27:38 the Colliseum was built on the place of an artificial lake in the center of Nero's palace complex. As such, the arena was able to be flooded, and used for naval shows and combat. Those docks could be used to store the props of said battles.

The thing with Damocles is what makes me the most angry. It appears someone literally remembered there was such a thing as a sword of Damocles and then just assumed he was a warrior. The actual Damocles of the anecdote would have been a greek courtier to Dionysus II of Syracuse

The problem with this game isn't that it has bad history, it's that the history isn't bad enough. This could work if they put effort into making it ridiculous to the point that it was funny instead of painful.

It really seems like if they hadn't gone after Oswald, then things would have gone much better for Rome. After all, if Oswald hadn't been captured, then his other soldiers wouldn't have bothered to get off their arses and actually attack. Oswald was cool with just going for peace, but everyone else just said "screw that guy" and attacked, when they had no way of knowing that peace wasn't going to work. I also love the clear contrast between games like Assassin's Creed, which do massive amounts of research (with a team of multicultural faiths and beliefs), and this, which just sort of says "screw it, I've seen Gladiator, I know what Rome should look and be like".

People were nailing poor souls to trees long before the Romans came along, although it's the Latin phrase that has stuck (that's not an intentional pun!). Arbori suspendere. Horrific way to go. Either your organs give out from lack of fluids, or you slowly suffocate to death (eventually your body doesn't have the strength to provide the movement needed for breathing, which is why leg breaking was seen as being "merciful". It skips you straight to that point). Barbarism at it's worst. Semi interesting aside: Arnold Schwarzenegger's punishment in Conan may be more historically accurate than the "unflinching but honest" crucifixion in Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ. Ho hum.

Wouldn't it make more sense for that goddess to be Minerva? I mean she would appear to many different heroes, and by extension probably Marius. In addition, she was the goddess of war, giving her another connection to the Centurion Marius, and part of the Capotiline Triad, and I mean at least one of them three ought to be in the game right? And I mean she is probably just hot because... well.... fan service.

For a clasicist you're calling them Scots a lot despite Scots being Irish. At this nebulous point in history they'd be Picts, the Gaels (which is the tribe the romans called Scoti) where still in Ireland at this point. Dal Riata wasn't even untill the 6th century, there were absolutely no Scots in Scotland in any period this could take place.

So Jon said "there isn't any bears in Britain!!!" So I had to look it up. And apparently while there was a very very small amount of native bears after the last Ice Age they were still around.. But most of the bears in England now were actually imported from A.D. 43 to the 20th centuary. used for betting and entertainment. as well as breeding for products such as Bear Grease etc. So probably quite a few had escaped from captivity... But a Bloke in a Bear Rug coat would of still been possible... just WHY would you wear something so expensive, rare, and possible flammable to a battle with lots of fire? This game makes me laugh everytime..

No the 'British' Celts didn't have bears, but I think that's a very Romanesque way of thinking, because the Celts had a system of roads, some of which the Romans built on top of Celtic roads, plus the Celtic tribes are known to have traded with each other including tribes from mainland Europe. Plus they could have been trophies from slain Romans. So it's not impossible for bear skins to have reached these shores. Though it would have made more sense if they had been wolf pelts.

Surely a large amount written about Roman Emperors was written after their death, often generations afterwards, by scribes paid for by those Emperors successors, often a different bloodline, trying to paint them in a bad light to justify their own succession as a time of great peace and prosperity, and to show they weren't anywhere near as bad as those that came before them, just look how awful those people were.
