In this video I walkthrough exactly how my Salt Marsh Heron 18 Poling Skiff is rigged out. Salt Marsh builds all of their boats to order so each one is unique. This is how my is outfitted.

Awesome walk-through! I have a jackplate and powertech on my Heron 16 and i can jack up super high! You definitely have a ton of room to raise your engine. Especially with that stepped transom pushing the water up. One other thing i did was added a cavitation plate on my Tohatsu to hold the water around the prop and help with trim. It acts as an extra tab. Love my Saltmarsh! Wouldn't trade it for anything..

Since I filmed this I raised it to the top holes on the motor and man it performs way better! It would be hard for me to ever want a different boat. I mean I would like to have the new Caicos too for shallower applications but that is a but I haven’t hit the lottery yet lol.

If the boat ever needs gelcoat repairs can you make a video on the materials you like to use and the steps to fix it?

Very nice walkthrough RTA. I have a question that really applies to just about any flats skiff style boat. I currently have an old Carolina Skiff J16, and am looking to upgrade & modernize to a slightly larger, more comfortable fishing platform. I live in the northern Va area and frequently push into very skinny marsh water, but also need a boat good in chop. Skiffs like this seem ideal in this regard. However, I NEVER see seat sockets on these boats. It seems they are simply not intended for all-day use, or for anglers that can't stand all day. I'm 65 and very fit, but find myself needing to sit on occasion. Because we live a couple of hours from the Chesapeake Bay area, when I go out it's an all-day affair. I get the impression that many flats anglers typically go out for just a few hours at a time, which is decidedly not my situation. What I would want would be fore and aft seat sockets, an easily removable poling platform and a power pole or equivalent no higher than the engine cowling. The last two because sometimes we fish tidal rivers for bass and the rear angler needs to be able to sidearm cast under overhanging branches, and the platform/power pole make that nearly impossible. So that's the lengthy background to my question - can this or other flats skiffs be customized to support front and rear seats, and can poling platforms be readily removed when needed?

Hey! You can totally have them built or rigged with seats and seat sockets. The reason a lot of these style boats are not that way is because they are designed for sight fishing and most of us spend all day standing, even on platforms on the bow and stern. The higher you are the better and further you see. They do handle chop well, but the primary focus is to be a poking skiff which means super skinny water and light enough to move it around with the pole. You can also get a removable platform but everything drives the price for sure. If you are not fishing in 10” or less most of the time and you do not plan to pole the boat a lot, something a bit larger and with more deadrise might be more comfortable in chop and still get you in a foot of water. If you do plan to pole and want to get super skinny but need to cross some open water to get there, then something like this may be perfect and you could have it built to suit exactly what you are looking for. I have friends that have added the pedestal seat on the front especially! Hopefully they helps!

Poling* skiff not poking lol. Also, the platform would need to be designed to be removal with basically base plates mounted permanent most likely. This is the cool thing about working with a custom skiff brand though. Anything is possible!
