Join me to view the 10 different varieties of Salvia we have in our gardens. A gardening You-Tuber I follow asked the question if you could only have one plant in your gardens, what would it be? For me that would be the wonderful Salvia. There are 100s of varieties that will perform beautifully in the garden. Since I garden for hummingbirds and butterflies, this plant would be my "go to" plant. What would your plant be? (See hardiness zone info below).
Additional information for Salvia in my yard:
Salvia Amistad - zone 8-11
Salvia Amante - zone 7-11
Salvia Leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage) - zone 8-10
Salvia Leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage "Santa Barbara") - zone 7-11
Rockin Fuchsia (Salvia Hybrid by Proven Winners) - zone 9b-11b
Maraschino Salvia (Bush salvia) - zone 6-10
Mysty Salvia - zone 7a-10b
Mystic Spires Blue - zone 7-10
Forsythia sage (Salvia madrensis) - zone 7 -11
April Night (Salvia Nemorosa) - zone 5-9
Salvia Farinacea (Victoria Blue) aka Mealycup Sage - zone 8-10
I have done two follow-up videos.
1. The first one is 11 weeks later than this one so you can see them holding up to the high summer heat and humidity: • Salvia, my go-to plant...
2. The second one is in the fall (October) so you can see how they survived our brutally hot summer:

So glad you enjoyed the video! I like to go to the big box stores like a Home Depot or Lowe's, but I typically don't find Salvia there. I have always gotten my Salvia from a local nursery. Hi! It truly is the workhorse of the garden! I just appreciate Salvia more each year. I haven't been able to get rid of my Salvia Farinacea though, even though I really don't care for it. I have been adding natives to my garden and appreciate all the new insects that are in it. That is probably why I just can't get rid of the Salvia Farinacea.

Enjoyed the tour! Though I must admit, I like to think of plants in the garden akin to music. We don’t tend to like a particular song because it has a certain note in it, but rather the composition of all parts creating something remarkable in symphony. Salvia does help to carry a nice rhythm though, with it’s bright, showy, and productive nature! Fits great into a New Perennial Movement style planting! Joyful gardening!

I love monarda. I think its related to the Salvia, sage family. The flowers are amazing and the colour I had this summer, was bright coral red and it flowered constantly. The leaves actually have a purple tinge from the centre out. The are drought tolerant and the other name for monarda is bee balm. Starting to like Salvia...had one with Indigo blue flowers that did really well too.

Monarda (Bee Balm) ... that is something that I really want to grow here ... but I am on the "edge" for zones. I don't know what I would need to do for it to be successful because of that. Maybe give it partial shade? In any case that is a flower I am very interested in because it is such a pollinator magnet. Great choice!
@gardenforbirds

I've only tried monarda once and I think I had it in the wrong conditions b/c it didn't do very well - I recently noticed just a bit of it is hanging on by a thread, so am hoping to transplant it somewhere it can display its full glory! It sounds like it's beloved by many a pollinator! (and hummingbirds too I think?)

I'm with you about salvias being a must in my garden. I absolutely adore these tender salvias that I grow as annuals in zone 6, so far only in large pots. This year I hope to plant some directly in the ground to appreciate their full size. Also, why not take some cuttings from your S. madrensis to replace the one you lost?
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds 4 ай бұрын
This year I purchased a few varieties that I have not grown before ... and I even purchased some Coral Nymph salvia seed. (I need to get those either started or planted now though). I have salvia both in the ground and in pots ... they are such a workhorse in my garden! Salvia madrensis was new to me, and I trusted the information on it saying it would be fine. Well, two were but I did lose one. Now I know better and this past winter I covered the base of the plants with 4 - 6 inches of leaves and didn't lose one this winter when we got down to 19 degrees (that temperature is very unusual for us). But if we are going to experience another winter like 2021, I will follow your suggestion and take cuttings! 😊👍 Let me know if you plant some of your salvia directly into the ground and what you think. My mother is in zone 4 and she has such a short growing season, that it is tough to grow a lot of plants in ground and get them to maturity. You definitely have more time though in zone 6!

OK My experience from Atlanta area 7b 8a. We had a brutal winter 22/23. Lost most of my salvia at 8 degrees frozen for 5 days; even if mulched. I am a fan of the Guaranitica group. The nemorosas don't make it thought the heat of summer here. The small leaved ones have not made it either. I didn't mulch my American named s. guaranitica and I had all I could find; and of them only ROCKIN FUCHSIA made it through the winter. AMIGO & PURPLE AND BLOOM came though and spread underground into a small patch. AMISTAD made it where stems got buried in the mulch and rooted during summer. My favorite AMANTE only one made and it was a buried stem, interestingly enough. So from that experience I would give Rockin Fuchsia a solid zone 7 hardiness along with the 2 spreaders. Amistad I would give an 8b and and Amante an 8b. The rest of the PW bunch didn't even make it so I'm going to call them a 9? Bought a bunch more new cultivars (new for me) this year. They say zone 8 but if you like them you better take some cuttings in the house for the winter incase they don't make it.

What a great comment - thank you so much for sharing! We also had a brutal winter event in Dec. 2022. It got down to 17 degrees here with 0 degree windchill. It was below freezing for 4 days in a row. That NEVER happens here along the Texas Gulf Coast in Zone 9a. I was so sad that I lost plants too. Your list of Salvia that made it in your gardens is very helpful! 😊👍

Beautiful garden! Do you grow salvias from seed or do you purchase them locally? I have one variety that I'm trying to overwinter here in my zone 5b area. I think it's called, "Black & Blue". I grew it in a container during the Summer-Fall months and dug them up to overwinter in my garage. So far, so good. They've put out some new growth at the base. I'd like to try some of the varieties you mentioned - very inspirational video. Thanks!

Hi! My absolute favorite nursery is Enchanted Gardens at 6420 FM359, Richmond, TX. It is quite a drive for me, but well worth it because they carry lots of plants (including natives). If you are looking for something in particular ask them, because they will get it from their on-site greenhouse if they have it and it isn't out in the display areas. Sometimes I will call and ask for something in particular (like the Forsythia Sage aka Salvia Madrensis or Giant Milkweed to name a couple) to see if they have it before I drive out there. They also have pretty good prices! 😊🦋🐛💐🌺

I too love salvias. I have several Mystic Blue and 1 Lipstick salvia. I am very disappointed in Amistad though. I really love the look of it and the size, only probably is I’ve had 2 at different times and have killed both! they just never really took off and I could never find any bugs or any clue why they just withered up and died. Might try one more time, 3rd times the charm, right?!

Yikes - I don't know if I could try it again! It sounds like Mystic Blue likes its home in your garden. Our Amistad Salvia is in our raised bed we call our "tree bed". We call it that because we had to have a large maple tree removed on the recommendation of an arborist. They ground the stump down and we created the "tree bed" by bringing in soil and compost. This raised bed has well draining soil in it, unlike the clay soil in our yard. It gets full sun and I keep it regularly watered if it doesn't rain. 😊🐛🦋🌺

We love Mystic Spires Blue Salvia, but I can't get them to reliably recover after winter here in Central Texas (our area is tagged as zone 8b/8a, but has been acting like zone 7a/6b in recent years). Rather than recover from the roots like other Salvia (Nemorosa being one such Salvia), Mystic Spires wants to sprout from the old wood. Usually, I have to cut them down to the ground in winter once they have gone brown. There is usually new growth, but a windy day will cause this new growth to separate from the old wood and die back. As such, I am having to treat Mystic Spires as an (expensive) annual. This is our 4th season with Mystic Spires.
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment. This is the first year I have had Mystic Spires in the garden and it performed very well during our summer of drought and excessive heat. Now I will see how it performs in our winter. I was so bummed because my Salvia Nemorosa died in both our unusually cold December and then the last one died in our excessive heat this summer. And finally I had poor luck with Salvia Guaranitica types this summer. Granted it was an unprecedented summer, but only my very established Salvia Amistad and Amante survived .... and even then one of the Amistad died. It is definitely expensive when you have to replace them and treat them as annuals. Thanks again for sharing your experience in Central Texas.

After noticing that, I'm afraid of planting them in my garden bc I don't want to introduce these pests (whatever they are) to my garden. I really want these plants. Do you know what I can to get rid of whatever is causing the leaf holes bf planting? I really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Yours is a good question. Salvia usually don't have pests, but aphids, spider mites, or white flies can attack a salvia. I would contact the local grower you bought it from if you can and ask about the damage you are seeing. I wouldn't want to plant them either in my garden before I got rid of what was attacking your newly purchased plants. I don't use pesticides, so I really don't have a recommendation for that.
