Ever wondered how to write a sad ending? I love sad endings, and I've written loads, so in this video I discuss what I think works and what doesn't. I talk about the purpose of a sad ending, and use some examples from films.

I completely agree about endings that mix happy & sad being really memorable! In the novel I've been writing, I've tried to do this and it really does make the story seem more realistic

It works, doesn't it? Happy endings can sometimes feel a bit forced. Even if it's mainly happy but with a tinge of sadness, I'd say that's better than a fully happy ending. But of course it's all subjective. Hope your novel is going well :)

Mate, just want to say I LOVE your video quality, it's really polished. And I agree that sometimes sad endings can be more poignant. One of the saddest endings I ever read was in Louise O'Neill's "Only Ever Yours" but I don't think the book would have been as moving and impactful if the ending had been happy. The sad ending really summed up the message of the book and felt very necessary.

Thank you Zarina! I haven't read "Only Ever Yours", so I will definitely check that out. I think that's the most important thing with a sad ending - it has to feel necessary, doesn't it? Imagine Sauron killing everyone at the end of Lord of the Rings for no good reason. It could maybe work, but it needs to be making some kind of point, in my opinion. Great to speak to you :)

@@21stCenturyWriter yeah I agree lol, or if the Night King killed everyone at the end of GOT. "Only Ever Yours" is a dystopia, like a modern Handmaid's Tale. It's one of my favourite books, so powerful and poignant.

GTA IV it's a good example for the player. You happy with finishing the game, but it's also sad with all that happened and Niko's final words. The feeling i got it was that i win and lose at the same time.

I think the reason we like sad endings isnt necesarily because it feels more realistic it feels more honest. The universe isnt cruel its indifferent. Happy endings do exist but they arent always given. So sad endings take a more honest approach and say hey its ok to be sad. I would not say this is universal I feel like great endings come with a sacrifice. A long victory, bittersweet ending, or straight up sad endings.
