This video is an overview of my first saltwater / RODI mixing station. I also discuss a few topics related to my build and other items regarding this system in my garage and my reef tank that is coming soon. I am new to the hobby, and I built this system based off of ideas and designs from the internet. This is my very first KZfaq video attempt in making content related to my hobbies. It's obviously unscripted and not planned. I am hoping to start making more videos when I have things to share. Enjoy & Happy Reefing!

I'm about to do this Mixing station. Currently I have a smaller, portable system, but when I look at this setup I think, it's gotta be a ***** to clean that salt water tank out after each water change. I think most put them up on blocks so they can rinse them out and clean them easier. In your setup It was a great idea to do the union at the top inlet and at the bottom by the pump. You also need to add a heater or else you won't get the right specific gravity due to the temperature plays a part in the salinity when you try to match your tank. Thanks for taking the time to post the video.

You might consider a heater to heat the saltwater to the same temp as your tank before filling your tank,and not sure how hot it gets in your garage in the summer ,mine water in my garage was getting in the 90 degree area in the summer so I moved my storage container in my utility room,

This was really cool. I appreciate you going into details about everything that you're doing because it helps us that are trying to decide. Only thing that I see that may be an issue is algae growing from the sunlight. Is that a possibility? Everything else looks dope. Congrats. I'll be building mine soon.

nice setup. I was planning on setting up a 30 gallon cone bottom tank to mix my salt. But the shipping is expensive. I have the same pump , I'm sold I guess you can just add tap water to flush the salt from the bottom of the tank...

Don;t know if you still have this set-up but you may want to install a pipe that gets close to the bottom of the tank so you dont have water falling when the water level gets low.

Do you have a list of parts for the plumbing ? I’m looking for a similar setup. It would be nice if you can share the list.
@oldmetalsvidz
@oldmetalsvidz 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't have a list but here is what I can see from looking at the setup. 3-4 - sticks of 1" PVC pipe 2 - 1" male/thread to slip fittings 9 - 1" 90 degree elbows 4 - 1" ball valves 4 - 1" solvent unions 2 - 1" 3-way T fittings 2 - 1" female thread to slip fittings for connecting to the pump Pump is a PanWorld 200ps I also used 1" cam locks from BRS to adapt to the hose which I have now converted to a python hose system instead of the 1" tubing from the video as it was too stiff and not very easy to work with. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions. If I had it to do over, I might use a self priming pump or put the containers up on cinder blocks to allow for gravity to help. It's only an issue when the water level is very low and air is trapped in the lines but otherwise it's worked pretty flawlessly for all this time.

Sure you have figured it out by now but for others, take a hair dryer and warm up the clear tubing to help straighten out the kinks.
@oldmetalsvidz
@oldmetalsvidz 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes I thought about doing that, but in the end I opted to return that hose and get a 50 ft python water changer and take off the part that connects to the faucet. I have the on/off valve included on the python which is very useful. The python also rolls up very easily. The only downside is the restriction of flow compared to a 1" diameter hose, but it's plenty fast for doing water changes and RODI topoffs. Thanks for watching! I am planning to do an update soon as I've finished and improved this water change system.

Great job. It’s been about year now. Any updates? I’m about to do the same and also in Texas, did the water get too hot in the summer? Thanks.
@oldmetalsvidz
@oldmetalsvidz 4 жыл бұрын
Matt Newhouse thank you!! In the dead heat of summer the water can get too hot to pump directly to my tank. In that case I pump into the house into a brute trash can setup next to my tank and wait for the water temp to equalize to the tanks temp. As far as anything I would have done different, there are a few things but nothing too major. I’ll try to do another video update when I have time!!
@mattnewhouse6269
@mattnewhouse6269 4 жыл бұрын
oldmetalsvidz Awesome, thanks. I figured at worst I would just have to do smaller changes more often in the hot months to avoid moving the total tank temp too much. Then brute can works too. Appreciate the video!

From what I understand R.O. water just has a harsh taste. What water bottling companies do is... They start with RO water, then there chemists add back in different nutrients & compounds to give it a desired taste. That's why different bottled waters taste different from one another, each has their own Formula.

@oldmetalsvidz
@oldmetalsvidz 5 жыл бұрын
National Reefing if I had it to redo over again, I’d set the containers up on cinder blocks and plumb it slightly different due to a few issues I’ve encountered. Nothing major, but I’ll probably modify it eventually and let gravity help a bit !! Thx for watching

@oldmetalsvidz
@oldmetalsvidz 4 ай бұрын
I would drop a heater in the salt mixing container the day before my water change during the colder months if needed. In the summer id have to pump the water into a trash can inside and get temp correct. It would be best to have this system in a climate controlled area but I had to use my garage unfortunately.
