IIHS challenges automakers with tougher TOP SAFETY PICK award criteria
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is making it harder to earn its TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards in 2024, challenging manufacturers to offer better protection for back seat passengers and improve their pedestrian crash avoidance systems.
Despite the more stringent requirements, 71 models qualify for 2024 awards. Of those, 22 earn TOP SAFETY PICK+, and 49 earn TOP SAFETY PICK.

@@japanwatchconnectionmost stolen? You need to do your research.. their older models with key to start are the EASIEST to steal.. still not the most stolen. Kia telluride holds its value better than a Toyota Highlander and Honda pilot.. things change, it’s 2024, not 2010 Kia’s and Hyundais are on the most stolen list because they didn’t add immobilization to lower trims from 2011-2019.. the rest have immobilization and STILL get stolen more. 🤔

Please also include criteria for tailllights: separate running, brake and amber turn signals. Too many USDM vehicles have unacceptable taillights without proper separate running, brake and amber turn signals, which can cause ambiguity and are therefore less effective and safe.

When is the criteria going to be changed so that any vehicle with a subrating for injury criteria won't be a TSP? No vehicle that has injury criteria that still scores an overall good should be awarded TSP in my opinion. Especially when there are cars from 03-05 that could pass the OG offset and side impact with good in all subcategories but there are still vehicles that have issues doing so today.

I’m stunned that the 2024 Toyota Camry only got a regular Top Safety Pick award because of that shattering window and injures that lead to a Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test and also since it had been a TSP+ for 8 years, I wonder what reaction ToyotaCamryFan2016 will get… And also, even the best selling Toyota, the RAV4, didn’t receive any award, I wonder if people will buy a CR-V instead after finding out that their favorite SUV had no award…

You guys need to actually start rolling over vehicles several times down a hill (outside) instead of testing the strength of the roof, and then you need to record the kind of movement that’s being forced on the dummy as well as how good their seatbelts and airbags are able to work. Unlike frontal crashes where the entire event happens less then a second, rollovers last for over a couple seconds which leads to risk of your seatbelt failing if it wasn’t designed well and wasn’t designed with the thought of being able to restrain upside passengers that are also being tossed around. In February 2023 my 2004 Ford F-150 extended cab rolled over several times down the ditch before string a giant tree. It crushed in the drivers side door and knocked the wind out me. I also lost some of my hair when I hit my head and my hair got caught between the window and door frame. It took me about 10 to 15 seconds for me to start breathing again and I dealt with right wrist pain from my steering column snapping, whiplash, and chest pain from my seat belt which also left a rug burn on my chest. The drivers side door was jammed shut and the foot well was smashed about 6 inches inward where the left foot usually rest. In order to walk away I had to scoot to the passenger side to get out. My front airbag didn’t go off because nothing hit the front end and my truck didn’t come with side curtain airbags yet. However I thankfully walked away without any broken bones or a concussion. But I remember the rollover lasting for about 5 seconds and I remember the feeling as if my neck was about to break from the g force. The g force and the pressure on my chest from my seatbelt tensioner locking up also prevented me from being able to breathe while I was rolling over and by the time I hit the tree and actually knocked the wind out of me. I was already desperate for a gasp of air that I remember thinking that I would pass out from lack of oxygen 🤷‍♂️

Why is a 'good' rating required in all categories except pedestrian protection? Why do manufacturers get to claim the prestige that goes with a TSP award despite their focus on pedestrian safety only being 'acceptable'? Come on, this really is low-hanging fruit. The industry has regressed massively on pedestrian safety in recent years, and IIHS should put pressure on manufacturers to up their game on all fronts.

Like we were in traffic for so long and we saw the accident that it was in, no one survived in the Kia.

Designs that place headlights or tailllight assemply in the lower corner of bumbers should be banned. Many Hyundai and Kia designs results in high repair costs even from a light bumper scrape.
