This week, we bring you a free video about what we personally believe are some of the biggest mistakes you can make when transitioning to the boat life. We figured we've learned so much about what can go wrong over the past four years, it'd be worth sharing it with others.
Doing some of these things won't get you into trouble or hurt you, but it may lead to a mighty pain in the neck ;) And some of these mistakes could definitely get you into some sort of trouble.

All points are valid, but you skipped the most usual mistake: Don’t think everything has to be perfect before you leave. Make sure the really important stuff is ready. The hundreds of not important items you can do later. Make sure you actually leave. To many spend their life preparing for life....You have to define a “good enough” situation, get to that situation by only working with those topics. As soon as possible, set a departure date. Then you leave.

In this part of the explanation (the "safe enough to leave" part) I usually add the "bigger boat-part", again: You don't buy the biggest boat You can afford, You buy the smallest You can bear longterm.

Great list! I keep in mind the words of Albert Camus: "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy." I enjoy fixing up my boat with the goal of an eventual ocean crossing, possibly a circumnavigation, and I find that the happiness from working towards this goal is itself satisfying. I hope to eventually get to my goals, but I find joy in what I am doing now as well.

My number one rule: always stay calm, never ever rush and always think first, then act safely. 99.9% of troubles start with a decision taken to quick. My number two rule: always have a plan A and a plan B and as well the plan C and always talk them through together with your crew beforehand. Then follow your plan. This is specially important for all manouvering, be it going in a marina, anchouring or any sail changes or the like.

My wife and I are planning to retire to the cruising life. We have a good deal of costal cruising experience (during our younger years) through the Gulf/San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington/British Columbia, but all your points are well taken! Cruising the Gulf/San Juans taught us the importance of watching tide charts and island currents! We have begun our research, and thank you both for you honest presentation of the “bewares.”

My two cents worth, Is never buy a boat from someone who has bought a bigger boat as they tend to strip whatever is good and sell the bones to a newby. Always buy from someone who is retiring or have bought a house, that way you get a full boat not half a boat.
@SailingKittiwake
@SailingKittiwake 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Something to consider / check when buying a boat. Although we have sold our first boat and we left every single bit of gear on board, as Skua was a 2-hour flight away 🙂 so there's exceptions. Ask what stays on board before buying 🙂
@manfredschmalbach9023

Problem here might be though: the retiring couple might see parts of their beloved boat an asset where I see liabilities only, starts with complicated electrics/electronics where I want kerosene lanterns and an easily backed-up or changed/upgraded handheld, ends with, often the case in warmer climates on american boats: the bloody A/C unit which lets a buncha unwanted wholes and bracketry behind once You go back "boat". An A/C would reduce the boat's price for me by the estimated costs of a crafty elimination/undoing. Not easily understood by a selling retiree, which makes the stripped carcasse next to the "sold with pot'n pan" the easier start for me - given the price is showing her state, of course. So it depends, as so often, on what You're looking for.

We started 21 years ago covered now 120'000 nautical miles and got 6 children on the way. We never owned a house or car and still living on the same boat, the TOPtoTOP Expedition-Sailboat Pachamama; she went through an "evelution from a baby to an adult". Thank you so much for the beautiful videos and great tips! i both agree and dissagree with the buying a sailboat without knowing if you will like it or not. Once you raise up the sails and turn off the engine you most probably WILL be hooked! So i found myself a boat i was interested in but i was a bit unsure while checking the boat out. The seller said "lets try the boat and see if you"ll like it". When he raised the sails and turned off the engine i said "im buying it, no questions asked." around 15 seconds later :D.

All good points guys. Nothing replaces experience and time gaining that experience. Perhaps another point is that it’s rarely the first thing that goes wrong at sea that leads to catastrophe. It’s usually a culmination of failures so staying calm and being able to deal with each helps greatly. I had the yacht masters theory ticket but there’s no substitute for getting the experience. The course tutor (whether on the yacht or in the class room) won’t be sailing with you !

Very good advises. I agree with all of it except for the knots. The more knots you know, the better, but we use 4 on a regular bases and about 8 to 10 in totals. For new sailor, I would also recommend to spend a week or two on a live aboard sail training before you buy boat. You learn so much when you spend time living and cruising on a boat with an instructor, it is worth every penny. You can do that in the paradise (Caribbean) and you might be lucky and not use the tool box for a week.
@manfredschmalbach9023
@manfredschmalbach9023 3 жыл бұрын
"... and not use the toolbox for a week" 😂 ... what would render it a non-sailor's experience ... "sailing" = the art of permanently mastering life-essential repairs with insufficient tooling and no means of getting spares out in an uncivilized, hostile wilderness others misunderstand as "paradise island" ...

Nice list. Though I think one could argue (regarding the non-essential systems) that if it's preventing you from sailing, it's probably not non-essential. For some, not having that air conditioner might be the difference between enjoying the ocean, and "rather be back on land". For others, not having the coffee maker might be the thing that ruins their experience (I suspect this would be the real killer for most, lol). It really just goes back to being willing to understand how those things work so that you can fix them.... Though for some, that might be enough to not want to sail, lol.

That's the cliff most couples I saw splitting "off the boat" wreck their marital sailing career on: Her ideas of "active retirement" or "active sabbatical" differ from his by far in terms of convenience essentials and felt "must haves". Talk that through, and do it with other cruising couples. Or, make it a singlehanded adventure for the one wanting to sail instead of ruining the relationship on route.

It is good to have a handy buddy or pro to work alongside you to refit an older boat after purchase, otherwise it is very tough and there will be endless mistakes; but I wouldn’t hire a pro, give him or her a list and walk away- do it so that you become proficient in every task and system. For safety always be thinking: where am I? What is around me? What is this task about? What tools or systems are at play here? What could happen here? What might go wrong? How serious would that be? How can I avoid that? STOP until you ha e a complete plan that is safe. The opposite, from a tired or thoughtless, or overly eager person is the jump straight in to a task and within a minute has been cut, hit, burned, electric shocked, or has hit the boat into something. Think first.

I found that never ending seasickness - the unability to grow sea legs at all - is very rare. Shipped changing crews of trainees for decades on and off and had only two "landlubbers" who threw up a fortnight non stop. All others adapted well one to three days in. So, it is not, as far as I encountered it. The unwillingness to go through it each time setting off again though, might bother an unwilling part of a sailing couple enough to finally disembark for good.

We are a quarter way through a circumnavigation in a $20,000, 40 year old, 34ft boat. The surprising thing is that the few boats that get this far are of similar age and size, whereas bigger, newer, more complicated and expensive boats invariably do not make it this far. Go small, go simply, go now.

@@manfredschmalbach9023 it's not like Covid and divorce don't exist in the sailing world, though. In the Caribbean, it can cost $500 in tests and quarantine processes to check into a country. Most countries are locked down or heavily affected (poorer ones will wait for vaccine donations). The economy is crashing everywhere, so your income is as affected - you need to work remotely, like many people do on land at the moment. Sailing couples split up all the time. The boat life isn't an escape from the real world, although it seems like it is sometimes.

@@SailingKittiwake Yes, Covid is about to ruin international longdistance longterm traveling for good, I'm afraid. And yes, traveling at all is going back to a thing only the notorious top 1% of today's neoliberal feudalism can afford, forced hotel quarantines, bought-in-advance vaccine documents from a greedy free market, rising "entry fees", obstacles to buy off and quickly growing corruption at borders and all. I didn't mention sailing as an escape, of course, and I'm sorry should it have read like so. What I was tryna express is: When the world goes rapidly down anyway, You can watch it happily from aboard as good as from a balcony or leaned on Your garden fence. That comment is valid only without crossing national borders on a regular basis, of course, as long as Covid turns nations into impenetrable fortresses like it currently does. So, my personal cruising schedule will change into "one country per season" Hope You're all well back on land. Cheers!

Don't let the mistakes get in the Way of the Way Maker. We are a particle of His Life, Jesus, "Nothing shall by any means harm you, if you believe." Includes dying, think of drinking sour milk, will hurt your feelings, but will not harm you. Bad bacteria does not grow in milk. Love Is what makes Our faith work."There is no Law against Love," "God is Love."

1:26 What is a cruising kitty anyways? What does owning a pet have to do with considering buying a sailboat as a liveaboard? This makes no sense, and then the video fails to even discuss the topic of pets aboard your boat.

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Don't Do "THIS"? What is the single "THIS"? Your list goes on and on. The "This" word means just one single item on your list.

Exactly out point, Zeb 🙂 of course we advocate following your dreams - that's what this channel is all about. We managed to do it on a shoestring. But there is indeed a big risk in the boat life - endangering ourselves and other people.
