Sam Esmail is a director, screenwriter, and producer, best known for his multiple award-winning USA series Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek. In 2015, Mr. Robot premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin and won the “Audience Award for the Best Episodic.” In 2016, the show received a Golden Globe for “Best Television Series-Drama,” A Peabody Award, a Critics Choice Television Award for “Best Drama Series,” the Television Critics Association Award for “Outstanding New Program,” and a Writers Guild of America Award for “Television: New Series.” The fourth season of “Mr. Robot” concluded the series in 2019.
Following Mr. Robot, Esmail directed and executive produced the first season of an adaptation of the Gimlet media podcast, Homecoming, starring Julia Roberts, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and aired on Amazon Prime Video. Last year, Esmail executive produced the political thriller Gaslit starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. The series launched on Starz and is a modern take on the 1970s political Watergate scandal centering on untold stories and forgotten characters of the time. The show earned four Critics Choice nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. Esmail also executive produced Angelyne, a limited series based on The Hollywood Reporter investigative feature about the life of Los Angeles’ mysterious billboard icon. The 5-episode limited series is available on Peacock. Other projects under his production company, Esmail Corp, and overall deal with Universal Content Productions include; Briarpatch (2019), The Resort (2022), The Family Chao, and Battlestar Galactica.
After graduating from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Esmail attended AFI’s directing program where he received his MFA. In 2008, he wrote his first feature screenplay Sequels, Remakes & Adaptions, which landed on the Black List, a survey taken by more than 600 production companies and film financier executives about their most liked screenplays. He followed that up a year later with his second Black List script, Norm the Movie. His feature directorial debut, Comet, which he also wrote, was released through IFC in 2015 and starred Emmy Rossum and Justin Long.

Anything Sam Esmail touches is gold. Mr. Robot changed how I saw writing, directing, cinematography, etc. And just, dude is a genius.

I definitely believe this is message to the youth in America and the unwillingness to detach from their phones and distraction and engage with the emotional, personal and broader problems seen in the country and broader society .

Sam esmail makes me feel for these messed-up people, even when they're doing messed-up things. he ain't just a director, he's a storyteller, and his stories? They stay with you, long after you finish watching. That's why he's one of my all-time favorite directors❤

You feel sorry for them because in a weird way we relate to these characters because we’ve been these characters at one point in our lives

This movie resonates with the audience because it’s easier for them to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism-not the best outcome for making a film. Well made though huh!

Aside from the interesting shots and acting, this shitty movie is the pure definition of the words "gratuitous" and "arbitrary". 2h20 for nothing, pure emptiness.

you can stuff your predictive programming. We all know what’s coming and many of us will blame you.

@@debrachambers1304 I'd like to know this too. I mean, there's a lot of blame to go around, so where's the finger pointing in this particular instance? I also don't understand why people get mad at predictive shows or movies. Like do people get mad at Black Mirror too? If you already know what's coming, and you're ready for it, are you mad that everyone else is getting a warning too? Or do you think they're getting people used to it? But why would they get people used to it, when the story is about how "they're" gonna screw the common man? Why would "they" care if you're used to it when they're already screwing us? Why would they give away their edge? Art is a way to process, ponder and hold up a mirror to the world we live in. We're gonna tell stories that reflect our reality. So I guess I don't understand why anything that could possibly predict the future is a bad thing. It just means people are paying attention.

A ruse? It builds up something gradually and doesn't suddenly have a twist at the ending or anything.

Like what did u expect at the end? For them to save the world from the "bad guys"? They aren't superheroes. They're regular ppl, it makes perfect sense to leave them confused. The makes the deeper message of the film all the more clear.
