We also share a Portofino 52 Update with a walkthrough the inside of both hulls and share more details about the difference between most performance catamarans and why the hull design is so ikmnprotant for comfort AND safety!
We also share a real life medical situation for a sailing couple that was devastated by crippling anxiety and turned to TUFMINDS to find solutions. We share the crippling negative thoughts that prevented living her dream, the steps that the person took to recover and some scary facts about how common negative thoughts are in everyone's head! Fortunately there is a solution that is FREE and has no drug side effects!!! Share this episode with any friends or colleagues that suffer from anxiety - as it may just change their life!

John & Eli: Turkey was absolutely breath taking, Love these quaint country village's and the location from your tender, over the Hill, was marvelous. Our youngest son David, graduate of Husson College with a MBA, has had another relapse after his unfortunate divorce. He continues with his medication which Catherine his Med Provider has scheduled weekly and a therapist for anxiety. My wife and I are beyond desperation at the moment as David was admitted to FUTURES in Palm Beach, Florida for drug (authorized medication) overdose. We are blessed that both are helping relieve those in need of mental health help. Thank you both so much. The new boat really is taking shape, she will be positively lovely. A July launching looks in order.

Dear David, So sorry to hear about your son's suffering and we know how it feels when your children are in pain. Of course, as a parent we always want to help our children and we often seem to be helpless. However, Eli and I are happy to offer our services to compliment the existing services he is receiving to provide another angle to his treatment and his internal struggle (if he is willing to chat to us). You can email us on drjohnmcintosh@tpg.com.au to discuss things privately and see how we can move forward... If he wants to see what we do and what we are like, he can see us on the "TUFMINDS app" if he has any doubts and the "Suicide Crisis Module" would be interesting for him to see at this point too! Hope to hear from you soon, John and Eli

Looking good however she is a performance cruiser looking from the volume inside. Having a flared hull increases your internal volume but does not increase your payload. She is still going to preform very well and is a solid build. Building in aluminum takes more time and its a labor of love. All hull materials have their advantages and disadvantage. Thanks for the update.

Thanks Carlos and you are right about the volume increase without payload increase but at least we will be able to able to make the beds and put our cups of coffee alongside our beds! It does actually make the boat much more lovable in many ways.

I would prefer Plastic fuel tanks as ironically I have both Aluminium diesel tanks develop pin hole leaks and have had to take them out again and have pieces welded over the holes. This happened after 12 years of usage. This was on my gen2 leopard cat. Even Leopard now fit polypropylenefuel tanks which is a big step forward as well as polypropylene black and grey water tanks. There have have been so many you tube channels that have had to repair aluminium diesel tanks over the years.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 5 ай бұрын
Hi Mike. Yes that is correct that aluminium tanks can and will corrode depending on the circumstances. I had Alum diesel tanks in my 42 foot boat that I built and the cause of the pin holes in that was from dirt and debris under the tanks that had flakes of rust or other bits of metal for other work that was being done in that area... I suspect that the other boats would have similar reasons for the pin holes and we certainly expect that as these tanks are integral there will be no metal contact on the outside surfaces and we are obligated to the inside bilges all free of debris to avoid any rust / electrolysis. The plastic tanks also get holes and have to be replaced too but that is cheaper and usually easier... The large inspection hatches int eh tanks also allow us to check the tanks regularly and if they need to be fixed, we can access them. There is also the possibility of epoxy coating the surfaces.

So a great episode, There is no chance it will be ready, but I hope I am wrong. Kas is a lovely place, too many Russians, but still good. The marina is a shocking price, the staff are nice, but the management is going to destroy it by raising the price too much. One other tip is that after dusk once the yard boys leave, then you can bring your dinghy to the dock. We were up against the dockside for 1 week getting our engine mounts changed and each night at dusk there would be a flotilla of dinghies coming in to the dock.

Windelo also has a transverse bed, but aft on the owners side. By the size of the Portfino team i would hope they can have it ready to splash in ten months. A lot depends on the wiring plumbing and trimming out teams... and what you chose as a finish...raw metal would save time and paint. But your going to need a cool under foot decksurface .. seacork? Or something synthetic.

So far you have not brought out battery compartment and lithium ion battery fires and measures to put out such fires. You may consider isolating the batteries in a special fire proof compartment or have the ability to flood such compartment with retardant or water so that fire is suppressed.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 5 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for the comment and we will discuss the batteries in the future. From what I have seen when the lithium car batteries ignite, the fire is so intense it cannot be put out until it burns out but there are varieties of lithium batteries that do not burn, even if pierced (apparently) so we are certainly going to be looking into safer batteries and will have fire systems as well...

Hi Dale, it is difficult to review a boat that has not been completed yet, is being produced too far away to pop in and it took us a year and 3 visits to Dubai to be happy with the skill and quality finishes that Portofino does before committing to have our 52 built. Email me on drjohnmcintosh@tpg.com.au and share details about what you are looking for and I can give you some feedback on the pros and cons for you as I know them at present.

Would it be accurate to say this is an aluminum lagoon with respect to volume/length ratio?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 5 ай бұрын
Far from it... The hulls are very narrow and shallow (2.5 foot draft) and the polars predict sailing at wind speed (or close to wind speed up to about 15 knots and then able to reach 20knots if you keep the sails up.... It is much lighter than Lagoons, even of shorter length. Check out the performance video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prmYnZqU2q3Lk2Q.html

Motorcycle engine parts have also been known to dissolve erode in strong solutions of washing machine powder or liquid. 🤦🏻‍♂️....😬😖😂 Malcolm from Ogri made that mistake. @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Aluminum is a horrible choice for a sewage holding tank since urine is so corrosive. I recently became aware of the issue when I had to repair my friends 38' aluminum catamaran that is only 5 years old. The corner of the tank developed a leak and he asked me to come and weld it up. We drained and washed out the tank a dozen times and I couldn't get the aluminum to seal up because of the corrosion inside of the tank. The welds were affected more by the corrosion. I ended up doing a bunch of research and that is when I found out aluminum should not be used for sewage.

@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 5 ай бұрын
Hi Ann, thanks for the comment and interest. Neuroticism is more of a personality type than a diagnosis and usually refers to folk who are reacting to issues that are not serious. The risk storms, harm, lightning and dragging are all very real so a sailor with those fears is reasonable but when it interferes with daily function it becomes a "problem" which may need to be treated. Obviously getting the relative risk back into place is important as if it gets worse it can become a phobia or affect overall mood and sink into depression. Neurotic behaviours also are much better off if they are managed with the TUFMINDS principles as are anyone with anxiety, stress, depression and PTSD... It's only semantics but anyone with a problem that interferes with their daily life needs help.

They are fitting quite powerful Diesel engines and aim to run them at reduced load. 2 episodes back. With large solar to take care of the house load and quiet life at anchor. They can always convert further in the future when the battery tech has improved and the cost drops. I might be looking at fitting BYD blade batteries as a start for the house power and having added space available for expansion into propulsion and new gen. Compact generators for hybrid electric power later.

Yes we will have 80hp Yanmars with DC generators as the electric engines even with 40KW of battery will only push us 20nm before they go flat - so what's the point? We are hoping that the electric engines will improve over this year but the weight, cost and limited benefit are looking like a waste of time except for prestige value!!!

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 I understand you're basis for you're choice im still chuckling from seeing your trailer sailor virtually plaining as you had to beat the border lockdown..😂 Its not the electric motors that sets the power or endurance limit it's the Stored energy capacity on the whole vessel and other forms of re/generation available night and day whilst underway and at anchor. Hybrids are currently eminently feasible being more fuel efficient than most direct systems.... the Edison motors Topsey is a 80-100 ton load, on and off road logging truck that utilizes this principle out in BC Canada's remote forest sites... and several Oxygen cats, Elan and Spirit yatchs use the hybrid principle where the ICE motor/generator only ever runs at its Stoichiometric optimum so the battery pack can be smaller and lighter and the main/back up energy is still stored as energy dence liquid fuel ... Whatever form that takes, Mineral Diesel, Bio derve, Synthetic derv Methanol, LNG, Hydrogen etc as its only running at one speed range and load multifuel adaptations easier to do. Unlike historically as used on military vehicles.. Where it scores advantages over direct driven is a 20-30% Fuel saving , cleaner running and less wear ..also assuming many times you avoid short motor runs (less than 3 hrs) and the need to run the engine under variable loads manouvering, you also get to junk a load of redundant wt. and complication.. Clutches gearboxes complex heat exchangers exhausts etc .. the ICE motor isnt directly connected as its just the generators that can run the electric motors direct or top up the batteries. Auto Battery packs and chemistries are undergoing a massive change .. with Several boat companies using whole Merc, BMW or VW packs .. Nio got a mention because they build vehicles and lease their packs through their automated battery swap stations. The latest version has a 1000k range in the cars but naturally thats an expensive pack ... The electric hybrid system doesnt need that much stored power on a yacht as it can top up from solar, wind generators ... pretty puny as they are and loaded with drawbacks ... but the big hybrid sailing trick is regen under sail .. Which is how sailing Uma and Windelo's all benefit from where the propulsion system becomes hydro generators. Prop design and software tuning are the bits where some companies are scratching their heads at the moment. Probably 80% of solar Electrical and definately battery tech is produced in China and even more of the research is being done their... that may or may not be a problem but they are also building whole boats, ships and supplying a lot of the rest of the worlds manufacturers with their own branded parts as Edison motors found early on. Interesting times.🧙‍♂️

You obviously are well up on all the new directions, Clive! We are planning to get region in some way to top up our batteries under way but at present all hybrids rely on generators (diesel usually) to make the power as their batteries only run for a short time. Even Uma really struggles with range so they have to seriously compromise when they turn on their engine and how fast they motor... The beta marine engines the Wynns and HH use are old fashioned basic Kubotas that are terrible for emissions (not acceptable standards for the EU) so they think they are being eco friendly but are pumping out fumes at levels that are not acceptable! Ironically neither engines work well as they can only motor at 5.3 knots... Things are progressing fast but we do not see a practical electric engine yet with the closest one being the Hybrid Marine that can be added to the Yanmars but the benefit does not match the price and weight (2 hours motoring...) If anything provides effectively solutions on the electric motor side, please let me know.
