Mr Pool School, A salt water pool has a salt water chlorinator that converts salty water into chlorinated water! So you end up with chlorine in the water to sanitize the pool. Salt does not "purify" the water at all, that's what the filter does. The pros of running a salt water pool is a reliable on site generation of chlorine without the need to add chlorine every few days, deal with bleached clothes and remove the need to manually handle toxic chlorine. The main chemical cost is roughly an inexpensive bag of salt and a splash of acid every month. Not recommending a salt water pool system is not recommending a hassle free, safe and reliable solution to keep a pool sanitized!

Not sure I'd agree with that. Seems like even the "new" improved salt systems just don't hold up in our Arizona heat nor do they seem to keep up with the demand if the pool gets a lot of activity during those hot summer days. Not saying you're wrong just saying that's been my experience even to this day.

I agree, our salt cell seems to have gone out and it's less than two years old. It's much easier to put a few pucks in a float then spend time worrying about a salt cell.
@Paggy6668
@Paggy6668 4 жыл бұрын
Until it's not. Pucks add cya constantly and once it's in the pool, there's no getting it out without a drain and refill. People who use pucks exclusively can easily see CYA climb to unmanageable levels in 6 weeks to 2 months. You're better off using liquid chlorine because it adds NO stabilizer (CYA).
@nmcalmond
@nmcalmond 4 жыл бұрын
@@Paggy6668 Never had a problem with that and been using them for years. Maybe it depends on your weather. In southern Nevada, where I'm at, I'm more worried about the effect of the direct sunlight on chlorine and with pucks I know we'll get a slow steady release. No disrespect, that's just what works for me.

@@jasonjanes3256 You still need some stabilizer, but it's better to set it at the right level initially so you don't have to worry about it. Adding pucks will raise that CYA level with every puck, which in turn will make your FC less effective as the CYA climbs. Using liquid chlorine or a SWG is the way to go. It adds no additional CYA, so you can always shoot for your target FC level without worrying about a moving target (which is what happens when the CYA climbs with pucks). Pucks are more ideal for climates where you close the pool in the winter because you drain nearly half your water to get it below your pipes so the water doesn't freeze and burst the pipes. In this case, you are lowering your CYA at least by half every time you do this, which will keep it much more manageable.

I saw there was a comment that said you got it wrong about salt systems and they said salt systems are the bomb everything he said about salt systems are true there is some climates where they do not work well and do not last so it depends on where you live in the country if you are up north they are fine but they are not fine in Florida and arizona. And if you insist on putting one in make sure you put in one that has a cell that rates twice the gallons of your pool or more . So at least it does not have to work that hard kind of like going up a hill in a truck with a small motor your foot will be to the floor the whole way but if you have a truck with a big motor AKA a larger cell than you need in a . chlorine generator you can practically idle up the hill which prolongs the life of your system
@Paggy6668
@Paggy6668 Жыл бұрын
You should ALWAYS get a SWG rated for at least double the size of your pool. That rating is based on the cell working at 100% capacity with the pump running 24/7. That will be the most chlorine the cell will generate in a 24 hour period. By sizing it to double your pool size, it gives you the option to run your pump less, or to use a variable speed pump (VSP) at low RPMs and run your cell at a much lower output %, which will extend the life of the cell.

Hey can you help? We just installed a brand new Intex 1600gph sand filter saltwater system and it keeps saying low salt. I tested it with strips but I am getting bad tests I think. One what should I use to test the salt And 2 if I have enough salt what is wrong with the low salt alarm. Brand new system
@Paggy6668
@Paggy6668 4 жыл бұрын
You should use the Taylor K1766 salt test kit to test your salt level. Your cell may be dirty, especially if you have high calcium hardness in your pool. I had to clean a salt cell that was barely a month old due to calcium build up on the titanium plates in the cell. After cleaning them with a 4 to 1 water to muriatic acid solution, everything went back to normal.

A Salt pool is still Chlorine. Salt is NaCl....Sodium Chloride...It just automatically generates Chlorine as long as you run your pool pump. So once I found that out I decided not to get one. I have maintained my pool for 6 summers now in Phoenix. I use a combination of Liquid chlorine and tablets to maintain my Chlorine levels. I also use Calcium hypo only when pool has zeroed out of Chlorine to bring the levels back up. Good video tho.
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 5 жыл бұрын
Dathan Valdez true. My understanding of salt is that the sodium chloride in salt is naturally occurring. And the synthetic chlorine used in tablets etc. is not exactly the same and is missing a side of the molecule and although it’s pretty much the same it’s not exactly the same which is what causes the burning eyes and dry hair etc you get with tablets etc. Also I try to stay away from Cal Hypo mainly because of the calcium in it. We already have such hard water in my part of AZ using cal hypo can also raise the already high mineral content of our local water which can lead to more mineral deposits at the water line of the pool and the mineral growths that can happen on the bottom and sides of the pool.

So the burning eyes you get is not actually from Chlorine nor the smell it's from Chloramines...and yes I understood actually what I wrote I don't think you understood. So in AZ when your pool zeroes out of Chlorine especially during monsoon season and heavy pool season what do you use to bring Chlorine levels up fast?I don't like Cal hypo either and only use it on rare occasions. I started using a product called Chlorine free sun shock last year from Costco that works extremely well fighting algae and maintaining Chlorine levels. Copper actually kills algae and reduces chlorine usage by at least 50 percent. I feel auto chlrorinators/salt pools are a waste and that's just my opinion. A properly balance pool is what matters the most. Google what Chloramines are and then see what actually burns your eyes and creates the Chlorine smell in your pool. To fix this problem you can use Leslie's free and clear. Also to test if you need it use the Aquachem 7 strips. When you total and free Chlorine re out of balance that's when you need it or when your eyes burn and you smell chlorine. But hey I'm only trying to help people and help them save money and increase there understanding of chemicals. Everyone can do whatever they choose in their own pools. I'm only trying to help.
@chrisveldkamp
@chrisveldkamp 5 жыл бұрын
Dathan Valdez if you want to save money then research having a salt chlorinator, after the initial hit you will only need a bag of $7 salt maybe once a year. That is all I ever need and my pool never runs low on Chlorine, ever. I don’t even have to shock mine. We have been having record hot temperatures in San Diego as well and I still never have problems with low chlorine levels. So if you truly want to save money and swim in silky smooth water every day then salt is the way to go.

I just had a intelliChlor IC40 salt cell installed yesterday on the return side of the pool heater. If I have the heater on and the salt cell on at the same time, won't the life of the salt cell be heavily reduced in this configuration? Thank you for the great videos too!
@PoolSchooler
@PoolSchooler 3 жыл бұрын
Did you ask the installer why they chose to put it in there? Sometimes it’s the only choice of where to put it. Do you want it on the return side past the filter where it goes depends on your pipe and plumbing configuration. Personally I have never experienced nor heard of that aspect reducing the life of the cell. The main thing that can reduce the life of the cell is not cleaning it. Other than that I don’t think it’s really a problem.
