good vid Sam. When I was a young fella like you I worked on a prawn trawler in the N.W. of Western Australia. We worked out of a place called Sam's Creek (yeah) and it had a big tide range. We were hung up there for weeks while the skipper and the owner wrangled over repairs. Every low tide we were over on our bilge. During the day that was o.k. we'd go visiting, but if it was night time we had to sleep part on the bunk and part on the hull. Tiresome. It went on for weeks. Cheers.

Nice hull. People have forgotten that a full keel and rudder protected prop is the best configuration for a cruising boat. Fin keels, spade rudders, sail drives, folding props, etc, are all headaches.

Sam. I know I’m way behind the curve (about 10 months behind) but just a day or two ago discovered your videos. I’ve enjoyed your adventures. The first video I saw you were in NC. That caught my attention since I live in NC.Also you happened to install a Electric motor on your boat very smartly and on your own. You have done a lot of little improvements to the boat yourself with basic tools using whatever you can find. Not necessarily masterfully but efficiently and cheaply. Which is what I have had to do all my life so I totally understand and admire. And who doesn’t love a sailboat with Quiet power provided by the wind! I hope you can continue your journey!

Great video! But I can't believe you traveled across an ocean and got within walking distance of Mont St Michel, and you didn't actually visit it and go inside! I loved it so much I've been twice, myself. St. Malo is great, though. My brother and I were visiting Le Grand Be when suddenly my brother said, "There's no more land left!" I was like, what are you talking about!? And he said "THERE'S NO MORE LAND LEFT!" and pointed to the tide rushing in! So we ran to what was now a shore, and we quickly took our shoes and socks off and hiked our pants legs up and ran through the rising water to get back to the mainland. Good times.

Great Video Sam. Glad you didn't take the first strategy to beach Pickled Herring. I know someone who did the same in his boat on a spring tide and was beached for weeks before he refloated again!!! Good luck with the Biscayne and watch for those pesky Orcas, been at it again I hear.

I was in saint malo end of this September for 5 days. Absolutely beautiful. The beaches Harbor and town. History everywhere you look. I also did a day trip to mont Saint Michael. Arrived when the tide was out. Incredible to wonder how the abby was built arond 1000 AD. The Sanchez ice cream you had in Saint malo is legendary as are the sweet rolls. I stayed within the odd town walls on rue chateaubriand. Great following you Sam.

Sam, you are the awsomest sailor man ever. I can't imagine careening my boat like that, and you do it nonchalantly AND single handed. You are a true Joshua Slocum of your time, only I hope you make it home on your last voyage.

Nice video. Suggestions from Fundy. Wait til 1/2hr or so ebb tide. Then power the boat straight in til it grounds.This minimizes "pounding" time while waiting to hard ground. Or,you can turn boat parallel to beach at last moment,& lay her down with deck listed toward shore.This will diminish pounding during rising tide,but you must drop anchor,(on the way in) to keep boat from being driven up the beach as it re-floats. You need water & a long & short handled coarse (fishboat)scrub brushes for bottom cleaning.When the tide drops to about 1ft or less depth,jump over with buckets & brushes.Dip brush in tide as long as you can & use filled buckets for rinse. Do maintenance,zincs,bottom paint-after tide leaves. Cheers/Len

Well done Sam. Drying out is less stressful in sheltered waters, without the bumping. I dry out regularly with my gaff rigged boat. It doesn't lean as much as yours though!

I visited mont st michel in the 1980’s , an other worldly place to visit and let imagination go wild. Love your approach to sailing. You make it seem really accessible. I see the new Apple immersive goggles are getting some press. Can you imagine the videos you can shoot and we can feel like we are right there, life size. Life’s gonna get crazy for your kind of content.

Wow I didn't know that boat of yours was that small! BUT it has a full keel with integrated rudder and with a very protected prop. What a rugged little boat but its all you need.

If you are going toward Gibraltar, be careful. There are Orcas sinking small sailboats there. They learned how to do it.

Le mont Saint Michel is a little town and monastery. Not a “castle”. Next time I would really recommend going right up to it and going inside.

I've seen this done even with cats. But , with a monphull with a large keel its absolutely amazing how much work you can do ! I've seen bottom paint done and everything. Definitely a great way to save money !

The Bay of Biscay Can be Really Bad Sam. If you’re not stuck for time, following the Coast down keeping well away from the edge of the Continental Shelf just Offshore, down France, across Northern Spain then down the coast of Portugal is a really nice journey, with lots of places to dive into to shelter and wait for the weather window for the next leg. Just noticed the propeller nuts are installed backwards I think it is smaller but first then the larger. So next time when your out of the water .

The danger in what you did is that there could be a rock that the hull comes to rest on and that could seriously damage the hull. You should aways survey the careening spot on the previous low tide and place a marker buoy so that you can be sure of a safe grounding.

If you took a bit left of the castle, you will be able to get a boat closer. ❤ There are arial photos showing more depth in that location. Thank you for this great, inspiring video. I want to start travelling again

Hey, you been in my hometown... @16:11 what you see in the rocks is actually a carved road to the ancient harbor which is now under the sea, active until, like, the roman period... the tower up to it is the most ancient (1345) building of the whole town, built upon a previous viking fortification by bretons to control the new rebellious Saint-Malo city (with wasn't enclosed by then) on the other side of the bay you parked your boat in (the actual oldest remain is the "murus gallicus" near the crippled nazi turrets you've filmed).

Haha, here in The Netherlands we do this too but usually with our traditional flat-bottomed ships without a keel. Sure sleeps a lot more comfortable 🤣 Must be a cool experience

If you ever run aground on a sandy flat, save yourself embarrassment when tide goes out, get your brush out and swear blind you put her there to careen and clean off the barnacles. That's what I do anyway.

there are a few company's that makes outriggers for small boats so they can standing upright when the tide goes out, they plug into the side in little sockets aluminum poles with feet. If you're home port had a tide put the stilts down and go ashore

The trip up the R Rance would have been really interesting and Dinan which is as far you can go, very pretty. Turn around now, quickly, its is worth it. Don't worry about the lock. Let the fishing boats and any motorboats in first and then follow. They can get under the road bridge, but yachts need to wait until the lock keeper opens the road bridge. There was things to hold onto the side of the lock but we stayed under power in the middle. Wasn't a problem

The pickled herring is now dried herring. Seriously there is lots to consider with the fuel and water and grey tanks.and every thing rolling over but I am surprised why it is not done more in places where tides permit it.

Its always nice to have spare tank or bladder on board, fill it up with seawater at first contact and you'll bring her down easy;)

No getting away from it, a 4ft Draft Really Rocks, and as a Cruiser, the Maximum Draft I’ll consider having on a Sailboat, is 5ft (the Draft on my next Sailboat, as I can’t fit what I need on the smaller one that has 4ft Draft. That extra Foot of Draft isn’t a horrifically Bad issue with the number of places it rules out being able to visit thankfully, as that is the Draft when fully laden with Water, Fuel, Provisions, and everyone onboard- that I can live with. 👍Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Sam you are a braver man than me beaching your boat like that. I would always be too worried incase i ended up on top of a wreck or a WWII unexploded mine or bomb 😮😮 Then if that was ok i would worry that the wet mud and sand would act like a suction cup on the hull so when the tide rose it filled the boat instead of floating lol I would be a bag of nerves the whole time 😊
