Is Sabaton the type of band I should react to before looking up the historical events they sing about or should I do a little research on what the song is about first?

You can go with the song first, because usually they give context on their songs. They also have an history channel with 20 to 30 minutes long videos that cover the events of most of their songs. Also, if there is an animated story video (No bullet flies, Night witches, The red baron...) I would recommend to watch it instead of the lyric video

The secret avenue they're referring to is Passetto di Borgo, a roughly 2600 ft long path that runs from Vatican city to the Castel Sant'Angelo and sits roughly 20 to 30 ft above the streets, in its entire history it had been used twice, once in 1494 when Alexander VI fled the city following Charles VIIIs Invasion and 1524 during the sack of rome

Is it still accessible today, like a tourist attraction? It also reminds me a bit of a part of a game called Dragon Quest VIII. Instead of Rome, it was a ruined Abbey, but it still had an underground passage where you had to fight a fallen priest, who was the Abbot of the Abbey before it fell to ruin.

If you haven't already learned, except for the 42 that escorted the pope to Castel St Angelo, all the rest of the Swiss Guard died during a last stand in the Vatican to give the pope time to get to safety.

The Holy Roman Empire was a spiritual successor to the Roman Empire - they were German, not Roman. And they didn't control Rome, either. Basically a huge confederation of tiny states in the german region, plus more in other areas (like northern italy). The HRE came about long after the fall of the western Roman empire and failed Byzantine efforts to retake italy.

They thought they were the successors to Rome. That's basically it. A lot of countries have tried to make themselves cooler/more prestigious by claiming to be the new Rome. The pope might have had something to do with it as well. From a quick search, they may have briefly controlled Rome itself early in their history, but of course that didn't last.

So first we have the romen empire that ended up being spit in west and east romen empire. West Rome died out and east became the Byzantine empire. Later on Charlemagne that was the king of France was crowned Romen emperor by the pope like 300 years after the original romen empire. Then we have the Holy romen empire or the Holy Romen empire of German nations. The holy romen empire started when Otto the great was crowned emperor and that was over 160 years after Charlemagne was crowned as romen emperor. Some Historians consider Charlemagne crowning as the start of the holy romen empire and some think there is two different Romen empires. This song is about Otto's Holy romen empire that was by the time of the sacking of Rome was rule by Charles V. Most of the soldiers that attacked Rome was Lutheran protestants and Rome is the seat of power for the Catholics and the two branches of Christiania had a bit of friction between them. About 100 years after the sacking of Rome the friction turned into a 30 year long war inside the Holy Romen Empire.

This is very oversimplified but Rome was a City state, it was then a kingdom, then a Republic that took control of all of Italy, Sicily, and The islands of Sardinia and Corsica, then it became the Roman Empire. The Empire will eventually split into East and West, with the East referred to as the Byzantine Empire, and the West falling to the Vandels and Visigoths. The Holy Roman Empire was a Germanic Empire formed when the Pope, at first Charlemagne and later another German, gave the title of Emperor to Charlemagne. The HRE was to be a continuation of the Western half of the Empire.

@@AceofBadeReacts aye. I used to not care about History till I came across Sabaton, then I learned just how fascinating it can be. To be just a little more specific about the multiple Roman Empires. Rome as the founding city would become the Old Captial of the Empire when Constantine the Great moved the Captial to, what would become, Constantinople which would become the Captial of the ERE. Around after that the Empire would have a system where there was to be two Emperors (they called it Augustus) which would Rule/Oversee their half of the Empire and was to aid the other, this would eventually make the Empire Split as the East was better managed and defended then the West, with the West having VERY incompetent Leaders, this would cause the Western half, alongside the Founding City Rome, to fall to the Vandels and Visigoths. The fall of Rome was completed in 476 A.D, when the German chieftain Odoacer deposed the last Roman emperor of the West, Romulus Augustulus. The East, always richer and stronger, continued as the Byzantine Empire through the European Middle Ages. Byzantine Empire, the eastern half of the Roman Empire, which survived for a thousand years after the western half had crumbled into various feudal kingdoms and which finally fell to Ottoman Turkish onslaughts in 1453 A.D. The formation of the Holy Roman Empire was initiated by Charlemagne's, he was a Frankish who were a Germanic Tribe that formed the Kingdom of France, coronation as “Emperor of the Romans” in 800 A.D, and consolidated by Otto I when he was crowned emperor in 962 A.D by Pope John XII. The Holy Roman Empire had survived over a thousand years when it was finally destroyed by Napoleon and the French in 1806 A.D. It had survived for more than a thousand years since the coronation of Charlemagne in the year 800 A.D.
