It's not pure facts though. This whole comment section makes me embarrassed to be English. We were an utter disaster before Southgate took over, a complete embarrassment on the international stage. If someone had told you after the Iceland game in 2016 that we would get to the semi-final of the next World Cup, lose on penalties in the final of the Euro's, and then be the better team against the current World Champions but ultimately get knocked out in the quarters, whilst missing a crucial penalty, would you genuinely have said that our manager had done a bad job? It's completely ridiculous to judge an international manager solely on trophies won, because it's knockout football and they literally get one shot at it EVERY TWO YEARS! Let that sink in... of the hundreds of nations in the world, only one manager can win a tournament every two years. Does that mean that every single other manager that didn't win is now dogshit and deserves to be sacked? No, because if you normalise the skill levels of the individual teams, knockout football is ultimately going to be decided on fine margins and luck. It's monumentally difficult to win these tournaments, some of the greatest managers of all time have tried and failed. Alex Ferguson could only win two champions leagues in almost 30 years. Two fucking champions leagues. Does that mean he wasn't a good manager? Obviously not. Again, back to my point about fine margins and luck. Southgate clearly isn't the same as Ferguson, but you need to look at the bigger picture here - have we made progress whilst he's been in charge? Yes, undoubtedly. More progress than we've made in 60 or so years, therefore he deserves to stay and should be backed

@@ksrandom4940 Rashford is in much better form than Sterling, and Sterling had been sat on a plane half the week flying between Qatar and England and back. Southgate brought him on because he felt obliged to because he came back. His priority is keeping his favourites happy, not winning football matches.

Most of the coaches of top countries who got eliminated by the quarter finals have respectfully stepped down or have been let go. Even Deschamps will step down and hand over the reigns if he wins the World Cup.

Are y’all also forgetting that we got relegated from a ‘Nations League’ group with Hungary in it? Same Hungary that beat us 1-0 & 0-4 over the 2 games. No where near the magnitude of a Euros/World Cup but for me that’s a sackable offence in itself.

4:09 is spot on. The FA have been getting away with this for years. It's not just the manager contracts either, it's the fact that their number 1 goal is to create an environment conducive to produce world class technical/tactically astute talent and they've failed at that for amost 6 DECADES. We need every single player on the pitch to be sublimely technical on the ball, and clued up tactically, not just a few. France, Spain, Italy and Germany have managed it during that time, why haven't we? Even Croatia produce more technical/tactically able players than us.

Too mamy players have no skill what so ever.. Take Grielish or Foden, talked up as world beaters yet have no trick in their locker... you are right about the futsal whether you're joking or not... best talent we had in a generation Joe Cole was wasted/ruined by mourinho (of all people). Because he wanted him to play a system which didnt allow him to play with freedom and creativity... Not 1 england player in this squad can do anything magical.. possibly, and its a slight possibility, Foden if dropped behind a front 2 might manage something...

Spot on! If the FA could get away with it they would give Gareth a contract for life. In fact they probably will. Gareth ticks every box for them except being a top coach. Winning a trophy would be nice but it’s not a dealbreaker.

So true. Its funny that the world of punditry has become aware of Ronaldos inability to press and general liability that brings in the past year or so, but the media refuse to open their fucking eyes and see that Kane is Englands equivalent, trudging around in slow motion occasionally winning the odd free kick with a daft dive because he's too slow to evade his marker. That's the worst thing though, that Southgate is too terrified to ever sub him off. We all know Kane is a bottler on the big occasions, he's just not built for the pressure games, some people aren't, it's not his fault as such but Southgate needs to take it into account. So when he misses a fucking penalty his head is completely gone, he doesn't have the fortitude to shrug it off, he retreats into self doubt. A good manager takes him off as soon as that happens. Even Germany subbed off Lahm when his head went in the final v Spain. There's no shame in it. Its basic coaching, once a player is mentally shot you take him out of the firing line. But Southgate is such a pussy he can't do it it. He was even too scared to drop Kane in meaningless warm up/ nations league games not even giving Toney or Wilson a kick. How is kane even going to be at his best if he knows there's nobody there to challenge him for his place.

Our chance was in the euros. We had the momentum and togetherness from the previous World Cup and we had a highly favourable draw in our own backyard. A failure on that level should have led to a change.

I agree with Adam. Im bemused by the FA decision to let Southgate to stay on until 2024. I don't blame him for deciding to stay on and get paid. But it is entirely predictable that we will lose at Euro 24 at the first sniff of a top team assuming we get to the knock out phase. We have the players but not a world class manager. I would get in Tuchel but thats the FA for you.

Do we really have the players though? Our defence and goalkeeper and nowhere near top level. Rice isn't top level, Bellingham can be in time. Saka and Foden are still inconsistent and Kane has yet to genuinely take over in a big game. If you made a world 11 how many English players you putting in?

@@magikarpsplashy I think we do. Pickford is consistently top class on the international stage. Back 4 of James, Stones, Maguire and Shaw I feel is perfectly balanced for international football. Rice is one of the best young defensive midfielders in Europe. Bellingham is already a top class midfielder who will improve. The other midfield spot is up for grabs. Then Saka and Foden are the very definition of average if you get them into the right positions. Kane though I agree, is a massive let down in big game situations

@@stevendonovan7564 a top class keeper saves that first goal, the defence whilst being cohesive is nowhere near top level. Rice has yet to prove anything at the top level in my eyes, for every good game I've seen from him, I've also seen McTominay make him look average at least twice. Bellingham has had amazing games aswell as bad ones (USA for example, but he's young at that happens). Foden should be playing number 10, he's too good to be isolated on a wing. Saka again needs a few years to be consistent. The only player I feel we could even argue is genuinely top level is Kane, and he seems to freeze at the big moments in his career.

bluemooner: Success is based on expectations and if the team is improving, Southgate has improved England undoubtedly so getting to a semi then final is success. This world cup we arguably played the best stuff since he took over and getting knocked out in the quarters was mostly down to a poor referee and a missed pen from kane which both have nothing to do with Southgate. Football isn't black and white, you judge a managers tenure on performances. You should know that more than most because it's why pep is still in the city job. Even with arguably the best side in the world he keeps failing at winning the champions league but his performances continue to be very high so keeps his job

Honestly I am disgusted, absolutely and completely let down by how Southgate set us up against France. After rashford had a fantastic tournament he played 5 minutes, sterling to come on after his house being robbed? Grealish being brought in for 2 minutes at the end? Honestly he needs to step down. The audacity to stay on is outrageous. I no Kane misses the pen, but that was a LIFE LINE! Southgate is a reactive manager not a proactive… if rashford and grealish where brought on at 70 mins, England would have killed that game off. No doubt about it. England are still playing catch up with other countries with regard to its coaching standards/culture. Would another coach get a better tune out of these players in those big games, make better/more proactive substitutions? We shall never know now, but I suspect they would. England will not win the next Euros. We all know it, and then Southgate will leave. Can we match countries such as France for the quality of players we produce going forward? I do not trust the FA to be able to do this, based on their historical incompetence. And so it goes on. The more things change, the more they stay the same. It is hard to win these things of course, but its interesting how its always certain countries that do win, or are close. I wouldn't trust the FA to bridge this obvious gap if they had until the end of time.

Yea think you’re right … maybe if that young squad felt the pain of going out of tournaments at critical stages might give experience and hunger to go the Ultimate step … final ! having Southgate as manager might not get that final step either ! Been saying it for a long long time. He has won precisely ONE competitive game that he wasn't expected to. Against the worst German team in my lifetime by a considerable distance. He has lost multiple matches expected to win. It's pretty simple analysis. England will likely never see a decade window where so many peers are so weak, home tournaments, ect. He's literally had the cards stacked in his favour more than any other nation.. yet achieved precisely nothing. A competent tactician, during this same period.. could have had a record of Final, Winner & Final (potentially winner, Argentina aren't amazing). Simply put, every other nation in the top 20 would sack a manager with Southgate's record.

He won everything in the air at the back, was dangerous in attack, brought the ball out of defence and sprayed passes all over the place. He's our most solid player and no player you mentioned has his attributes.

This is spot on and that stat sums up Southgate. 4 wins isn't good enough. We should have won the euros last summer, game was completely there for the taking against an ageing Italy side and England sat off.

This situation is same as Ole at Man Utd. The difference is that 90% of the teams that England face are not a better side than England so it’s like playing the bottom half teams of the EPL. But you can see that in game tactics of Southgate are non existent. He hasn’t learned at all since the 2018 World Cup. Ultimately it’s going to cost England in the Euros because in a 50/50 game Southgate will always lose as he doesn’t have any in game tactics.
