Welcome to Sabaton, the best way to learn history! They are from Sweden and almost all of their songs are history based, singing about war related events. They do not glorify war, they tell stories they believe should be told. Sabaton also has their own history channel where they explain historical background of events and people mentioned in their songs. This particular song is about the sack of Rome 1527 when Swiss Guard laid their lives to protect the Pope. Btw, the guitarist Tommy Johansson who you saw already recently left the band to focus on his own band Majestica and his solo career, but he remains a good friend with other Sabaton members. Their music is all based on historical events or individuals, especially military history. I would next recommend No Bullets Fly(animated story version), the Winged Hussars, and the Great War(which shows a lot of behind-the-scenes shots). Almost everyone starts with Bismarck, which is an awesome video, but it's very commonly watched. Also for your own enjoyment, the guys love to poke fun at each other, so you may want to check out some of their funny moments videos.

Thanks for your reaction. Sabaton is a Swedish Metal Band, Tommy Johannson played lead guitar from 2016-January 2024. The last stand ist also the title of the album "The Last Stand". Quote from the official Sabaton page: "A concept album about “last stand” military battles, every song on The Last Stand tells the story of an extraordinary act of defiance by an outnumbered or outgunned military unit, spanning the millennia from the famous Battle of Thermopylae in ancient Greece (Sparta) to a small group of paratroopers who fought off 250 rebels during the Soviet-Afghan war in 1988 (Hill 3234)."

If you want to know the details about this song you should watch the episode about it on their history channel. But roughly explained: some lord hired an army. Back then it was common that the winning army ransacked everything because they didn't earn much, but where they went there was nothing to get and the lord who hired them couldn't pay them. To save his own ass the lord said that the church will pay them and when they didn't the army straight up marched in to rome to kill the pope and get their money. But the swiss guard who protect the pope to this day, were able to hold them back long enough for the pope to escape. However the army found him not too long after anyways

1527 is a very important date in European history as the Sack of Rome changed art, politics and religion in various parts of Europe. Firstly the Sack of Rome changed are as before 1527 the art is definitely in the style of the Italian High Renaissance i.e. the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and afterwards there is a definite shift So the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel was painted after the Sack and is very different in tone. Secondly the power balance was altered as the pope was effectively held prisoner by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and after this event the pope wasn't a first rank player on the political stage. Thirdly as the HRE was Charles V and he controlled the pope when Henry VIII of England wanted a divorce from the HRE's aunt - he didn't get it so England became protestant and Henry declared himself head of the Church of England. This was key for English / British / Anglophone history.

The song is about the sacking of Rome 1527. Frundsberg (I think) was unable to pay his mercenary army any more, and had not received money from the Kaiser to keep the war going ("Abandoned by their lords") and thus he had no other option than to actually allow his mercenaries to sack rome, in lieu of other pay. Which led to quite the massacre and the Swiss guard gave their lives to at least save the Pope. As far as other Sabaton songs go, you might want to watch 1916, Christmas truce, En livstead i Krig (live in Gothenburg), Stormtroopers, and Soldier of Heaven. Maybe also "Winged Hussars".

Dont worry alot of listeners confuse this song with the crusades, so much so its become a meme. But no its about the Swiss Guard in the sack of Rome in 1527 by Protestant...think they were mercenaries but they couldve been actual soliders. They have a history channel here on KZfaq that goes into the backstory, both the song itself and the historical backstory of their songs.
