Song is much more powerfull when you know it's background. Well done Sabaton! Guy entered Auschwitz on purpose because no one believed what was happening there, collected secret documents and evidence, escaped, handed the documents to his government, wasn't believed, continued to fight in a war, and then was executed by USSR.

it's a little shame that Sabaton don't have more anti-soviet songs considering the fact that soviets were in some moments worse than nazis and stories like Katyn massacre should be great to write a song about. But they have a strong fanbase and profit in Russia so criticizing soviets is a death sentence for them I guess... From what I remember russians were already pissed at songs like Wehrmacht so song about Katyn massacre would end up really badly for them which is sad.

Here's a good one for the importance of music: I never heard of Witold until I heard this song, and then I wrote an essay about him for a competition here in Ireland. I won, ended up at the National Holocaust Memorial event in Dublin and got to meet our President, Michael D. Higgins. All because of Sabaton!!

This absolute madman didn't even break sweat when communists pulled his nails out. He was smiling death in the face during the trial, despite knowing he's gonna get killed. All this because of concern for his wife. Imagine... Being tortured, beaten, starved, having your nails pulled out and still keeping straight face and being worried about your loved one

The recovery took like 15 years. 15 years to fully convert into free market democracy and capitalism. But even when the economy finally switched and started to bloom, communism left deep scar in Our society and mentality. It will take another few decades to fully heal

Schools never teach such things unfortunately... Not even universities. In my country, we only do about political and social history. We literally never talk about the wars and the battles our soldiers fought, where they fought, who and why they fought... Military history isn't a thing in my country's schools. Teens don't know about their ancestors and they never bother to learn. They don't care. It's sad...

I was thinking of posting about actual Hollywood-type films, and your post suggests now is the time. I am probably the #1 fan of Martin Kosleck and created a Facebook tribute to him. In the research, I've learned a number of sad points, one of which is that films that showed Resistance heroes in various countries often were suppressed from American public after WWII because they might foster sympathy for Soviets, similar to suppressing info about heroism & compassion from individuals on the Axis side. Kosleck portrayed especially vicious Nazis in many such films. He was a Jew and Gay, and he despised Nazis so much, he eagerly acted his nastiest as his contribution to their defeat. He had escaped a SS death order for treason when he came to North America, issued because he spoke against fascists while performing on stage & screen in Berlin. Some Jews in America condemned him and his few peers for taking on such roles, even criticizing off-screen great Fritz Lang. War is hell & more complex than we might know. Kosleck is a different kind of hero than these terrific Sabaton songs commemorate, but he risked his life and paid for his choices by never quite getting more recognition. If you think onscreen violence requires scenes of realistic torture, check out how effective this slightly-built actor gut-punches the viewer through voice & shadows & sounds without showing beatings, etc. And consider that real people did suffer at the hands of the monsters he portrayed.

@@byali4360 Mainly in the 80s and 90s, but even today, it's very common in Hollywood action movies, that us Germans or the Soviets are the bad guys. I don't blame them, Nazis did their best to be the prototype of a villain. But therefore, a Story were the Nazis AND the Soviets were the villains, shouldn't be a problem. But maybe you're still right, the hero does not fit into the typical Hollywood template. Sad.

Hollywood actually wanted to make a movie about him, but there was a catch. They wanted to make a jew out of him (he was christian), to show a story of heroic, brave jews. Beacuse of that, the family declined the propposition.

They even included Germans who changed views or were working against the Reich all along. During the War, the effort was to win diverse support. I haven't noticed them being concerned about the faiths of the Resistance individuals. What a pointless & biased choice the movie people made!

Accidentally ran into a documentary about this man on tv and man that was a name I remembered forever. The story is amazing and this man was a literal embodiment of courage, intelligence, patriotism and perseverance. Glory to you Vitold Pilecki, may your name never be forgotten.

Witold Pilecki was a hero who DELIBERATELY got himself sent to Auschwitz in order to destroy it from within. While he didn't succeed, he organised a resistance movement inside the camp and managed to escape to bring information about it to the outside world. Sadly, he wasn't believed at the time, since his stories seemed exaggerated (and this wasn't an unreasonable response, little hard evidence of the camps' true purpose came to light before the last days of the war and even the people who were fighting the Axis couldn't believe the Nazis were THAT evil). The real tragedy is that after the war, the Polish Communist puppet government convicted him of "foreign imperialism" for working with the London-based Polish Government In Exile and executed him after a show trial. God Bless him, and may He rest in eternal joy and peace for his superhuman sacrifice.

Polish heroism is truly hard to believe until you discover enough of it. Then you start to wonder why other nations didn't measure up. I'm sometimes ashamed of my own country because we didn't do enough. I wish we did more to aid Poland.

@@reliantncc1864 The part that grinds my gears about history is the fact that if not for Stalin sticking his ugly nose in everything in Eastern Europe, Poland would likely have repulsed Germany in the initial invasion. Were things bad for Poland? yes. Would Poland have given up? Look at the song Uprising and try to tell me Polish citizens wouldn't fight to liberate their homeland.

@@airplanemaniacgaming7877 Hm, I'm close to agreeing with you, but not quite. I don't think Poland stood a chance against Germany in the initial invasion. No one did. France had a far greater military than Poland, and they went down almost as fast. Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, even Britain couldn't stand up against the Wehrmacht. But could Poland have risen up after their initial defeat and fought off Germany, say in 1944? Without Stalin, possibly.

@@reliantncc1864 Here's the thing: Belgium almost completely FUBAR'd Germany's war plans, by accident. Sabaton made a song about the group that did so, and it's from the same album as this song. Resist And Bite. The reason the French lost is because they were still acting high and mighty from The Great War, so they had Victorious Winners Syndrome, where they basically just.......shat the bed in most ways when they were invaded. Funny Mustache Man's Generals were saying not to press on with the invasion of France due to how heavily they took losses invading Poland, and that's with the USSR speeding up the thing by giving Poland the Spy TF2 "Surprise Buttsecks!" backstab. The Poles are absolutely cracked, and halfway to batshit insane when somebody messes with them. I am of the quite reasonable opinion that the reason the British Expeditionary Force failed in the initial France invasion is due to factors of how their tanks were designed, how the 30s had absolutely wreaked havoc on the British military budget, and a less severe case of Victorious Winners Syndrome due to the Great War as well. Despite what the propaganda videos might show you (and I'm saying this as in the actual reels from the time, made in Germany itself.), most of the Wehrmacht was, in fact, Footsloggers (infantry). Flesh is quite soft, and wont stand up well against bullets. Especially a rapid firing of bullets from machinegun emplacements. I'm getting a bit rambly at this point, so I'll just cut it here and say this: had Poland been left to their devices against the invading Wehrmacht, they would've had the chance to win, just by how fierce they will fight.

Sabaton's song referred to a single unit that (while certainly commendable) did nothing at all to stop or even slow down the German advance. As for Poland, it was defeated before it began. Where are you getting this insane notion that Poland had a military that could possibly have stopped Germany? Look, I love Poland. There's no anti-Pole bias going on here. I have unlimited respect for their courage and determination. But courage doesn't turn a pointed stick into a tank. At best, there were two countries that could have stopped a German invasion on the ground while bordering Germany. Neither of them actually did border Germany, because they were the US and the USSR. So I ask again: where are you getting this?

@@user-se1mg8bq3n пробрался в конс-лаге, "Освенц" дабы узнать что там происходит, зделал себе фальшивие документы и попал туда как поймавшийся еврей. SS дали ему номерацию "номер 4859" потом с некоторыми соучастниками попытался сбежать и у него это получилось. Он рассказал что там происходило и даже помог солдатам Красной армии освободить Освенц дальше он воевал при освобождении Варшавы и т.д. Потом после войны он захотел попасть в лагеря под названием "ГУЛАГ" на территории СССР, его конечно же поймали НКВДшники и приговорили в расстрелу из за нелегального проникновения в лагерь. 1948 году был расстрелян, убили его как собаку в затылок. Он был награждён посмертно как герой Польши, и освободитель лагеря Освенц.

This year I went to Poland as a holiday and we went to Auschwitz and at one point the tour guide was talking about some of the escapes in there and asked one simple question. Who has heard of WItold Pilecki and having heard this song and the Sabaton history video attached to it I was the only one from our group. Our tour guide was even impressed.

He's the guy that went into Auschwitz to get the word out to the allies. But no one believed him at the time.and he got executed by the Soviets after the war for trying the same thing on the gulags.

Anyone curious. This is about Witold PIlecki. A polish intelligence officer who offered himself to Auschwitz to give reports of what was happening inside and hopes of establishing a way to bring it down from the inside. He escaped when his country was taken over by the Germans and fought in Warsaw. After Poland became communist he backed the rebellion and was caught, tortured and finally executed in 1948.
