In my time in the Brazilian army in the late 2000s, the story of the 3 Brazilian heroes was the one that was told with most pride.

@@kira68200 Long story short the Allies didn't want the Brazillians to help in the war. The Americans supplied a few units of Brazillian "Expeditionary" troops with REALLY shitty supplies. In Italy around the push towards Monte Cassino three Brazillian troops decided that instead of surrendering to an overwhelming German force that was about to capture the town that they (whats left of their scout party) would rather die slowing down the advance. They ran out of ammo and eventually suicide charged with bayonets into the Germans who buried them promptly and put down the saying on their graves that they were honorable and the most fearless warriors they've seen. (or something along those lines). The term "Smoking Snakes" is in reference to the morale of the Brazillians before being allowed into the war. The "Pro-interventionist" soldiers used to say "Brazil will join the war when cobras smoke cigars" and then when they were allowed to fight with US supplies in Italy they named the units "Smoking Cobras" or "Smoking Snakes".

As a Brazilian, I would like to add some context for the story of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB in Portuguese). The term “smoking snakes” were in reference of a popular joke ate the time: “It's more likely for a snake to smoke a pipe than for the FEB to go the front and fight”, mocking the time it took between declaring war (1942) and sending troops (1944). In response of this mockery, the FEB decided that its symbol would be a smoking snake and due to the brave participation in the war, the meaning of the expression “a snake will smoke a pipe” changed from “it will never happen” to “it will happen right now!”. And finally, I appreciate the research Sabaton made before, not only the historical, but also linguistic. The portuguese line on the song (“Cobra Fumante, eterna é sua vitoria” - which translates to “Smoking sankes, your victory is eternal”) are closer to a Brazillian dialect than a Portuguese one.

The German troops recognized these true warriors with a Crucifix marking their graves. You know these men had to be epic to earn that much respect on the battlefield from their enemies.

Similar was said to US troops in ww1. I think it's just a thing our continents developed. Both north and south were very hostile terrain 100 years ago and it made the people a bit brave and a lot crazy.

You forget the French Army at the pocket of Lille - fought 10:1 + 4 of Rommel's Panzer divisions, and they still held & pushed back invaders to retreat, for several days, without supplies, cut from logistics, and encircled, which helped the pocket of Dunkirk to retreat also

Because it was irrelevant, I mean thanks for helping us out Brazil, but your contribution was somewhere around fuck all to put it bluntly. Brazil sent just under 26000 men. The UK would take over 3 times that in casualties just in the Italian campaign. As for any Brazilians reading this, your contribution might have been insignificant but you do deserve to celebrate it and be thanked for it.

@@manishdyall4779 I didn't quite understand what you were trying to say, I don't know if you meant that Brazil's participation was insignificant in World War II, but I want to say that. You shouldn't put a country first or second by the number of deaths it had, you have to see what the country did in the war. Brazil for example was the only country that flew more air missions than any other country in Italy, and was the only country to capture 25,000 German soldiers in Italy. Let's stop with this discussion of who died more or who died less, let's think that it was 26 thousand young people aged 18 and 19 who risked their lives for people they had never seen in their lives.

This has got to be the craziest last stand I’ve heard of, because there was no logical reason for it. They weren’t guarding a retreat, or buying time, it was just three random dudes pinned down on a scouting mission. Most reasonable people would just surrender, but these dudes just randomly decided to be incredibly badass.

Well, I mean connect the pieces. 3 dudes on a scouting mission fighting to the death, and the germans gave these three nobodies a military burial as well as marking them heroes. Idc what these guys did they died for our country and they deserve every legend that has come of their actions.

this story is fake, these 3 soldiers died on different circunstances and in very different places, and they werent even from the same group, with one of them being a rear medic, theres another story that has more truth in it, and as such, is far less heroic, 4 soldiers patrolling, they run into germans and fire at them, the germans start retreating and the brazillians in a not very smart move run after them, it happened that there was a fortified german position to where the germans were retreating, but the brazillians did not know, and it looks like they didnt remember a basic rule: your enemy is retreating? Then he is retreating somewhere. When they met the german fortified position it was a surprise for them, but not for the germans, if ended as fast as it started, 3 soldiers died, while the 4th one was captured, it wasnt bravery, it wasnt a suicidal charge or a heroic moment, as soon as the machine gun started firing, they had nowhere to retreat, nowhere to go, so they stood there in cover and tried to return fire, a useless death like many others, as they died with no actual contribution, due to a stupid decision of not thinking properly, as a brazillian it kinda hurts to know the truth about this, but the reality is: brazillian participation on that war was unnecessary and useless if you see it from a military point.

I remember crying when hearing this for the first time. Half a decade later and it still hits me like a truck. Here in Brazil there isn't a single reference about the soldiers that fought in WW2 in history classes or anything. It's really sad that we seem to know less than the other nations about our heroes.

EU gostaria muito de ter essa oportunidade, inclusive de mostrar algumas coisas que herdei de uns parentes que vivem na Espanha, descobri que tenho um antepassado que foi partisan basco junto aos partisans aragoneses na Espanha defendendo a fronteira contra a incursão dos colaboracionistas nazis. Mas infelizmente não dá tempo, se quiser estudar mais sobre tem de fazer por fora pois não dá pra passar 2500 anos de história em somente 3 anos, e se for trabalhar em história do Brasil aí que tem problema mesmo, a molecada sequer se interessa!

Most of us have heard the expression “when pigs fly” but in a different part of the world another popular saying was that “It’s more likely for a snake to smoke a pipe than for the Brazilian expeditionary force to go to the front and fight” in the same context. However, one day in 1944 the snake did smoke and over 25.000 Brazilians left to join WW2. This is the story about three of them who fought so bravely against a much larger opposing force. Located in the mountains and heavily defended by the Germans as a last bastion to block the advance of allied troops in the direction of the Po Valley, on 14 April 1945, Montese became the stage for the most arduous and bloody battle of Brazilian troops in Italy. Three Brazilian soldiers on patrol were attacked by German forces. Outnumbered, the patrol was ordered to surrender. The three men took cover and opened fire on the enemy until running out of ammunition. Not satisfied, they proceeded to pitch their bayonets and advanced against the Germans and consequently were fired upon and shot dead. This was a great song to listen to and a great story to read. Those three soldiers were brave to fight even with the odds against them. And the German soldiers that buried them showed that they had humanity too. Great song as always Sabaton 💜

More than 26 years ago my grandfather passed away. Back then I was only 9 years old. He was one of those Smoking Snakes that needed to fly all the way from Brazil to Italy to fight in the war. Every time I hear this music I keep on remembering the good times I had with him. Thank you, Sabaton, for keeping his memory fresh in my mind, especially now that I no longer live on Brazilian soil.

A história dos três pracinhas é inspiradora e ao mesmo tempo triste, já que no próprio território brasileiro, é quase esquecida. As escolas não nos ensinam sobre esses verdadeiros heróis e a grande maioria da população sequer conhece a história. Mas é muito reconfortante ouvir uma banda com tanto prestígio como o Sabaton cantando sobre a história dos nossos três heróis. E, nas palavras do Joakin: COBRAS FUMANTES, ETERNA É SUA VITÓRIA!

In Brazil, we have a very common slang, we say "now the snake will smoke" when a fight or a very dangerous situation is about to happen, or even when we are going to face a big problem. It's been 3 years since I discovered the glorious and grand origin of this slang, thank you, Sabaton, for bringing joy to Brazilians who value tradition!

As a Brazillian, I´m proud and grateful for this song! It´s an awesome song just like the story of courage, duty and sacrifice of our soldiers. It´s a shame that most of brazillians try to deminish the role of our soldiers in war. Although the front we participated wasn´t the main objective, got a tatical importance for the war because forced the third reich to move a significant number of troop to defend Italy. I like the story of the "drei brasilianischen helden" but doesn´t exist much information about them. Although, there are the story of the "Os 17 de Abetaia (Abetaia´s 17). An entire squad disapeared in one of the attempts to take the German position in the Monte Castelo region. With the success of the operation in the region in february of 1945, a patrol found the frozen bodies of the disappeared soldiers in combat position, some with the finger on the trigger and others holding grenades to throw in the enemies as a last resource since they were low on ammo. Long live Sabaton!
