This vintage inkle loom has some quirks, I delve into why it may be this shape and a little bit of inkle loom history whilst adjusting it to suit the style of weaving I do.

Very interesting, thank you Sally. I hope Gareth gets over the chemo effects quickly.

Best wishes and good health to your family. I understand the rhythm of doctor’s calls and appointments and not being able to focus on a project for long. Thank you for your calm and somehow always cheerful voice. Sometimes I rewatch videos for that effect.

Wow Sally. I thought my bow string Jig was complecated. What you have there is quite easy to make. Half dozen in a day easily. Amazing bit of kit. Keep beautiful Sally. Great interesting trip to history. 👍

Excellent as always Sally. Doubly interesting as I acquired a floor standing version not so long ago from a friend. Wishing you both well and looking forward to the next video.

I'd love a floor standing one. This would require me to actually find the floor here 😳

I've scavenged some table legs that I think when cut in half might make a good inkle loom. And there's three of them. so I can get six bars and then figure out a heavy dowel from the hardware store as the last one. I'm concerned about wood hardness though. most scrap lumber in the US is pine. oak is extra. ;P while i watch you I'm spinning on my homemade, somewhat lopsided drop spindle. i have two whole sheeps worth of fleece rn! albiet with a LOT of sawdust stuck in them. but a pet detangling comb gets the worst of it out! i had an interesting heddle idea I wanted to hear your two cents on. the fancy feast catfood I buy has these lovely cardboard inserts to keep the cans from rattling and denting each other. plain single layer rectangular cardboard sheets. I looked at them and thought "with a metal hole punch used for binder papers, I might be able to make a heddle out of it!!!" likewise I found that the fabric quarters I like to use as dye subjects come with these little squares, and I grabbed all the ones I could find and whole punched them to make weaving cards. i just need to save up enough.

Thank you for sharing this, Sally. I've inherited an inkle loom and It has me completely confounded; your video cleared up a few things. Mine is closed on both sides and I can now see it's missing a movable tension post. I like your use of a rigid heddle and am going to give that a try when I get my inkle loom sorted and warped.

This video was enjoyable and informative! I would love to try weaving in this style someday. Thanks for sharing :)

This was fascinating. I didn't know you could use a rigid heddle in one of these inkle looms instead of the string heddles. I have an inkle loom that I've warped up once and I don't really know how to use it to weave on so I must learn.
@SallyPointer3 жыл бұрын
Most simple looms are just a way of supporting threads. Inkle looms can usually be used with string heddles, rigid heddle or weaving tablets, the sort of work you might do backstrap can usually be transferred to an inkle loom quite successfully.

@@SallyPointer That's handy to know. Now all I need to do is practice my weaving until it looks good and I know what I'm doing.

could you make a tutorial on inkle looms? and maybe how to build one from scratch?

sees the printed out article on the video... glances over at binder with printed out instructions for weaving... hmm, something feels familiar .

I wonder sometimes what the authors of these early-mid twentieth century articles would say if they knew how widely their words were still being circulated, and how much we occasionally blame on them 😆

Inkle looms actually look simple enough for many people to make at home - do you think it’s manageable? Also, nice quern at the end! Is it stone? Cement? I’m so nosy!
@SallyPointer3 жыл бұрын
The quern is stone, you can see one similar at work in the video on acorn flour, I've got several lying around where I can trip over them! You can definitely make looms at honey, but do look at different styles first, there have been a lot of improvements in tensioning methods in recent decades that can make weaving easier

my ex is an amaturewoodworker and made my inkle loom based on images from online shops combined with that very article in this video. so yes, an amature woodworker can make an inkle loom without much issue and it will be a good piece of kit.

With this particular loom it was all about the journey of exploration, it was never meant as a one step 'how to' video, but thank you for watching.
