The tar road we travelled on from Tweespruit to Hobhouse in the Free State was in dreadful condition, leaving us relieved when we opted for the gravel road, which proved to be in better shape, albeit a slight detour. Gravel roads are still very much a preference of ours. Upon reaching the Awimaweh Resort, we were pleased to find it in excellent condition. As we arrived in Hobhouse, we realised that it was exactly as we had anticipated - tranquil and quaint. Exploring the town by car was a delightful experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #

The Basotho herders used to wear 100% pure wool blankets. In winter to keep them warm and in summer to keep the heat out. That's why some are still wearing them day or night.

Thats exactly how I remember the old school. I was in primary school in Welkom and we attended st5 Veldskool at Hophouse in 1981. We slept in the empty classrooms. Those days were about 8-10 local children that attended the school. We also climbed the koppie at the back. Thanks for the memories, Sonja and Curtis

Hi you two! Blue skies, gravel roads, flatlands with rocky mountains on the horizon ... no end to it! Thank you for this visit to Hobhouse. It seems to be more quiet on Sunday than it probably is during the week. It surely is a peaceful place however. It looks like the town is weakening but the people living there are surely there because they want to, and will keep it going. To see so many Willow trees was very special. Your drone view early in the video again made my day. Keep going, and keep safe until next next time!

What a small town and like Sonja commented it is amazing that they still survive and on the map. But then the history around Hobhouse is worth more than what money can buy. Thanks guys well done and a very pleasat trip. Till the next one where i will be onboard

"Sitting on a gravel road, listening to the silence" sounds like a great way to spend an hour or two. Can't find anywhere here in England to do that...

Must have been a beautiful and vibrant town once. Sad to see the state of it now. One small example of what is happening to once beautiful towns and cities all over South Africa.

Hi guys another gem with a name the towns folk are very proud of. It shows how far forward these small towns were back in the day with the selection of shops municipal swimming pools .lovely clean church and amazing bust of Emily Hobhouse love these small towns. Luckily my daughter treated me to some biltong from the south African shop in London (savanna) so sat and grazed while watching. Thank you Curtis and Sonia for a wonderful video and thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

The visit to Hobhouse was lovely. Driving through the Free State is so fantastic. I know exacetly what you feel when you stop on a quiet road and listen to the silence. It is magical. Thank you. The school buildings in Hobhouse are excellent and for all South African children to benefit from.

Another fave place. Looks a bit more run down since I was last there. But it's named after my heroine from history. Emily stripped off her own petticoat and gave it to a woman who had no clothes. I am so enjoying the beautiful free state, especially here in eastern free state the scenery is very lovely. Thankyou for an awesome tour

Once again, I love watching your travels, it's a peaceful place, but maybe a bit too quiet to live in. What I find fascinating, is how mother nature slowly reclaims her territory again, once human beings leave (old buildings / swimming bath etc) and puts things back the way she wanted it and intended it in the first place.

When I first watched your videos, I thought your choice of places was strange!😅😅 After a while, I started enjoying them, and actually realized your travels are the best, especially in these times of millions of youtubers, who are congesting tourist attractions and bumping into everyone. 😅😅

Hey, I used to swim in that pool! 😂 Back pre 1997 that school was the "Buitelug skool". Place where other schools took their students for a week to learn some outdoor skills, teamwork and to explore nature. They also maintained the pool and some other structures/farms in the area. Used to have old Ox-wagons parked there in the school courtyard. Town looked way more vibrant back then though. I was "produced" in one of those dilapidated buildings you drove past 😅 Want to go back one day to see if my hidden cache is still there in the mountain where I hid it 😂

I went to Babanango a very long time ago. I was walking from a parking spot to a restaurant there, when all of a sudden a giant Great Dane, a little bit taller than me (but maybe not as tall as this tale) came up to me, seized my hand in his enormous jaws - OK, very gently, but still ... - and led me off to a bar, instead, full of Zulu War memorabilia, and stuff left over from the set of the film, Zulu Dawn, instead. You may have heard of him?
