FYI - The term “salted nukes” likely comes from the legend (possibly true) that when the Romans finally captured Carthage after several brutal wars, they not only destroyed the city, but they also salted the fields so that nothing could grow there - thereby making the area uninhabitable for a long time and preventing Carthage from rising again. A Cobalt bomb or “salted nuke” would have a similar effect - not only destroying the targeted city but also making the location uninhabitable for a long time.

Gerard Monsen Yes, they did salt the Earth but salt was worth more then Gold an Silk and the time. They didnt cover their fields. They simply sprinkled a little as a symbol. Im pretty sure not to much later the Romans farmed that area. Or someone, I cant remember.
@gerardmonsen1267

Gavin, the point I was making was that the *legend* was that they salted the fields to make it impossible for Carthage to ever come back (or at least not for a long time). Whether they actually did it by using irrigation techniques to bring seawater to all the fields or not is immaterial. I was simply mentioning that the name "salted nuke" comes from this legend and has the same idea - not only destroying an area but making it uninhabitable for a long time. As far as the practicalities of salting the fields, the Romans could be both ingenious and vindictive if they wanted to be. Pure refined salt was certainly expensive, but if they had the will to water the fields with more than plentiful seawater, they had the capability and motivation to do so.

@@gavinstarks2761 Takes a pretty small amount of salt to ruin a field. The problem is that rain washes the salt down into the ground deep enough to be harmless after just a few weeks or months. More than fast enough that planting the next season is perfectly fine.

@diebusterfan645
@diebusterfan645 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the concept was to make the area hard to re-inhabit, though in practice, it was never actually done with salt to an entire community, as using that much salt would have been an unreasonable investment based on the ancient value of salt. Instead, the often burned fields and buildings, maybe ruined a well, and threw some salt on the ground symbolically. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salting_the_earth

I think it could be a bit more politically complicated than that. Imagine the potential condemnation from the populous in a western democratic nation, all the while the military could want the potential uses on even just a smaller tactical level for the assured area denial. Maybe not the most likely scenario, but seems plausible.
@secondsein7749

I think because salted nukes are still nukes, they are treated the same in terms of how to deal with it. I mean, superpowers would flip out if a small country start stockpiling nukes, regardless of type. And not like superpowers can force other superpowers to destroy their nukes anyways.

To put this in a better perspective - old civil defense manuals wanted people to shelter in place/fallout shelters for about two weeks for the radiation to drop to a level where you could spend a few hours outside and thus be able to move to a safer area. Cobalt bombs were meant to raise that time to a few years, which would be impractical for almost everyone.

These used to be called “dirty bombs”, then they figured out that all nuclear bombs produce radioactive fallout, & that every atomic bomb was a “dirty bomb”!
@davidhenderson3400
@davidhenderson3400 4 жыл бұрын
No, a dirty bomb is something different. A dirty bomb is NOT nuclear. There is NO nuclear blast. A dirt bomb is a bomb that contain highly radioactive material. Nuclear waste would make a good materiel for dirty bomb. The highly radioactive material is packed around a regular explosive such as C-4 or HMX or something. The blast just spreads radiation all over the place. People die days or weeks after the event from radiation poisoning. A salted nuke would be the ultimate dirty bomb.

MisterCorrin what’s it salting it with... ...the now radioactive extra material that the bomb was salted with. But it’s not named after the practice of salting the earth with sodium chloride so as to make the soil inhospitable for growing. Sodium chloride isn’t something you would salt a nuclear weapon with. It’s called a salted bomb because you’re sprinkling in, so to speak, a relatively tiny amount of extra stuff which isn’t necessary for the bomb to work. Like salt is something extra you sprinkle on food which is optional.
@MstrCorrin
@MstrCorrin 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I knew it wasn't literally tablesalt, just thought the reference was to "making it so nothing will grow here for years to come" - likening it, not actually saying it was the same thing. Thats why I commented; admitting a TIL moment rather than arguing against the videos reasoning.

Thank you, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who knew, and some examples would be how he made out that there is a difference between "atomic bombs" and "fusion bombs", which is actually a pretty common mistake unfortunately, but the truth is that there are three different types of bombs, pure fission, fusion boosted, and thermonuclear, and they are ALL atomic bombs, they are all nuclear bombs, they all work by manipulation of atoms and their nuclei and the terms "atomic"and "nuclear" are blanket terms that apply to all three of them, and of course all three can be used to make "salted" weapons. Also, it's incorrect to say that the neutrons produced by the fusion reaction in a thermonuclear bomb are not used, they almost always are used (in all but the so called "clean bombs" anyway) in that they are absorbed by a depleted uranium "tamper" situated around the fusion secondary stage body, and even though depleted uranium is inert and non fissile (as it is almost entirely the U-238 isotope) it absorbs so many neutrons that it is forced to fission anyway, and this is actually where 60%+/- of the yield of bombs like Castle Bravo came from. Of course there are the "clean bombs" too (which came about more or less because of the radiological disaster that was Castle Bravo) which actually got the vast majority of their yield from fusion itself, with only enough fission involved to get the reaction up and going (the famous three stage 50 megaton tsar bomba was such a device) and therefore produced very little contaminating radiation. That was far more detailed than it probably needed to be, and I could go on and on with far more detail, but I think this is enough for now...
