There's Space Between Molecules!

Mass and energy are conserved, but volume is not. Mixing alcohol and water demonstrates the principle, and the particle model explains it.

This is a great demo and about the only thing that could improve it would be to use something more dense than ping pong balls so they'd have less tendency to move upwards, ending up above the rim of the beaker.

Never thought about that... you should also compare it to carbonated soda. speaking of witch what were those bubbles? Steam of some sort due to the reduction in presser?

William Haney Water and ethanol are able to contain different amounts of dissolved oxygen (100% ethanol can hold much more dissolved oxygen than water). A mixture of water and ethanol holds less dissolved oxygen than the same amount of water and ethanol hold when not mixed. That is, mixing them decreases the amount of dissolved oxygen able to be stored in the solution. So oxygen is released as a gas, forming bubbles!

I think methanol evaporates that may be the reason for reduction in the height of liquid in the tube.. correct me if I am wrong

Dinesh parasu nope it’s all bcz of the molecules of methanol smaller than water.

The molecules of water are smaller than the alcohol molecules and fit in the spaces between. He also gives the reason: they can make more hydrogen bonds.
