We did pretty much the same thing last year minus the sirens. 😂 Since it was our first grounding we were nervous. Did the same preliminary checks as you and all seemed reasonably ok. It was end of season and we were lifting out anyway, so we got a surveyor to come and take a look at everything. Except for a chunk of metal being dug out of the keel bulb (it was pebbly/rocky bottom) and the generator jumping out of place and through a bulkhead (there was previous water damage to the bulkhead, so we had to fix it anyway) , everything else was a ok. Good thing we were going slow. And ours was on the chart and we knew about it... We got distracted looking for an anchoring spot in a busy bay.

I sailed the east coast of Sweden this year - and did not hit anything. But I tied up next to a nice young swedish sailor in one harbor and he reported a Swedish saying similar to yours: “There are 2 types of sailor - those who have hit a rock and those who will. I liked that 😊

$300 for the Navionics subscription, $200 for the new keel paint, Discovering the benefits of having user Navionics user comments on the chart plotter, priceless. Thought I got away without hitting the bottom this season. That was until we hauled the boat out and looked at all the scratches on the front and sides of the keel. Should have called it Ryans rock

Admiral Nimitz (the same that commanded the US Navy during world war 2) ran his destroyer Decatur aground on a mudbank in the Philipines. Unable to get it off he took the advice of his grandfather "do not worry about things over which you have no control" set up a cot on the deck and went to sleep. A steamer appeared after daylight and pulled it off. He was court martialled for "Hazarding a ship of the US Navy" and accepted responsiblity and was given a letter of reprimand - but it obviosuly didn't damage his career too much!

I was in Port Mouton last year and I entered the bay in deep fog, under chart plotter, radar and depth sounder, thank fully I did not hit any rock. A few months later I was less lucky in Guadeloupe where I hit a well marked cay and broke my keel. I ran aground twice in Martinique trying to visit "Les baignoires de Joséphine". I am not afraid to say that I ran aground many times in my sailing carreer. Cheers, Salutations

I’ve definitely had my centerboard skipping off the ground before. It actually took my son and I a second to realize what was happening. I grabbed my laptop and looked at Navionix and was finally able to put 2&2 together. In the grand scheme of boat mistakes, this doesn’t hold a candle to my larger oppsies!

As you're probably not the first owners of the boat and there might have been groundings before plus the gap between the hull and the keel, I'd surely have the bolts checked with X-ray. Stainless Steel is not as stainless as the name suggests and will corrode if contact with salt water is made and there is another metal nearby. Some boats have lost their keels just because the docks in the homeport were of mild steel. Cast iron and Stainless Steel for example will make quite a good battery and as the iron is usually the thicker material the bolts will corrode away. Galvanic current changes the metallurgy inside the bolts where cast iron doesn't have much to change. But I believe you took the right conclusions already as you mentioned the correct step to call a surveyor.

I would add chainplate examination (particularly backstay) to the sage list of checks. Maybe not in your case but the shock of dead stop with the inertia/momentum at the top of the rig puts big loads at rig base - check out the gelcoat for signs of cracking. As to rocks... done that one because a moment's inattention to scale a vector chart for all the available info meant the charted rock was not showing.on the screen at the time - a lot still to be said for paper.
@ende421
@ende421 9 ай бұрын
Very true, vector charts being deceiving! Still scratching my head on why Navionics doesn't show TSSs unless zommed right in. In this particular case: No user provided rocks on paper charts. So ... surprisingly mobile phone Navionics wins here.

The title got me worried. Having seen more than one hull design of that kind separate grid and hull I would hate you going through that, but indeed you were very slow and even lost some more speed at the first gentle touch. It could not have gone any better. Great choice of naming the location. 🙂

So, you’ll want to pull up the floor boards surrounding the keel area and look at the joint where the inner modular grid mates up to the inner surface of the hull. You likely did not suffer any damage on the underside of the hull, but the force of the impact transfers thru the hull and keel to the grid. The skin of the hull is not breached as it ends up flexing, but the energy transfers thru to the grid. That is where that type of construction stresses under a grounding and can develop cracking of the tabs on the modular grid. Not fatal, but will need to be addressed by a boatyard. Definitely need to get all your floorboards pulled up in the salon and look for cracked tabs on the grid. You guys have probably checked into all this by now, but if not, check the grid thoroughly.

The Expedition Evans channel early videos describe their repair of their 2008 Beneteau 49 that was bought at salvage with massive damage to the hull by the previous owner and later totalled by the insurance company. They believed the previous owner was going fast when the rock was hit. Fortunate Ryan said in this video "we weren't going fast at all". It was amazing how much hidden damage the Evans' boat had suffered and it makes one wonder about the Beneteau "grid" design. Suggest you review the hidden damage the Evans found in their repair and then had to fix. Hopefully this didn't happen to Polar Seal. You say "the boat is fine". I hope that is true. But in the Evans' boat's case the damage was subtle but real. Makes one wonder whether hitting a rock that doesn't penetrate the hull should cause such massive damage in a well designed boat.

@@michaelmarcus2318 Our friends bounced off a rock in an anchorage in their 2005 Beneteau 423. They were proceeding at about 1 knot after just weighing anchor. No water intrusion, and ultimately no damage to the underbody of the boat (we proceeded directly to a boatyard and had the boat hauled for inspection). And after lifting floorboards, no evidence of damage to the grid immediately around the keel footprint and keel bolts. But, a few feet outboard, there were cracks at the tabs of the grid where it attaches to the hull is several grid sections. Some of these were only visible if you removed some of the screwed down floor boards. The cracks didn't appear to go all the way thru the tabs, but the tabs were certainly compromised. Fortunately, once hauled for the winter, the insurance company (Boat/US-Geico) and the boatyard agreed on repairs and the cost was covered minus the deductible. They ground out the cracks, layered up new glass, and then gel-coated those entire sections. The boat now is stronger than when it came from the factory. The structural grid approach is not necessarily a bad thing as many boats are traveling the globe with that type of construction, including Ryan and Sophie, and it allows for cost efficiencies in manufacture. But, if you hit something, the damage will materialize differently, may be harder to find and more complicated to fix. And one could also argue that traditionally framed boats could withstand a "slow motion grounding" without damage whereas gird-framed boats may be more susceptible to damage at slow speed impacts.

I've hit bottom three times too. All muddy groundings. The first and worse was during delivery of my own boat. Worse because speed was about 5 knots, and we had to be towed out. The other two times I used the jib to rock the boat and widen the mud hole and motored out. It happens. These were due to not updated charts, and after heavy storms. Just paint off the keel, no other damage. Stuff happens. Fair winds.

Check your frame to hull joints. Probably good. It's just that Beneteau and Jeanneau glue their frames to the hull. Expedition Evans bought a 50' Beneteau that had a very bad keel strike, yanked the frame hull joint. (It all worked out. They got the boat for $25k! and had to do a lot of fixing. ) "One day it may happen to you..." Last week while heading out of the harbor I saw both Boat US tow boats each towing a boat. Wished them a silent best of luck and thought, someday that'll be me...

A not fun grounding, on a loopy friend’s Macwester 27 Bilge Keeler. Friend loopy ecause he Never listened. sigh.We had been out for the day from the Estuary he moored at, which had a very tricky Channel out into the Bay, on leaving, sand dunes to starboard with a sandbar right on the edge of the channel.Well he grounded on the Bar on the way out, so perhaps should have told him to go back to the mooring after towing him off with the Dinghy. Ho Hum, we Continued out, and I noticed there was something wrong with the Port side Channel Marker Buoys next to the large amount of Rocks, and at least one of the Buoys was missing. I commented that the Buoys weren’t right, and that on our return at Full Tide, I’d take the Dinghy in First to check them out. Which I did, and found that the last two were missing, so back on the boat, we headed in, and I explained when you get near the last visible Buoy, Slow Right down and Turn to Port . Response Eh ? Instant Repeat . Eh ? We are doing 5+ knots with the Tide behind us and those damned Marker buoys are running Out Fast, so at the top of my Voice I Shout Slow Down and Turn to Port ! Crash bang wallop , Mast Bends like a Bow, and crash bang wallop still not slowed Dow, we keep going until we run out of Rocks to collide with. I look below, grab Life Jackets and go below to check for leaks, He finally Slows down and we get to the Mooring, then wait for low Tide to check for damage. There was a small chip in the Gel Coat on each Bilge Keel, which I cleaned with acetone, and used some Gel Coat repair stuff on, then we went to the Pub. The Owner was a really nice guy but so bloody Clueless. Still, I suppose the Bulk of the “Don’t Do That “ Things on Boats I learned while Crewing for him. Never have an underpowered inboard engine, him getting us stuck for hours in Overfalls. Always have your engine and gearbox fully serviced, and regularly check the Stuffing box. Him, after having to push his boat with my Dinghy lashed to the side all the way up the coast to another friend’s mooring he had the use of for the Summer, as the engine died just as we left the Bay where the estuary e moored up was. Not a Breath of wind it was a millpond and a scircher of a day. It took 3 refills of the internal tank of my 3.3 Hp Tohatsu 2 stroke, to do a bit over 40 miles. We rolled into the Mooring, only to find out that he had booked us in at our Harbour Master friend’s Restaurant for lunch S he had said we’d be there by mid day at the latest, but it was about 7pm when we rolled in, after being welcomed by our friends on the Lifeboat, after a bit of a telling off, all he could say was Eh ? Ex Merchant Navy he knew it all, but just like Manuel in Fawlty Towers He Knows Nuuu Theeeng. Lovely guy though, a self made millionare three times, but three wives took him to the cleaners. One Demonic Darkside almost wife, was enough for me. Happy Days ! Bob.🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧⛵️🌟🌟🌟❤️

Hi … your videos are amazing. It’s really inspiring for me and my GF … planning to spend our first few years after retirement as live-aboard (still 10 years to go though). Question: I heard that starlink is charging a lot of money to sailors because they discontinued their RV plan (or they do not allow boats) and basically have only a marine service tailored to super-yachts … is it true? Has Elon finaa sad lot realized that not all sailors are billionaires? And in fact sailors-Tubers give a lot of good press to his company??? Why penalizing them … in any case I don’t think that the data rate generated by sailing yachts will break the bank and bring down his network … can you comment?
