Ryobi's new USB lithium 4v line is all the rage lately but! The flexibility of charging is a great perk but how do you know which is good or bad? In this video we will talk about a common charger and what you can expect for charging times.

Ryobi really missed the mark on this line of tools. even on the HD web site you can see multiple inquiries of the same question I had. which was: It has a USB "C" port. Can you also use that port to use the battery as a bank to charge a phone? The answer is apparently "no". Would have been soooooo much more marketable and sold soooooo many more batteries.

@@Hoosker Great news. Thanks for the tip. I just looked that up. I figured they would come around. And, while looking I noticed they have made a 1/4" and 3/8" ratchet. Going to have to sell my Milwaukee Fuel.

The batteries that "flow both ways" in other words, can be used as a charging bank have the little green button to check battery level. They still sell the "dumb" batteries. So make sure to get the ones with the green button@@jldude84

@@Hoosker Make sure it has the battery test button (shows what the battery level is). Those can be used to charge your phone. I carry one on me now as a "emergency" back up for when I'm at work and theres no where to plug up to.

2 hour charge means its filling up at ~4Whr / hr. That means any 5V 1A charger (think the tiny iphone charging cubes) is good enough to get the max charging rate.

Great video, Fyi... also, the length of the cord and the gauge of the wire inside the cord dramatically impact charge time. When using fast chargers, use the high curren USB type cor, designated by a purple or blue plastic key instead of the white key. Thanks for the videos.

Depending upon which charger block I use the indicator light either flashes slow or rapidly. I haven't figured out which one's better. I opt for the slower flash

The max power that can be delivered though Lightning is 32 watts with an Apple lightning to usb c cable. You can use up to a 240 watt charger on a lightning iPhone and the phone will charge safely as it limits the power so it won't burn itself down. All members of the iPhone 15 lineup (15, 15 plus, 15 pro, 15 pro max) use usb c and can handle up to 60 watts.

These types of batteries have all kinds of protection such as over current and over voltage protection. As per de usb standard a charger should always start negotiating voltage starting from 5V

Have you tried charging the battery from a battery? Either the 18v or 40v Ryobi usb chargers. It doesn’t make sense to charge up or across (18v to 40v or 18v to 18v), but what about downwards? (40 to 18v etc.)

I charge my USB lithium batteries with a 96 watt MacBook Pro charger. The cable that came with my Mac supports up to 94 watts of power delivery. The new (braided USB C Apple cables and MagSafe 3 support up to 240 watts).

Personally I like Ryobi stuff for my home use but this is kinda sad in 2022. 5W charging for a brand new battery platform in 2022 is weak sauce. They may use a USB C port but they’re not taking advantage of any of the benefits that port provides. How fast will it charge in any of the Ryobi cradle drive chargers?

I tried to buy the ryobi bike pump today they don't have them yet need one for my electric bike tires maybe you can help me buy one I pick up the flashlight USB today wait ING for it to come in but the pump USB can't get it yet please help me thank you !!!!!!

Your video was just what I was looking for. The only thing you left out is showing the other end of the USB cable. I used a Samsung 10 plus phone plug that has that oval shape to it. Seems to work fine. I have a small Ryobi hand drill. Could you also show the Ryobi hand drill when you're using it to screw wood screws into wood and how to do it so you don't burn out your small Ryobi hand drill. I've noticed that it will stop and shut off and you have to turn it back on again during the process of putting the wood screw in the wood.. Thank you!

@susansammi17 The RYOBI USB 4v volt screwdriver has a charge indicator led light near/at the bottom of its handle, the light will turn green indicating the battery has a sufficient charge, or it turns red indicating that the battery charge is getting lower,, also, the LED light will signal RED if it goes overtorque and the tool will stop working until the red light goes off, and the trigger released free. this’s a normal situation, and that is just an over-load protection .

The input is limited to around 5 watts it seems when using USB.

If it’s true 2amp then a “1c” charge rate would be 2amps which would take approx 1 hour to charge so if it took 2 hours then I would presume it was charging at 1amp. Which is really safe as it’s half the “C” rating.

Basically what your experiment shows is that it's not going to charge any faster than those typical 1amp block chargers since the battery dictates the charging rate allowed into the device.

At Home Depot tonight I noticed a Ryobi three 2v battery USB charger. I am thinking that that is going to be quite a bit faster.

Perhaps but will charge only one battery at a time. Placing three drain battery's in, will only charge the first and the other's must wait there turn.
