All the years I was homeless, I suppose, I lived in tents, abandoned shacks and cabins. Work was hard to come by and then it was always minimum wage for labour. Being poor was difficult. Being poor made it hard to be accepted or trusted by others. I hunted and fished, grew as much food as I could for myself and others. Life on the street must be more difficult. I wasn't a drug addict or alcoholic and fortunately I had grown up learning to feed myself (hunting, fishing, growing vegetables and gathering fruit from neglected orchards and trees gone wild). Life is double hard when you don't know how to feed and take care of yourself. I wish the world was a better, more fair and sharing place. I'm glad I've been living in this same small log cabin for the past 36 years, growing a garden and taking care of myself as best I am able. Now that I'm old I am glad to have this place (renting) as to me this is home. Being alone, with no friends or family for support, makes life a lot harder too. I feel sorry for those poor souls that are lost on the street.

i am from canada..i have visited all the countries in south east asia in my holiday trip..which made me surprised i thought i would have a vacation to a poor country..how surprised i was when i visited those countries..i thought life was hard there. .but after i arrived they all live like in heaven..no homeless like in my country..even people are very friendly..music and dancers are everywhere...food is very good and cheap..i think they are country really rich..but they are not good at making films like the US which makes hallucinations that their country is a beautiful country..even though in reality there is a nest of homeless people who live like zombies

The U.S. needs to open institutions where these people can be sent for treatment, mental health care, help them regain their lives.

I have an acquaintance who is homeless. She lives on her own in the wilderness near an almost empty town. She built herself a small house that has 5 tiny rooms. No electricity, no phones. She hunts deer and bunnies and she fishes for her own foods. And boils water for drinking. We never know exactly where she is but she comes visit us once in a long while. Different seasons. Hard weathers. Very pretty girl. Last time I talked to her, she did not want to come back to people life because it was so good there. The middle of nowhere.

Each of these people are our fellow human beings, not throw aways, each has story, maybe one day had hope!

Many of this homeless people have no good ties to their families, no contact to their families, no good social contacts, so after all they are all left behind from society. Good and healthy families are very important to keep a society healthy!

Pathetic is a better word than just sad.

Why can't the authority round up all these people with mental issue into mental hospital and those with substance abuse into rehab centre?

If the politicians can't solve it, then who can.

Our trans daughter vanished for 5 years in Portland. She is now in a state mental hospital for 10 years for Felony Charges and skipping bail! She had a great life ahead of her. She was working on her doctorates at Portland State University as well. Therapist and Doctor are puzzled as well. We're all broken hearted!!!😐

What happened to our humanity here in America? Our citizens live like this but we allow millions of foreign people to come here and are given shelter, food, medical, education benefits. Most people would agree to help our own first while sending aid to the countries these people come from (which we are). Very saddened at what has become of this once great nation.

Why aren't there transition facilities for folks on the waiting list for housing that are zoned as exceptions to minimal acceptable sizes ... by which I mean something akin to "capsule hotels" ... with good security, post office boxes, shared communal space (some outdoors), laundromat, fire extinguishers & escape plans, a designated room for privacy if home health care visitor Rx, showers/toilets (female, male, and gender neutral), near bus stops & at least 1 convenience store or grocery store (&, ideally a pharmacy +/- a library)? Possibly with designated places designed for the special safety needs to house the homeless people requiring mental health care, that has a % of staff trained for handling incidents that may arise, and more expert weekday visiting providers to oversee &/or manage residents' care (& to identify persons whose behavior continued to presents a danger to others & thus warrants placement elsewhere). If modular designs (for new & gutted buildings + is adaptable to existing structures) could be approved, bulk rates for materials & labor could be bid on and many fewer people could be homeless! The idea that homes have to meet current living standards or not exist .. as though living on the streets weren't both more dangerous and a hindrance to getting and holding down a job ... has to be more flexible! The intentions were to protect people, but,the rising numbers of homeless people is evidence to the contrary! ~~~~~~~~~~~ Re even middle class homelessness: Another service worth offering homeless people includes Credit Repair services, because the escalating % of rentals controlled by property management agencies are rejecting access to lease applications for FICO scores less than 650 (or 600 for a small minority of properties, typically those further from the center of town and jobs).
