Tonga is truly breathtaking. Popular Fiji lies less than a thousand miles to the west yet Tonga is desolate. A hidden gem. An undiscovered paradise available to those willing to venture from the beaten path.
We finished off our month-long stay in Tonga in the absolutely breathtaking Ha'apai group. Probably some of the best kiteboarding we have ever seen. We only once had the pleasure of sharing a session with a fellow kiter.
As we leisurely cruised south through the islands we would meet up with other cruisers now and then. Inevitably the conversation always turned to the passage to New Zealand. When to leave. Where to leave from. Incoming weather and essentially everyone's fears of their passage down.
But by default, cruisers generally are a unique bunch of people who accept the challenge, are aware of the risks and keep the fear in check. Up next we set off to New Zealand in an absolutely short but windy weather window. Stay tuned for the next episode.

I've binge watched you guys for the last few days, it's incredible to see how much you've progressed since the Caribbean. Very sure-footed now. The team-work during the fishing scene was tremendous.

Your view point on fear is truly an eye opener! I think as a spiecies, humans have a great amount of emotions which often times is good. . .We also have the capacity of thinking of and planning for our next move . I believe that in general it is a survival strategy nature has given us to keep out of harms way. For some of us, this overpowers our curiosity and will to go beyond our percieved limits. Thankfully , some of us can overide this fear and go forward. Crossing oceans, going to the moon, exploring uncharted territories, all helping us evolve into better, bolder creatures. Goes to say, there is no benifit in worrying too much about what could happen in the future or evr what we do not control becaus it keeps us form enjoying the present. Fair winds you two! ❤️🇨🇦

That was epic and well done on eating all the Wahoo. Hand lining is difficult, a moment’s hesitation while you aim the gaff shot and the pressure is off the hook, bingo, fish escapes. Great editing on this episode, the kite boarding was spectacular.

I love the surfing documentary film called "Endless Summer". You are doing chapters of Kitesurfing's Endless Summer! You are living a dream of mine! I was working at Boeing in the mid eighties, and Dr. Doug McClean gave us a Noon Time Technical lecture he called "Off the Wall Hydrodynamics". He showed us a picture of a catamaran hull being pulled by a large stack of Flexi-Foil ram-inflated kites at the Johnny Walker Speed Sailing trials at Weymouth England. I saw his picture of a stack of twenty kites pulling a full sized catamaran hull 20 feet above the water, and decided waterskiing behind a stack of 3 Flexifoils was probably possible! So Billy and Cory Roeseler and I started trying it. I was a windsurfer and fairly skeptical that it would ever become a practical sport, but we kept trying it anyway. But Billy had a wave runner so we had a rescue boat. In 1986 Billy, Cory, and I ended up going to Weymouth. And Cory ended up winning the 10 meter speed sailing class with 3 Flexifoils and Jobe jump waterskiis. We met a Swiss sailor there, named Theo Schmidt, who was doing the same thing at Weymouth, ten years earlier! It's really hard to invent a new sport without finding out somebody did something similar before you! Ben Franklin was supposedly dragged across a lake by a big kite too! Anyway a bunch of Hawaiian Windsurfers saw Cory Roeseler win the Hood River Gorge Blowout 20-mile downwind race that next year. And someone over there invented an inflated kite and started riding a small surfboard with it, and kite surfing was finally practical! Some people have died kitesurfing, and hundreds of thousands have had a blast! Sir Richard Branson almost got Kitesurfing into the Olympics, and taught Obama how to water start! It's weird how we can all affect each other's lives, with a single ripple, you can affect an ocean.

Hi! It continually drives me crazy to see so many Sailing Vlogs in which folks land fish with such terrible techniques such as not even knowing if a bait casting or spin cast reel should be used above or below the rod!, not keeping their rod tips up so as to use the natural "spring effect" of the rod, not slowing the boat down when landing an especially nice or big fish, never allowing there to be any slack in the line or finally after getting that beauty next to the boat actually landing the fish with their bare hands holding the line etc. and etc. All of these basics actually can all be learned even by at the LEAST watching one or a few very short KZfaq video tutorials on How to Land a Fish and also learn to use basic tools like landing nets or gaffs to finalize securing that catch and putting it it in the boat. It was so refreshing to see a "Sailboat Fisherman" landing what would be the Fish Of A Lifetime for most anglers and getting it In your boat by doing things RIGHT. I just felt compelled to (instead of doing my norm of yelling at the TV Screen - "You Idiot") do what's rare for me by actually sending you a comment from this experienced old fisherman just in order to tell you - GREAT JOB!!! As delicious and important as it is at times to provide your boat with such a tasty, fresh and healthy, Omega-3 and vitamin rich, protein food source especially on those long sails accompanied with waning food stocks all Cruising Sailors should make these basic and easy to learn skills needed to get that beautiful bounty that you just managed to get on the hook actually In Your Boat! So many Sailing Vlogs have me wincing in pain and shaking my head in sad disgust as crew members demonstrate that they simply have NO CLUE or have made next little to no effort to learn "How to Land a Fish"! This time I just felt compelled to actually write a comment after watching you, a Live Aboard World Cruiser catch a beauty and then get it in the boat! A framed photo of you and your Beautiful Wahoo belongs on the wall of your boat!!! If the day comes that one of you two ever have a fishing question you'd like help with especially as to technique questions such as bait, line or leader rigging, best all around artificial baits or artificials used combined with live bait, or even tips on mounting your rod holders etc etc that are involved with Trolling in Salt Water I'd be pleased to offer my advice and share my experience by replying to any question you might have one day. Just email me at melvincurtice@msn.com. Finally I say that I sure enjoy y'alls videos! Thanks Melvin (Curtice) OH!!! and as a P.S. - I think I got so motivated so as to comment in such depth to you because of pure JEALOUSY! I've caught many Wahoo in my days but your big trophy beat any one I've ever caught! Ha Ha 😁

Nice work! Some (hopefully) constructive feedback... I noticed the sound levels tended to vary quite a lot, with music sounding higher than spoken voice which made it a bit tricky to hear what you were saying. I found myself having to turn it up and down quite a bit between sections. Great fish though! Glad they'll let you keep it when you come here (NZ).
