it will take to fill our tanks. Kettles: We do use kettles. Those that put the mug in the microwave are savages who crave being burned. Water that has been heated in the microwave has a tendancy to explode unless one puts a stick or something in the mug. (Science, look it up.) Happy Birthday: We sing, "And many more!" at the end of Happy Birthday. Hope this helps!

In canada we can pay at the pump before we fill our cars with the petrol we call it gas with a card and you put in more then you would need in terms of money but it will only take out what you spent not the whole amount or if you only wanna put 20 dollars in it will stop the gas for you at that point but you can also full your car with the petrol/gas then go into the store and pay for it but paying at the pump is just faster and more convenient

Here in America you pay before you pump because too many dishonest people would pump n run. If you have credit/debit card you pump til its full. If you're paying cash you estimate the price per gallon and how many gallons are left in your tank. Then add the cost of how many gallons you need to put in. Pretty simple actually. Or easy way for me is. Knowing how much it costs to fill my tank from empty. Depending on how much you have in your tank, devide that price per gallon

I don't know where you got your information, but you're wrong. 1. You do not have to pay for petrol before pumping, and you never have to guess at how much you need because the pump shuts off when it's full. 2. Many americans have electric kettles or stove kettles. Some have multiple. That's not to say everyone has one or uses it if they do, but, like you said, you can't buy class. 3. Quite a few americans chant hip hip hooray after singing HB, but some tack on an alto or tenor (think barber shop quartet, maybe? hard to describe) "...and many more...". I love my American friends!
