This has to be the most solid, least sketchy (aka not sketchy at all) trailer to cradle switch I've ever seen on youtube. You should see some of the ways these other guys get their boats off... oh dear. But -- great work Dennis!

I don't think that's overkill at all. Better safe than sorry. You should have plenty of time to do trailer work and NOT worry about the boat tipping. Great job my friend. Steve

Thanks Steve! That's how it worked out.....I got delayed by other things and had the boat on these cradles for at least a couple of months. They held up great! Thanks for watching!

after a decade of Sailboat bottom maintenance 25' & up if we couldn't lift & hang it in straps we pull up between two poles ( two trees ) using the halyards or sheets with the winch it snug bow and stern , two port, two starboard standing straight on keel, deep, shoal, swing drop the bunks , straps, pads NEVER once had an issue

Great work, great presentation. Seems like your setup could handle an aircraft carrier, but wise to err on the side of over building.

I'm sure it can! I just used what timber I had on-hand, but I'm sure this would hold a much heavier boat. Thanks for watching, Alan!

This totally helps. I was trying to figure out how to get past the multiple cross members when only doing a center bow support, versus your span rig. Now, any tips how to get past the issue of trailer guides on the back that stick up in the air a couple of feet?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, David! I'd see if the vertical guide could be taken off the trailer. Sometimes they are just bolted on with a couple of bolts. If not, you might have to set up for two fore supports. Build the most forward one under the boat, move the trailer as far forward as you can, then build the second fore support right behind the vertical guides and remove the first fore support. Or maybe you can get enough support under the keel and do the same type thing just using 2 keel supports, letting the aft support hold the boat steady.

Not to diminish your engineering prowess, but what's the downside of leaving the boat anchored at a nearby lake for a couple of days, allowing for trailer repairs?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Not a bad question at all! This is exactly what I would have done if I thought I could make it to the lake. The nearest boat ramp with 24" of water to me is about an hour away. I had zero confidence that the trailer would make it without incident, so the boat had to come off in the driveway. Thanks for watching, Troy!

Good job but 4x4 aren't strong like that you could have used 2x8 and made a header beam
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Don! I'm not sure what part of it you are referring to. I used 4x4 for the posts and the feet. As posts/columns 4x4 yellow pine is good for a minimum of 4300 lbs each. My boat only weighs 1200 lbs total, so each post got a maximum load of around 500lbs, assuming the rear cradle got more weight due to the placement of the ballast in the boat. The feet on each cradle only get the load from each post and a small additional load from the diagonal braces. The good thing is that my boat is fairly light, so most all of what I built would take a lot more load than my boat would put on the structure.

You could have just pulled the ramps backwards from under the trailer and lowered it that way. But I guess you had factored the height of the added bricks into the lumber construction? You could have just jacked trailer sides and removed tables one at a time. Good job and plenty of over kill on the construction.

Mate you totally over engineered that contraption. I supported my 30ft 2 ton trailer sailer on much less than that but it did feel a bit precarious.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yea, it would hold twice the boat than I have, but I worked with what lumber I had and since I needed to have it off the trailer for 3 weeks or so, I didn't want to worry about it. All worked out in the end! Thanks for watching Philbo!

He is one if the very few people to actually get it right with as little effort as possible and secure his investment and be structurally safe. He also made it look easy, and it was compared to most of the crap other people did on KZfaq. Always better to be over designed and supported, than risk damage to the boat and your own safety because of cheapness and stupidity.
@lynkpaul2171
@lynkpaul2171 Жыл бұрын
You are one of the few people in KZfaq to actually get it right while making it safe. The more structured the support, the less risk of damage to to your boat or yourself. Better to be safe than sorry and not cheap like some of the others. I wound build my supports like that. People may think it's over engineered by TV it's not their boat and if you are an engineer, like me, you would know the value of doing so, even for this.

Concrette block breaks real ez
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, John. On the open face, concrete blocks will support up to 1700 lbs each. My boat weighs about 1000 lbs, so no worries about the blocks breaking. Whenever using concrete blocks, the load should always be on the open faces rather than the closed sides.
