Sacha Baron Cohen chose Kazakhstan because he knew that most westerners know nothing about it so he could make up any old shit he wants... I can get how Kazakhs could feel insulted byt that choice even if it wasn't the intent, especially now that I imagine "Borat" will get mentioned to anyone who identifies themselves as a Kazakh if they travel anywhere in the west.

It's funny because I think something the first man you interviewed really applies to Americans nowadays - "you have to have self-sarcasm...your nationality....you shouldn't take very seriously". I think Americans get caught up in the idea that we're the 'greatest country on earth' so much that sometimes we refuse to see its flaws. If anything, Borat 2 is more aimed at making fun of Americans, and I think most Americans understand that the 'Kazakh' people portrayed in the movie are just an abstraction of a 'foreigner' - the end of the films do have a disclaimer saying that it doesn't actually represent Kazakhstan or it's people. But I get how it would be insulting to people - I particularly enjoyed the sassy woman at 7:26 lol This is such a great video, cool to see other parts of the world via KZfaq since Americans aren't allowed anywhere right now 😩😷

I am Kazakh and live in Almaty. I really liked the movie Borat, especially it was funny at the beginning. I understand that this film does not ridicule Kazakhstan, but ridicules the Americans themselves (perhaps I don't remember the Jews either, I'm sorry if I made a mistake). But still, after I saw that several countries celebrated "Borat Day", I was stunned to see how people trample our state flag, and put it like panties on an inflatable Borat in London. I wondered "why?", "Why are they doing this?" Please do not do this, you are insulting the whole country and its nation.

Very few people will come away from the movie thinking that this is how Khazakstan really is in real life, it's pretty ridiculous to think about it honestly. I hope it brings more people to understand what the people and culture is really like there. Like the first guy in the interview said it’s actually a good PR for Kazakhstan. I didn’t kno anything about Kazakhstan prior to watching Borat. It got me curious , I surfed the Internet. It turns out Kazakhstan is a beautiful country with amazing people polar opposite of how the movie has portrayed it, which I knew and any person would have known if they had any common sense. Then again if you know Sacha Baron Cohen the guy who played Borat, he’s deservingly famous for playing over the top characters. Another thing one should kno is he is Jewish himself. Therefore one should kno Borat is nothing but a fictional character who happens to be from Kazakhstan. Also the main goal of the movie was to show true Color of America, deeply rooted racism that exist within. Borat is not a movie about Borat and Kazakhstan, it’s a statement about America. To end it on good note Kazakhstan is amazing and don’t be hating on Borat. Its art, it’s cinema.

It’s just comedy.

I really respect how metered and well thought-out many people's responses were. I'm an American, but I actually first saw Borat while I was stationed with the Air Force right on the border in northern Kyrgyzstan. I immediately recognized that his depiction of the region had no basis in reality, of course, but in the end, I always considered the Borat movies spend more time making fun of America than Kazakhstan, because the whole point is to bring out the xenophobia of ignorant Americans who hear any country ending in "stan" and assume it's dirty and backwards. In fact, I think that's exactly WHY he chose to play a Kazakh. That being said, I haven't been back to Kyrgyzstan since I helped shut the base down in 2014, and I want to go back someday. I'd like to visit Kazakhstan as well whenever I do.
