Took my children there at Easter. my 8 year old son was quite disappointed when he found the pacers weren't running lol. I usually take my children there about once a year. Along with other local railway sites like Ecclesborne and Barrowhill Roundhouse etc. I would like to say i've had a number of old second hand models, from the model railway there at the start of your video and they are all well looked after and good runners. Also I would like to add on what you touched on at the end, it often isn't that busy and the volunteers down there try hard, Im thankful to you for producing this video as I would like to see this place not only survive but prosper. By the way it is also dog friendly

What a nice place, I could spend *days* measuring rivets in such a collection of so various stuff ;) Nice to see some modern(ish) machines preserved too. And the little narrow gauge steam engine sounds really well balanced. And yes model railroads were a thing back in the late XIXth. If you didn't know, Napoleon III, last Emperor of the French, was a real train nerd. Of course he could build real railways (and he did, he more than quadrupled the size of the national network...), but he also built and owned a live steam model railroad of a scale similar of the ancien Rocket model you've just seen. One loco is preserved at the Compiègne palace. Model railroading is nearly as old as full scale thing!

Hi Sam, I went to Butterly back in 2001 and met the owner of Princess Margaret Rose. He also sold me a copy of his book about the loco. He very kindly sign the copy. Also the Duchess of Sutherland was under going restoration at the time and 6201 Princess Elizabeth was the Loco on duty pulling the trains. My Beagle Puppy who was about 6 months old enjoyed his first Train ride.

Oh, I've not been to the Midland railway for decades but I grew up round there - my family on my Mum's side are from around there! My mum went to school in Swanick. My Dad's mum is buried very near there too, because it was the geographic middle of distributed family despite her living in the South-East most of her life having moved down from Leicestershire after the war. I'm in Shipley, West Yorkshire now. A triangular station whilst Ambergate's is long gone! Plenty of heritage railways and interesting things to see around here too!

Hi Sam, glad to see that Chloe and you had a great day out on the Midland Railway Butterley. Back in the good old 1980's when we were all young, I travelled around the Midlands and occasionally up to Sheffield by train. At the time a lot of the journeys were on first generation DMU's. (Don't remember exactly which class 😞) They weren't the newest, fastest or quietest but being able to sit on the first row in the driving coach and peer past the driver to get the view of the track out of the front window was amazing...

Great video Sam - it's been a good 15 years since I was last there. Back in the 80s, I remember being on a Santa Special and my dad kept teasing me because I didn't believe in Santa any more, and lo and behold - their Santa forgot to do our coach, so my dad said it was my fault for not believing! Just on a historical note - neither of the stations are original. Butterley was demolished by BR, and the buildings there now came from Whitwell, whilst Swanwick Junction is an entirely new build station (as in, there was no station there previously), with the buildings coming from Syston.

Lovely! The sheer number of heritage railways in the UK is just mind boggling. Google did reveal a number of no less than 150... We can only presume that mass closures in the very past have contributed triggering so many initiatives for the public to experience days gone by... What a sweet day out 🙂

Narrow gauge tracks are next to standard gauge ones at Blaenau Ffestiniog, so not that unusual. Open coaches are available on the Launceston Steam Railway and the ride is similar. Open Sundays to Thursdays at the moment should you chose to come to Cornwall.

Also you should have called it a Samcastle, I do need to go to see the HSTs the peaks and the steamers, and they have Duchess of Sutherland there atm having some work. If you want to see narrow gauge next to standard, Bleanau Ffestiniog is brilliant, you have the mainline with occasional railtours and then the Ffestiniog

I know Midland Railway well I used to go a lot as a child with my mum's train mad Uncle in the 1980s. Unfortunately not so long ago some vandals got into the site and then smashed out coach windows along with damage to the station buildings but the most cruel part was memorial benches were smashed in half these were for people who either have given money to the railway or at some point volunteered their time to help out. This is the second time this has happened the second attack was in the ' Derbyshire Times ' early this year the other first attack was in 2022. Hopefully this video will encourage people to visit otherwise it will close.

One of my local presrved railways was called the Midland Railway too, but it has less stuff than the one in Butterley. In fact, It hasn't run an excursion between 2019 and November 2022, and still hasn't run one in 2023 after legal troubles over the depot and being sold to new owners. It too had a sand pit, but only during the Thomas events and it wasn't trying to be a beach. I believe that coach at 1:43 is home to some of the model used on TUGS and Thomas and Friends. They're no longer open on a regular basis but have special weekends where they are. 2:10 that class 141 pacer was a 1st generation Pacer, one of only 20 ever built. They were retired in the late 90s and most ended up in Iran. 7:42 that used to have a Thomas face on it and was called Oswald.

Did think the Princess Royal reveal was going to be another model so a nice surprise to see the real thing, I have been on the footplate myself as this particular class is one of my favourite steam locos Again a shame that there is so much ex-rolling stock in poor condition but on the upside at least we can see them in preservation Thanks for sharing

This is aboutn 20 minutes away from me. Its a shame its not what it was as I was growing up. Oswald in a bad way, the shop gone (That used to be next to Oswald). I do think licensing for DOWT was kinda the start as many places couldn't afford the prices Mattel wanted. And then covid and cost of living haven't helped. That lake was always my favourite part. I do think the line is a little too short Imo. Swanwick Station was actually built a few years ago before the licensing issues got bad.

Thank you so much for doing this video, especially this year of all years as it is exactly 10 years ago that me and my family left the railway. We used to have stuff in the road transport shed, but it wasn't feasible to keep it there anymore for many reasons (including the fact we live in Lincolnshire). I had been told recently that the railway hadn't changed much, and that shows in your video. It was so great to see that Oswald (the blue saddle tank) was still there (even though he's looking a little worse for wear). They used to have someone watching a camera and speaking into a microphone which came out on speakers hidden around Oswald (back when there was a shop there instead of picnic benches and Oswald had a face). And so happy to see the model railway at Swanick have got their main railway back (after it was a casualty in a fire some years ago before we left). There was even a familiar face in the form of the guard on the narrow gauge railway (they used to let me come for rides as a kid, so I sat with the guard, which often ended up being the guy you had on your trip). A bit of extra history for you, at the end of the narrow gauge line at the bottom of the valley (hidden by bushes and suchlike), there is a tunnel mouth. That is the entrance to the Butterley canal tunnel (the main canal route through that area in its day). The tunnel unfortunately became impossible to maintain and was abandoned, it has been explored a couple of times with the last person getting right up to where the tunnel has now collapsed. The tunnel was such a major connection in its time that there was actually a small wharf inside the tunnel, which is possibly still there, but it is now probably too dangerous to try going down there to find out. Thank you so much Sam and Chloe for taking me down memory lane.
