As a Qld'er, I was ever so glad to see local authorities here be open and flexible enough to listen to you and find a solution. Governments make blanket rules like "all travellers must...." But obviously sailing your family home here is different to stepping off a plane with a bag. Anyway, I hope quarantine goes quickly and that you have a great time here.

Can we talk about Renee's editing for a minute? She did a great job choosing clips to tell this story. I can only imagine the hours of reductive process to reach the final product. Obviously it wasn't a fun encounter this time but, as someone who communicates for a living, I can feel her pulling the direction of the content toward neutral and positive rather than negative. Bravo Renee. A+ work

You have a really good point. Australian citizens are still stuck overseas and have been for over a year and sure... they need to fly as opposed to this family cruising on in in their boat... but Australian citizens cannot leave our country and as far as I know our borders are closed.. how did they get in? How were they allowed? I bet they probably ticked the ‘working’ or working visa box upon arrival kinda thing but still, don’t understand in full why this family is allowed in? Hey guys! I feel your frustration! Today myself and eleven of my fellow crew mates started a two week quarantine in a hotel in Vung Tau, Vietnam. We’re here to collect a brand new ship (Built here) and deliver her down to Cairns. Due to Manning requirements, we cannot de-man the ship when we arrive alongside in Cairns, but must enter another 14 days quarantine (Ashore) and the vessel must also be deep-cleaned before the next crew arrives onboard. I do not understand why we can’t simply stay onboard on anchor for the quarantine period and do the deep clean ourselves, so we have absolutely no idea what is going to happen when we get home....
@hughdickson4816
@hughdickson4816 3 жыл бұрын
Because how would they ensure that you were honest and stayed on board? Why do you think people have to go to a hotel and be locked in their rooms? The only difference between quarantine on a boat and at home is that the boat is a dinghy ride or a swim away from the shore, as opposed to a front door away. The better argument is why, if you journey took longer than 14 days, do you need to quarantine at all - but again, how do they know that you didn't put ashore somewhere? Sure you an Sailing Zatara are completely honest and law abiding people, but some people are not - look at New Zealands experience with people breaching quarantine.

Escorted to Q rooms by NSW federal police where they had the only key in or out; signage in the room instructing you to remain inside in case of a fire alarm due to “risk of Covid (over fire!) etc. You know it’s bad when your team is all relieved to be leaving Sydney….for China. @Michael Harris So firstly, they were out for 10 days, not two weeks. Secondly, there's six(?) of them and bugger all social distancing, meaning, one person getting COVID could take a could of days to become mildly symptomatic, pass it on, a couple of day for the next person etc., meaning after 10 days, people could be infected and be so mildly symptomatic, or asymptomatic and not know it. This is avoided in quarantine, because they test people during their stay for that very reason. Thirdly, the Queensland govt are being asked to take their word for it. For all the govt knows, they met up with people en route in the ocean and got it at day 8, turned up before they're symptomatic and then spread it through the community, causing another lockdown. We know that simply asking people to do the right thing in quarantine doesn't work very well. Fourthly- and this is the most important one- as far as I'm aware, not a single person on this thread saying it's dumb to make them quarantine is a qualified epidemiologist, working in a team planning quarantine programmes. Neither am I- I'm making an educated guess, however, the medical professionals designing the quarantine programme might have entirely different reasons which I would defer to rather than baselessly dispute. Whether you know it or not, the stupidest shit you've read on this thread is actually a bunch of sailing enthusiasts somehow thinking they're more knowledgeable and better equipped than scientists and doctors who have spent their lives working to the top of their fields because said sailing enthusiasts think they have "common sense". You wouldn't take serious sailing advice on rounding cape horn from someone who doesn't sail, so why would you take quarantine advice in the middle of a global pandemic from people who aren't epidemiologists?

nope - and please don't think I agree with sea time not counting for quarantine either. The whole point of this quarantine has been to keep the disease contained, just like any number of other diseases in the past. Just there aren't the permanent quarantine places of sufficient size to cope with this one properly like there seem not to be in other countries either. That these hotels are largely vacant as travel has pretty much stopped makes them prime candidates to be quarantine places instead. Might be that people confined there should not be paying but that's another issue - containment is the main one and it must be done properly too. Great example here is that, in Victoria, where the state government oversaw the complete botching of hotel quarantine, the disease effectively escaped and killed a huge proportion of the roughly 900 people who have died of coven in Australia while nothing like that happened in the other states where the program was run much better. Effective quarantine works, pure and simple. Just doing to properly is not a trivial and cheap task.

The thing is, they don’t actually want you here. They have other things to do other than dealing with entitled dicks. Go home or somewhere else, or here’s an idea just go through the process which they did. Now your in a country with no restrictions and a Gov that actually gives a shit enough to apply resources to this.

In Australia we have a different system of government which is not based on a us style constitution of inalienable rights. The government legislates what you can or cant do. If you do the wrong thing with quarantine, you go straight to jail. There is no option for you to debate your "rights". We don't have a gun culture. Our system does has its faults but in the pandemic situation it has worked really well as all contacts are traced, quarantine is strictly enforced. Unlike the US debacle, Queensland with 5 million people is virtually COVID free. You are now free to move around Queensland and enjoy our hospitality. Happy to have you guys visit and stay a while. You will be most welcome everywhere and it is very safe.

Very well done sir ! As an Australian I new that there would be some sort of official red tap stuff up ! Many people in Australia will take a negative attitude to a yank expressing his basic rights to common Sense . Hopefully you receive none , Unfortunately in any 1st world government common sense is apparently is no longer possible ! It is sad when a little country like Fiji can show the way Hopefully the rest of you're stay is a much better experience

@Nicole l, They needed a Coronavirus test to get their Australian Visa so they're Covid negative! Then they spent weeks at sea in the middle of the ocean, no physical contact with anyone! So unless this virus can fly vast distances over water, common sense says that they're Coronavirus negative and they've been in "quarantine" at sea since leaving Fiji! Leaving the Zatara in the typhoon zone in the middle of the typhoon season is putting lives at risk! Please WORLD use facts and common sense!

In Fiji, cruisers are a Major part of incoming traffic so of course there is a more tailored system. In Australia cruisers are a tiny pin drop of incoming people so they haven't customised a system just for you. Yes it might be inconveniencing, but it's not hard to understand.

Some truth in this but, the infrastructure and resources are already in place at all ports of entry into Australia, so it is very easy to accommodate the sailors without any difficulty. What is missing is basic commonsense of the government departments, and to a large extent the employees that blindly follow their orders without question for fear of retribution.

Welcome to Oz !!! We've emigrated from Southern Africa recently to Queensland, and I can tell ya, I take my hat of for the government employees and police men here - super awesome chaps. Processing all incoming travellers will need tweaking especially with the diverse streams coming in, but must say the government has had a good handle on the spread so far, and would rather be here than anywhere else in the world.

@@timkiwi Well, you are both islands - it should be better. Far easier to track incoming travellers than all the illegals we have crossing our southern border. I had covid last feb - before everything was shut down. It was just about 3 wks before I felt normal - I didnt need to go the hospital or see a doctor, just rest and chicken soup. Of course, I kept to myself - just normal precautions - too many people here go to work when they are sick. There has been flagrant disregard by democratic governors in several states - sending covid patients to nursing homes to spread the disease. Over 50000 elderly died in states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, California due to their policies. Of course, we have an extremely unhealthy population in the US - high number of obesity/diabetes; not to mention other maladies
