Alcohol and water are completely miscible, until you add potassium carbonate. Hydrogen bonding is always the answer.

You managed to combine ionic interactions, hydrogen bonding and the separation of two miscible solutions utilising the difference in one short video. The affinity the different ends of water molecule have for the (K2CO3) 2K+ CO3- was also nicely explained. Those small interactions really do matter... and visualising them clearly is the key to making chemistry much more interesting. Thanks :-)

is there a test like this you can do in a test tube to seperate or test for methanol in ethanol want to test for the methanol in ethanol even trace amounts

I think these video's are great, but unfortunately no one answers the questions people have about the experiment. I know this series is intended for teachers, but many of us watching are not and a response to some of the better questions would help us out a lot. Thanks.

So has this in effect concentrated the methanol by separating the water, and if so is this a viable option to remove water from methanol?
@spookywizard4980
@spookywizard4980 6 жыл бұрын
Tommaso Petrella somewhat, but you'd have the potassium carbonate solution to deal with. Easiest way would be just to distill methanol from the water because they have very different boiling points. The methanol produced in this is still 'wet' with water, not all of it separates

Are there any other salts besides potassium carbonate that work for methyl/ethyl alcohol? I'd like to try this demonstration and I have a variety of salts but I'm lacking potassium carbonate.

But why doesn't the hydroxyl group on the methanol also hydrate the ions?
@MsTommyknocker
@MsTommyknocker 10 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. I was wondering about that myself. I think it's because potassium carbonate is ionic, "with a big I" whereas methanol will have that non-polar methyl group. All things equal the most polar things (water and KCO3) will stick together
@priyankighosh6877
@priyankighosh6877 7 жыл бұрын
MrTommyknocker That's because water has a polar covalent bond i.e., it has slight positive and negative charge due to the high electronegativity difference between hydrogen and oxygen. Whereas methanol has a non-polar covalent bond, meaning no charge between the hydrocarbon and hydroxy group.
@spookywizard4980
@spookywizard4980 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Molter It's because methanol is less polar than water. The -CH3 group is more nonpolar than a hydrogen would be on the water.

How about salt(NaCl) instead of potassium carbonate?
@spookywizard4980
@spookywizard4980 6 жыл бұрын
K.U. Kim I was wondering why they didn't use it. It would still work, but perhaps not as well. Sodium chloride would only dissociate into 2 ions, Na+ and Cl- whereas potassium carbonate dissociates into 3, two K+ and one CO3(2-)

Tons of salt, too much efforts to separate alcohol from water. This is not sustainable at industrial level, unless you distill. Remember that if you acidify It, you will go back to one phase again
