If only I knew then what I know now. When I was 14, I started a mustang - my first horse that wasn't already a finished cow horse. The first ride was anything but boring! Wrestling a saddle onto a filly who'd only been gentled and trained to lead seemed fine to me. The rationale to lead her out into the middle of a pasture and get on that particular day was that we'd gotten a fresh foot of snow in case I got bucked off. She didn't buck, but I learned she had a great stop from a gallop, and I was thankful for the heavy quilted overalls when I landed on a barbwire fence. So I guess my question is, where was Ryan and the internet in the 70s? 😆

Ground work makes the dream work? First horse I ever started, I'd put in a lot of time on the ground. By the time I threw a saddle on her and threw a leg over, she was like, 'whatever.' Twenty-five years later and she's still with me. I love Ryan's approach, and he shows me I still have things to learn.

I like this horse. He's got a neat personality. At around 18:10-18:30, you can see him wanting to sort of mouth and nibble at Ryan's boot in the stirrup. While mouthing isn't generally a "desirable" trait, I do see the horse is making an effort to soothe himself by mouthing. Ryan had just mentioned that the horse's lips were a little bit pursed. Just a bit of tension in the mouth and jaw. The horse almost immediately nibbles on Ryan's toe. That chewing, mouthing motion helps release that tension in his mouth. He immediately licks and chews and mentally releases some tension about having a rider on his back. I point this out because often people get a little too black and white about the horse's individual behaviors. "I NEVER let my horse eat grass while I'm riding." "I NEVER let my horse nibble on the end of the rope!" "I would correct him for mouthing at your boot." Sometimes we can get so obsessed with correcting things we don't like, that we can miss that the horse is doing his best to relax and process the new information. I really like how Ryan chooses a middle of the road approach by taking everything into consideration, and choosing a moderate response that fits the situation. He's a big picture guy. Well done.

Yeah, I'm a cat guy that recently took some Riding Lessons, and so I was watching closely and was glad when I started hearing "Good Boys". My Pet Peeve about Cats and Cat People is that they don't talk enough with rewarding language, and we all have to kiss our Animals more... they know what that means.

Ryan’s work on this colt is spot on, and his skill with these young horses is exceptional. He is quite right about the first cinch up being very tricky to achieve without a wreck. I am in my seventies now and I no longer ride, but I remember that I was once charged with starting a bunch of unbroken geldings that were 5yo and never been started to saddle. I tell you it was a real circus. After a lot, and I really mean a LOT of ground work, the first feel of the cinch on a few of them made them throw a fit. At the end of it all I owned a destroyed saddle along with other pieces of gear. They turned out OK, but I really learned a lesson in having the horse prepared for the first saddle. Love the channel Ryan, your videos brings back a lot of memories. Greetings to all from Australia 🇦🇺!

Thumbnail and title is kind of click bait -ish. You don't need to use these kind of tactics my friend. Thank you for helping folks become better horse people.

KZfaq's algorithm actually does make silly clickbait titles and thumbnails necessary - not for the humans, but for the algorithm that suggests the video to the humans. The video gets presented to fewer people if it doesn't meet what the algorithm is looking for.

Love this colt. He's a smart and mellow guy. My kind of trail or performance pony. He has a nice way of going, and he's already reaching down and forwards with his head and wanting to use his back better to carry and balance under a rider. Love to see that, especially on a first ride.😊

When handling and asking him to move a long line I like to make a difference or Balance my core body in relationship with his body(broad side to broad side) and when asking a horse to move forward I position my core behind him and when asking to slow or stop I change my core to infront of him. This is 'Horse Speak' they understand very quickly even a horse you've not handled before as horses are the best at reading body language. Remember to manage your feet ànd minimize your movements to reduce possible confusion. Try it and be amazed! Riding and Driving Coach for Connections Boarding Stables Salinas CA

When it comes to the "first ride", most of the folks I follow will get on, then get right back off. The theory being, that the first time on their back is a lot of pressure, and that by immediately getting off let's them know that that pressure will go away. Then they'll call it good, or repeat the process a few more times, before asking for those first few steps. Your thoughts on this please. ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎🐕

Love to watch all of these videos (even though my horses are in their 20's now). But I would love to see a training video on how to handle a seasoned horse that not always responds to "kicking" to move out any more. One of my trail horses was a child's lesson horse for a long time, so he doesn't always respond to kicking to get him in his gait, so I'm trying different things that aren't working. I also have another gaited horse that does what I call his "pony moves", and he stops and refuses to move forward if he wants to say, eat grass or take the trail that he knows goes back to the horse trailer. You could kick him all day long and he won't budge. I think a crop could help(?) but do I tap on the shoulder or butt or neither? (90% of the time he's awesome, but there's that 1%). Thanks...
