In this DIY tutorial video we will show you how to install carpet style headliner on your boat. Installing new headliner can greatly improve the overall appearance of a boat’s cabin. We recommend using carpet style headliner/ hull liner for flat surfaces, but it is especially great for contoured shapes because it is shape conforming. Brian the owner of this 1982 Regal Ambassador 245XL will be heading up our DIY tutorial on how to install the carpet style headliner.

I have been installing carpet since 1964..This is a decent video..The better the area is prepped the easier and nicer your work will turn out..The blades he refers to are called "bloody Mary" blades..1/2 the trade uses them..I don't, because they are too easy to get cut..I use a utility knife and sharpen it often (with a dry stone)..The bloody Mary edge dulls much faster than the other blades..I have done many head liners and can not stress how much ventilation is needed..Always wear a mask and glasses..The worse part of the process is the position you have to be in while installing the carpet..I would suggest one other tool---a 3 inch putty flexible knife for smoothing bubbles and for tucking the edges..Take your time...DO NOT HURRY...Take on only as much work without getting fatigued--That is when errors are made..Don't be intimated by the job, it's not difficult..The material stretches and conforms..

Why is a headline needed? Can you use foam squares? Or just paint? My husband is in charge of of all the other stuff but in not wanting carpet. Can just painting it with marine paint work? Or is carpet a temperature control thing? Thanks ?

Very informative. Unless the butyl tape has improved considerably I wouldn't recommend it for the long term. I have a 1979 Tollycraft that used it and it hardened after about 20 years. They used it on the window frames, deck hardware and everything in between. Everyone failed as it lost its elasticity and adhesion. Lots of water leaks until it was all replaced. I replaced using Sikkaflex with good results. Silicone in a non mildewing marine formulation does work well but as you mentioned it is messy and you do need to tape off the area first. On the good side I haven't ever seen a quality silicone fail. Taping is a necessity and using a purpose solvent to clean any residual is a must. All and all I prefer the Sikkaflex in an adhesive marine grade. It maintains good life and is removable in the future if needed. 3M 4200 (not 5200 which is permanent and they do mean permanent!) is also a very good bedding agent and removable in future if needed. They even make a purpose solvent to dissolve the 4200 and 5200 the caveat is that it won't work unless you can get it directly on the sealant so a bedded object will be difficult if not impossible to use it on. Double check the suitability if using any of these under the waterline. Is your Dad still active? I enjoyed his DVD's on sewing. When I started it was pre You Tube and information on basic sewing was difficult to get and complex projects were really hard to obtain info on. He was a great source. Pass along my greetings to him if you get a chance. Thanks. Doug in Ketchikan, Alaska

@sailrite question, on this video there is no surface prep and on another headliner video they sanded the surface. Do you need surface prep for carpet?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 6 жыл бұрын
The surface must have anything that is loose removed. We do recommend brushing with a wire brush or sand paper and then using 3M Adhesive Cleaner #108984 at Sailrite for best results.

Question, my old Bayliner has this material and although it has held up well for forty years, condensation caused by leaks has caused moss to grow around my top deck windows enevitably staining the lining around said windpws.......is there any way to remove this staining? or do i need to do whats shown here and renew ?
@SailriteDIY

Sailrite offers headliner in both Marine and RV/Auto categories. What's the difference? Are color samples available?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Shelly Ellingson both categories Marine and RV contain the same headliners, so you can use all of them for both. Yes, we have samples. Just pick the ones you are interested in and go to the landing page online and click the button "Add Sample".

I know this video is 7 years old so not sure anyone will read this comment. I am hoping someone can provide me with a link to the same carpet he is using in this video. It is identical to the headliner carpet I just removed from my cuddy cabin.

head liner over wiring is horrible. Should have installed trunking for the wiring so the finish is smooth and the wiring can be replaced or modified in the future without destroying the headliner.

Keep it clean, but that is a difficult task. Mold will not grow to this synthetic material, but it will grow to dirt bedded in the materiel.

@@SailriteDIY wouldnt hurt to sand and even gelcoat the roof. Or at least smooth out some of the surface at the same time cleaning the dirt away.

Why is he using a dust mask for chemical vapors? DERP.
@oceantraderco
@oceantraderco 6 жыл бұрын
This type of headliner should be avoided at all cost. Not only will it leach chem-vapors for years, collect all odors, it will eventually fail and begin to sag. Sand and paint your interior.
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 6 жыл бұрын
We are not aware of any health hazards to this material. It will most certainly hold odors as it is like carpet. The material will not fail and sag. A poor quality installation with the wrong glue or too little glue can cause it to come loose. We agree that sanding and painting is an alternative but it does not hide imperfections which is why this product is often used.
@3DPDK
@3DPDK 6 жыл бұрын
Sanding and painting is a reasonable solution for a "weekender" or occasional use boat. For a live-aboard or extended cruising boat, some sort of insulation from heat caused by the sun transferring through the decks and hull is a "must". Even with air conditioning and white decks the over-head can heat up to in excess of 120 degrees in summer months. In the winter, a bare over-head acts like the freezer plate in the ice box. I am not completely happy with glued "fuzzy" material, either, because it is difficult to clean (I smoke and carpet and cloth yellows quickly), and inferior glues do harden and become brittle because of those temperature extremes. I have used removable panels where the geometry is not too complex, covered in foam backed vinyl similar to automotive head-liner. These panels can be removed easily and non-destructively to reach deck fitting hardware; the vinyl cleans easily, and a loose, thin layer of some form of insulation can be laid in between the panel and the deck material - even thin fiberglass insulation works well.
