Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you are actually allowed to swim with whales. Although we had seen many Humpbacks surface close to our boatwhile sailing, it proved impossible for one of us to jump in while the other handled the boat. Either the wave conditions were too rough or we were too far offshore. So we booked a whale tour in the Ha'apai island group of Tonga and Wow! What an experience. The operators knew where to find them. Knew when they could approach safely and a guide showed us how to swim out to them (since the boat can only get so close). We ended up jumping in several times and swimming out to them. One such encounter ended with a mom and a calf frolicking the the warm, shallow waters of Tonga. This is an experience we will never forget!

I've heard that when whales dive supper deep they end up where the giant squid live and that's where the whales get there scars from. Giant squid eat smaller squid and the deeper you go, the larger the squid are. That's what I heard anyways. I also heard that the giant squid are so large that they can kill whales. That's pretty amazing. If you check out the book called "The Last of the Blue Water Hunters", you will see what I'm talking about. It also has some very amazing photos that will blow your mind!

Thank you for sharing this experiance - be carefull with whales with calfes. You have become one of my favourite sailing channels. Just a correction about Tonga, it is not supposed to be pronounced "Ton Ga" like you and many others do. The Polynesian languages make use of the "Nga" sound. Tonga is pronounces "To-Nga". Cheers from Sweden

I had never heard of the Killer Cone Snails. I see empty cone sail shells all over our beaches here in Puerto Penasco, at the top of the Sea of Cortez and lots of live ones in the tide pools. I wonder if they are the same? Killers?
@SailingNahoa
@SailingNahoa 6 жыл бұрын
LOL. Probably, they have them all over as far as I know. Apparently the little ones aren't so vicious. But I haven't tested it out ;). Also sometimes we find different types of critters living in the shells, but after watching a documentary I am a bit more careful about picking them up when they are buried in the sand! ... Killers... :) - Ash

@@SailingNahoa It's a "Hebrew Cone" (common name), won't kill you (it might hurt enough you never pick one up again). You should get a book, there are about 6 that have Neurotoxins, the rest are harmless.

Take care with that lateral fast movement of the wale tail, its how they hit things, its like a tree falling in your head. The wale warned you, it was being chased by the boat and has its baby. SCARRY!

"swimming" with the whales = harrasing the whales. That stuff is illegal for a reason here in the US. I am lucky enough to see them on a regular basis so close that I can smell their breath. Love your videos though. They keep getting better.
