This spot has been on our bucket list well before we started sailing and we always dreamed of coming here one day with our own boat. Finally we get to experience this remote Polynesian paradise for ourselves. With its steep cliffs rising straight out of the ocean and its lush rainforest this truly is one of the sailing worlds great wonders.

Sailed to the Marquesas in 1977 from Hawaii, but missed Fatu HIva and this beautiful bay. However back then, there were so few sail boats that except for Nuka Hiva we were usually the ony sailboat. No internet, no gps or guide books, so we just sailed from isand to island, exploring various bays. Spent a few weeks before sailing onward to the Tuamotu Islands. That was my first ever time on a sailboat....never even sailed for a hour before jumping aboard. Too naive to realize how poor a craft we had. No radio and only sextants and a instruction book on navigation. Grand adventure for me. Nice to see so many videos.

That anchorage must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Was cool to see the bottom, never seen that before.

Am reading Herman Melville's book 'Typee', an acount of his sojourn in the Marquesas after he jumped ship there around 1840. Very nice to put pictures to his descriptions of the terrain and the people. Thanks!

I guess your present in the moment…seems almost magical. If one was a writer I think the anchor would not come up so easy at a place like that. Drift away as you will& thank you& good Health! Season of fall here. +2 tonight.

One of my most favorite places, ever. Been there twice in the past, in 1992 and 2006. The carvings are made with electric grinders, drill motors and a fair amount of artistic skill. I still have two wooden Tiki from my first visit, made by a man named Mark. He was an ambitious, entrepreneurial type with a wife and four children when I first met him. On my second visit I found out he had become the mayor. Good to see the rock faces are still there, guarding the Virgins of the bay.

I watch a lot of sailing channels but very few of those channels cause me to long to sail again like yours. The excitement of arriving to a new place is palpable in your video. I know it’s not easy but those moments make it worth enduring the weather, long watches, and never ending maintenance. Hope to see more of you soon. Fair winds…

A little recipe inspiration... When I make jerk chicken and fried plantains, I like to make a mango avocado salsa fresca with red onions tomato and lime juice. That same mango avocado salsa would probably be a nice side with a fresh caught and barbecued fish... Coriander leaves too if you're a fan

Between the mountains & your stone Tiki sculptures. There indeed was great deal of Phallic symbolism in this one! Ha! I'm thinking they probably should have stuck with the bays 1st name! I'm just saying. Big ups the the video editor! Great musical choices! Thanx guys.

G'day guys. Have just discovered your channel, and looks like I've got a lot of binge watching to do. Down here, in Nz Maori culture, the tiki represents the god of fertility. And I believe that all tiki around the Pacific Islands all represent the fertility gods. So if we take the original name of the bay you were anchored in, and looking at the shape of the other stone carving you have, along side the tiki, maybe just maybe, there's a story to be told.? Thank you for sharing. Until next time, take care.

Why are there so less trees on the mountainsides ?
@SailingBeaver
@SailingBeaver Жыл бұрын
Maybe a little to steep for that.
@MacZussie
@MacZussie Жыл бұрын
@@SailingBeaver Maybe a result of excessive logging by earlier Polynesians. In such steep environment the fertile soil will errode fast with the forecoming rainfalls leading to permanent deforestation. If not nature will re-boot its fertility program with smaller grass and some bushes on richer soil. Birds will carry on the seeds...
@SailingBeaver
@SailingBeaver Жыл бұрын
Yeah quite possible, seems to make sense. There must have been logging for farming around but some of the hillsides in Fatu Hiva are crazy steep.
