One of my most concrete memories is when my grandparents lived in a caravan about 2 hours from me, and on a weekend my granddad (who worked round me still) would drive back home to caravan, so I’d go with him, and on those long drives, we would have this on repeat, one of the things me and him bonded with was loving this and how it was the first time we both tapped and sang together, sometimes it takes stuff like a song to realise that when someone’s gone, you will miss them more than anything, I’m so not ready to lose my granddad for memories like this

I don't know when and how it started, but I've loved this song from hearing it on the radio as a little girl growing up in Jamaica. I loved it so much I sang it to my son as a lullaby when he was a baby, then to my daughter, and now, now I'm singing it to my grandson as I did to his father. He knows all the words, though I had them in the wrong places so I'm here learning the lyrics once and for all...what a singer and a beautiful performance this is!! I met him when I was a kid visiting Atlantic City with my Aunt and Uncle around 1980. The grownups were gambling and I was tired of game room and stepped outside to sneak a smoke. He got out of his car and I started singing Candy Man. He says "You're a cool cat" finger guns and all. He tells me how I shouldn't smoke and then asked what I was doing. I say I got board and was gonna walk to our hotel. He offers a ride and I say sure. I was cheesing big time. He was already one of my heroes and it was my first ride in a limo. I was 15 and it was wonderful. When I got much older I read that he hated Candy Man and yet he was ever so gracious. My first brush with fame. Oh yeah, I did not ask him if he was keeping an eye out for me but I wanted to. Gosh, I miss his presence.

When we see the dearth shortage of happy go lucky pop songs like this, that are still popular half a century after release, it shows how much is owed to the writers of this song. Both Anthony Newley and Leslie Briccuse were both prolific UK writers of musicals and middle of the road hit songs since the 1950s. Sammy Davis provided the talent to make them timeless hits for new generations
