Season 3 Episode 7. Jimbo installs an intercooler on the turbocharged Kubota D722 diesel engine in the Saturn coupe. Will the intercooler make a difference? Also Jimbo bumps up the boost from 8 psi to 10 psi... because MOOR BOOST! As a special treat Jimbo compares the Saturn's acceleration to a Trabant that is owned by another youtube creator.
Check out the Aging Wheels episode where the Trabant is tested

I think it's worth stating, lower intake temps will primarily serve to lower egts less than make more power. The intercooler probably gives you more room to increase the fueling before egts get crazy.
@johnnyzander1466
@johnnyzander1466 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Just fitting an intercooler does nothing more than lower intake and exhaust temps. Then you increase fuel and turbo pressure until the intercooler doesn't help anymore. Then you mount a larger one. And then more boost, and then... This is called the ''more boost'' syndrome. 😂
@rydplrs71
@rydplrs71 Жыл бұрын
On 2-stroke race engines it’s 15-20 degrees IAT per jet size. That makes a significant change in power output. Fuel does need to increase, but lower intake temperatures are the equivalent of more boost.

The WRX hood scoop has been shown to flow backwards at higher speeds. Generally, your engine bay ends up being a high pressure area. A forwards facing scoop means you don't have much delta in pressure across the top mounted intercooler. Now, your front bumper block will change the flow/pressure characteristics but the important thing is to maximize the pressure and temp deltas across your IC. Like many of the high performance WRX builds which kept their TMIC you likely want to go for a reverse scoop setup. - Additionally, the lack of a belly pan will alter your engine bay airflow and pressure characteristics. Typically, in a negative way. Plus there's additional aero drag from the aerodynamically dirtiest part of the car (the underside). Likely an easy way to make multiple improvements. The guides on ecomodder can be helpful. Same for tuft-testing the airflow around that TMIC which is a great way of showing your airflow patterns at various speeds. --- Keep up the very interesting work!

Came here for this. Make a scoop that looks like the old Camero cold air induction that faces the window. After about 35 MPH the air over the hood will get pushed down that intercooler.
@randr10
@randr10 Жыл бұрын
Louvres would work for this purpose then and he wouldn't have to change his aero at all that way. As was discussed at length in his aero mod video, it's hard to modify the aero on a slippery car like the SC and actually improve it. Louvre the existing piece and weld it back into place if you're going to go that route IMO.

You should for sure add a small WRX style hood scoop, it might not be your "style," but I think it would look cool and increase the efficiency of that. You could also add some little pieces of plastic inside to guide the air directly atop the intercooler. I do recommend adding a little more fuel now, I think that engine can handle it. Then again, I feel like swapping that engine into the insight would be ideal at this point.

Some more test ideas. Attach some streamers around the hood hole/intercooler, I wager air is coming out not into the hole/intercooler. That tube and fin intercooler needs airflow across the core. A bar and plate style core would be better suited for that style as its much better at passively rejecting heat since your hood is vented allowing air out. Plus less pressure drop across the core with bar and plate. (not sure where your measuring boost from). in order for a hood sccop to actually work and create a high pressure area to promote flow. the underhood area would need to be low pressure so blocking the grill may be benefitial in that scenario. Happy testing!
@ElPants21
@ElPants21 Жыл бұрын
Guessing the air direction is tough because right in front of the windshield tends to be a high pressure area, but so does the engine bay. I'd wager not much air is moving at all and it really needs a scoop and some simple ducting
@ProDigit80
@ProDigit80 Жыл бұрын
@robert rochacz easy to see with some sticky notes or paper ribbons with tape. I would have probably suggested to have the scoop exit air instead of force it in the hood, but that could be an issue if the engine ever has a problem (smoke). So forced in is the only way, or close up the bonnet again, and use case fans.
@nickmcwilliams685
@nickmcwilliams685 Жыл бұрын
@robert rochacz yeah Subaru has a shroud on the hood that seals to the intercooler and deliberately open space around the transmission and firewall to allow air to go down unfer the car. The air flowing under the car and seal from the scope to intercooler really aids pulling air through the intercooler. Raising the cooler up into the cut out and sealing it to the hood might be a simple way to improve its function. Blocking off more of the front of the car should lower the pressure under the hood and might make it try and draw more through the hood also.

Another way to optimize the hole in the hood for the intercooler is to extend the vertical cuts and bend the leading edge of the hole down into the engine bay. The boundary layer of the air on the hood will better follow that path and get more air into the engine bay and over the intercooler. As you said, a scoop is better but until then this is a simple way to improve the hole as-is. Right now most the air is flying over half the opening of the hole and missing the intercooler, the benefit you are seeing is just allowing the surrounding cooler air into the lower pressure area in the hood.

There is a risk that your intercooler becomes "interwarmer", as hi pressure air from your front dam enters engine compartment, and escapes through scoop. OEM's usually mount intercooler in sandwich with radiator. IC first, then radiator. In this case, I assume that you can do the same and solve two problems: IC will be getting cold air first and radiator will have somewhat less air flow (which would take care of thermostat not being able to regulate). Then pile up more fuel and you will be getting places! P.S. That rear bearing is annoying...we want to hear the turbo! :D Great content!

You should also try a reverse hood scoop (hole facing backwards) If the hole in the bumper creates higher than ambient pressure in the engine bay (which is hard to say, aero is fickle), a scoop will only fight the hole in the bumper decreasing air flow through the intercooler. If the scoop is reversed however, it creates a low pressure area in front of the windscreen, pulling air through the intercooler. Again, this only works if the bumper hole is indeed increasing the air pressure.

its nice to see how little power you really need to counter coefficient drag unlike what car sellers would have you believe

True, but keep in mind this car is driven on flat roads. Once you start climbing hills thats when you need a lot more power.

Love this series! It will be interesting to see how far this engine will go. I think, being a diesel, it will take quite a bit. Hopefully it can take around 15psi, doubling it's naturally aspirated output. At this power level, intercooling just doesn't make a noteable power difference, but as the boost increases it will play more and more of a role. A general rule of thumb I found is ~1% more power for every 10 degrees F. More than anything, the intercooler will lower exhaust temps. Maybe this will allow you to get more aggresive with fueling. Gasoline engines can respond much better to lower temps because of increased ignition timing with lower IAT when octane limited. Would be interesting to have a instant reading on intake temps. I think it would tell a better story of how the intercooler is doing. Edit: I see the the lower EGT and added fueling idea has been mentioned a few times!

Intercoolers really only make a huge difference when you're making big boost. Compressed air creates it's own heat by virtue of the compression - that's what they really help with. Removing any heat added by the turbo itself is only going to be an issue when you've driven the car long enough for the cold side to be heat soaked by the hot side of the compressor - so on short test drives it's nearly a moot point. I'm not saying that the turbo doesn't help with temps either way - just the temps won't be different enough to noticeably help power until your dealing with higher boost numbers.

I run 12psi on my originally non turbo Kubota tractor. It's a tractor so it can go quite a while holding 12psi. It does have an intercooler.

Keep in mind the trabant has a gasoline 2 stroke engine, giving it two advantages. Gas burns faster than diesel, and twice as many power strokes for a given size engine yields more power to weight
