Sailing Red Seas

Күн бұрын

After lots of preparation, we finally set sail from Panama to cross the Pacific Ocean on our Leopard 47 catamaran. Things start out well as we catch a couple of fish and fly our spinnaker in the light winds but eventually we get stuck in the doldrums and the engine has to take over. We provisioned heavily with extra diesel supplies and this is our first opportunity to try out our drill pump to re-fuel our tanks underway.
This is the first episode in our Pacific Crossing series. We hope you enjoy the ride!

We were just so relieved it worked. Not too sure we would be smiling if it hadn’t 😂 thanks for watching and look forward to next weeks episode. We are just putting the finishing tweaks to it for patreon today. Fun editing in a boat being rocked around by the swell (everything takes longer)

It’s actually happening! We still pinch ourselves at the thought. Can’t wait to share the voyage across 2 hemispheres, the largest ocean on earth and over 4000 nautical miles of deep blue water.

Put a chain or something on that filler cap or buy an extra two. If you drop one oh boyyyyyyy.

Tell me about it. Thankfully we have a 3d printer onboard so if it comes to it, we can print a temporary replacement. The original chain corroded well before we found Indioko.

Stop motoring, what’s the rush, the wind will come. Enjoy the peace of a quiet ocean. Stay safe out there.
@RedSeas
@RedSeas Жыл бұрын
Haha no rush at all. In fact we have always said that we want to predicate every moment of the crossing rather than race to see how fast we can do it. We did a fair bit of sailing as we left panama However, at this stage of the crossing, we would probably be drifting north with the humble current and end up north of Mexico if we didn’t motor. 😂 don’t worry tho. Plenty of sailing to come and so so so much more passaging ahead.

great video, as for fuel, you do not need a drill...just a hose and an old cloth, put hose in tank, other side in jerrycan to the bottom, close the gab between the hose and the opening of the jerrycan. Push the jerry can firmly one time.... it will syphon in by itself. Alternatively, there are hoses with a glass/metal ball on the end, you just shake the ball part in the jerry can, and the fuel will start running....Why no drill? Risk for sparks when petrol, need for battery, more complicated than necessary. Also works with the barrel, close the top hole with the cloth, put your outh on it and blow in the barrel....fastest fuel fill ever..beats your pump as its max hose speed

@RedSeas 6 ай бұрын
Cheers. We had fun making it (and plenty of time of our hands too 😂) we actually have one of those ball bearing hoses that we use onboard but way more fun with the drill. Plus a lot less work when you are busy with other things onboard. Still, all good fun

There are even hoses to pump fuel from cans into the tank without any energy needed. This bases on an physical phenomenon when the stream is running once it will continue until there's air sucking into the hose. Available in yacht chandleries with kind of non return valve. You just move the hose in the can up and down a few times until the stream is running. Charging the battery for the impact driver surely needs a lot of power as this will have to run on dc to ac converter first just to convert again in the charger to dc. This process includes lots of loss.
@RedSeas
@RedSeas Жыл бұрын
We actually have one of those also. The driver pump is just much much faster. As we live full time onboard, we are pretty used to managing our power consumption but the losses in dc-ac-dc conversion is a frustrating one in this case. Most of the time we manage to build our own 12VDC power supplies for things but not for the power tools.

@@RedSeas I believe time wouldn't be an issue to me on an pacific crossing but it's true they are not really fast. Do you know the channel of Emily and Clark? Clark has just released a video where he's converting 12V to 20V for his Laptop with very cheap circuit boards. He's got a lot of nice solutions for low budget sailors. As you don't have that many subscribers I assume your budget is not that huge. I want to go cruising the world on a cat like an Leopard as well. Just still planning and working for it...

5000 nm is worth ONE swallow tattoo! You both had better get them in the Marquesas. Someone that recently crossed to Marquesas from La Paz, Mx, averaged just over 100 nm per day. Pretty slow sailing. I hope you have a better average. You are starting from farther away. Cheers! Until next week!
@RedSeas
@RedSeas Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s a pretty long way at over 4000nm (compared to sailing from Mexico which is only 3000nm) but we aren’t racing. Excited to soak up every moment we can.
