Hey, it's Dan Radlauer, still alive, kicking and composing in Los Angeles. This theme… now 25 years old was recorded on analogue tape, but with many digital keyboards. The Sax was played by none other than Dave Koz, before he was the huge star that he now is in the Smooth Jazz world. If I remember correctly, I used various DX7 patches along with sounds from my Emulator II (or maybe III).. As long as we're talking trivia about this theme… it showed up in the first Addams Family film.. I think one of the Family went on Sally in the movie or something. Also,there was a law suit against the production company by someone who claimed that I was sent their demo that they had presented. Of course this wasn't true as the theme was based on a commercial I did for the show. But it was an interesting experience to have someone claim that I had copied their music. Here's a link to the legal review. Unfortunately, the example of the plaintiff's piece is actually the piece I wrote and produced, so I never even got to hear their music after the fact. I'm still working and loving my job, so I am eternally thankful to have been able to make this my life's work and work with some great folks including Kit. This music was written by Dan Radlauer. We recorded a number of different versions for use on the show and in my opinion this is one of the best talk show theme songs ever written. What you don't know is that we used the words..."Sally, she opens your eyes" as the template for Dan. He totally nailed it. Thank you Dan. Kit Carson - Director, Sally Jessy Raphael, 1987- 1996.

Sally, She Opens Your Eyes!

Phil Spector would be jealous of this... would anyone care to make a "Wall of Sound" version? If you know what I mean, the first sax line brings to mind the backing vocals from "Be My Baby" ("whoa-oh-oh-oh..."). To start things off, this theme could have an opening drum rhythm that starts that old song. Summing it up: this tune is like a jazzy version of that old 1963 hit. Also, the "DX7 Rhodes" (?) piano sound brings to mind the work of Canadian producer David Foster, best known for his work with the band Chicago's 1980s output ("Hard to Say I'm Sorry," "You're the Inspiration").

I think that this was part of a trend toward "jazzy" music in daytime TV shows that took place during the late 1980s to early 1990s. I say that because several other shows also had "jazzy" music -- including: General Hospital All My Children Donahue

I thought this version of the theme lasted until 1993, when that modified version of song was introduced? The remix was uptempo and had a bass line that made it resemble "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. It only lasted a season or two before it was replaced with that entirely different, mid-'90s era theme.

Have I got a question for carsonkit: I'm wondering if the so-called "DX7 Rhodes" FM piano sound heard in this version of the theme music is actually only a real Rhodes electric piano using the "Dyno My Piano" modifier? Or maybe even the "DX7 Rhodes" plus an acoustic grand piano mixed together?
